To think you shouldn’t be able to finance a Domino’s?

I’ve also seen the same company advertising finance for Asda pizzas, literally.

AIBU to think this sets a terrible precedent? I can easily see students etc quickly racking up the debt from the service. Rather than learning how to cook cheaply from scratch some will just use this.

Finance of course does have its place for many things such as cars and appliances. But for a fucking pizza? I can just about accept maybe financing for a Domino’s (for example your child’s birthday falls just before payday and they want pizza with their friends and you’re skint but don’t want them to miss out) but I find the option to finance a pizza from Asda especially tragic.

And no, it’s not me being a snob. I’m completely skint. That’s why it bothers me because I think people will end up racking up the debt quickly with it.

Totally agree. I see a lot of teenagers on tiktok making jokes about receiving letters from the likes of klarna and other credit companies chasing missing payments for clothes they’ve bought. I think the easy access and temptation at every checkout now to finance almost anything, along with lack of financial education in schools and at home, is setting a lot of young people up for huge financial issues when they get older.

I looked at the comments on one of the videos and someone had mentioned that not paying would bugger their credit score and there were loads of responses from people asking what a credit score is and that they’d never heard of it, it’s concerning.

From Google - cost of a television in 1970:

1970 Bush CTV184S 22" screen £289 19s (in today's money= £3300)

How many people nowadays would be able to afford a TV outright if they still cost that much?

saleorbouy · 05/11/2021 13:11

If you have a cash flow issue so severe that you need to finance a Domino's pizza then you should really be taking a trek to the supermarket and buying one there. You could get at least a handful of pizzas for the same price as one Domino's.
Then again some people have no idea about maximising value but are happy to moan when they end up in self inflicted financial strife.

mumjustmum · 05/11/2021 13:13

This is AWFUL!
Good lord, I'm terrible for takeaways NOW and I'm 36 and can afford them. I'd have spent my whole student loan on this at 18.
What the hell are they thinking!?!?!? Awful.

Domino's a luxury? confused Expensive indulgence - yes. But very far away from luxury.

Cambridge dictionary definition of luxury: great comfort, especially as provided by expensive and beautiful things; something expensive that is pleasant to have but is not necessary; something that gives you a lot of pleasure but cannot be done often

Yes - what is a luxury if it's not an 'expensive indulgence'? Confused

Dominoes is luxury! It's one of the most expensive pizza places to order from!

I don’t even mind Klarna so much. At least you’re keeping the clothes. But a fucking Domino’s? It’ll be gone the next day.

As I said before the only context in which I think it could be useful is if you’re throwing a pizza party for your kid’s birthday and it falls just before payday so you use it so that your child doesn’t miss out.

I use Klana and PayPal credit but I use it as a try on service instead of having to have money out of my account I use Klana receive it try it on pay the rest of what I've kept if its more than my 1st payment and report returns on the rest. Occasionally if something large comes up I might take advantage of interest free credit.
But for a pizza ... wow.

Yes, exactly. Even by delivery pizza standards (let alone supermarket ones) it's about three times the cost of an 'unbranded' takeaway pizza.

jetadore · 05/11/2021 17:09

Haven’t read the whole thread, has anyone said “I can make pizza from scratch for 15p and it tastes 1,000,000x better than Domino’s” yet?

nordica · 05/11/2021 17:20

These buy now, pay later services are terrible for people who genuinely struggle with overspending. I know someone who ended up in lots and lots of debt due to their mental illness (manic depressive prone to excessive shopping sprees) and it took years to finally clear it. And that was before it was this easy to spend money you don't have. If you can't afford it now, then using these services is just moving the problem forward to next month and the month after.

@MaskingForIt

YABU. If people want pizza they should be able to have it. People need food to survive and they deserve a treat now and then.
On credit! don't be stupid
JCFJW · 05/11/2021 17:45

It really is tragic.

I’m waiting for the day it’s the norm to get your weekly grocery shop on finance

Personally I have never made a home-made pizza that's as good as a restaurant/delivery one. I think you need one of those dedicated super-hot pizza ovens - if you had one, you probably could, but you could get dozens of Dominos for the cost of buying and installing it.

Almost Grin son makes his own. Probably about £1.50 a pop including electricity. They really are fantastic. Seriously considering advising him to throw in the studies and buy a van and a pizza oven!

But that’s just a credit card I guess.
