Heating disagreement

Help me out!

Our heating themostat was set to 19c. I asked Mr Bin to turn it up to 21c now it's a bit colder. He said it won't make it any warmer in the house, because the heating/radiators only gets so hot.

I think he's wrong, that the heating will stay on for longer, until the place has warmed up to the temp we set on the thermostat before cutting out. So it will make the house warmer to set the thermostat higher.

Am I going crazy?

YABU- he is correct.

YANBU- I am correct and he is a big weirdo.

YANBU

Mol1628 · 04/11/2021 17:12

Of course he’s wrong otherwise thermostats wouldn’t exist and heating would just be a on off switch.

Wannakisstheteacher · 04/11/2021 17:13

😂 ask him if he’s had a bump to the head

Pumpkinsonparade · 04/11/2021 17:13

Does he like spending money??

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 04/11/2021 17:14

Yanbu but l can't say he is a big weirdo based solely on above Wink

gingerbin · 04/11/2021 17:15

He likes spending my money on things he likes... not so great about boring household bills.

OP posts:
emmathedilemma · 04/11/2021 17:17

what does he think the thermostat is for??
Although I think you're both being a bit unreasonable, it should always be set to an even number!

riotlady · 04/11/2021 17:18

YANBU… obviously, that’s how thermostats work!

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 04/11/2021 17:18

Did you ask him what was magical about 19degrees? What is it about central heating that only works up to that temperature?

You aren't going crazy. You have fully understood the thermo-complexities of home heating.

He's been a twonk!

Chloemol · 04/11/2021 17:22

Yanbu

mrsbyers · 04/11/2021 17:23

Yabu to ask him - go and turn it up !

CushionMountain · 04/11/2021 17:24

Why do you need to turn it up because it's got colder outside though? Surely if 19 is a comfortable temperature, the only difference that the temperature outside makes is that the heating has to be on longer to achieve 19 degrees. The function of the thermostat is to maintain the set temperature.

pussycatlickinglollyices · 04/11/2021 17:25

I asked Mr Bin to turn it up to 21c

Rookie error. You asked.
Either do it yourself or tell him to.

His magic thermostatic radiator valves won't be that befuddled by a higher temperature. Grin

ShowOfHands · 04/11/2021 17:25

Does he ever wash up and add hot water? Or add hot water to a tepid bath? Ask him why he does those things?

Although, I don't know about different settings for different seasons. If you're comfortable and warm at 19 degrees in September, why not in February?

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 04/11/2021 17:26

The New Scientist ran a piece on that @CushionMountain. Some interesting possibilities

Horst · 04/11/2021 17:28

I mean his wrong but I’m guessing he just didn’t want to say no to you. 19c seems fine maybe 20c tops.

Bagelsandbrie · 04/11/2021 17:28

He is an idiot Grin

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 04/11/2021 17:31

Men’s bodies runner warmer than women’s on the whole. So they are not cold as easily / feel warm at a lower temperature. This is why women often feel that their offices are freezing. Obviously not 100% of the time but often - comes up in the Invisible Women studies I think.

Households have had heating wars for years, but it always seems to be the man who wants it turned off, with the result that women are often cold. It’s not right that you should feel cold just because a man doesn’t thjnk it’s necessary to be warmed!

Horst · 04/11/2021 17:34

My fil turns the temperature right up when mils out the house or away on a ladies weekend. You always know if she’s gone out because the heat hits you like opening an oven door Grin

CushionMountain · 04/11/2021 17:34

I'll have a read of that later @HoardingSamphireSaurus, thanks.
Me and Dh have had many discussions along these lines over the summer. How is it that if the temperature is 18 inside, I'd want to put another layer on, but 18 outside feels warm and I'd go out in a t shirt.

gingerbin · 04/11/2021 17:36

I asked him, because he was up and passing the thermostat. :)

And, despite jumper, socks, slippers and blanket, I am cold, which is why I asked him to turn it up!

OP posts:
Spiceup · 04/11/2021 17:37

In the coldest weather my heating can't get the rooms above 19 degrees no matter where the thermostat is set, so he might not be wrong.

bigburdd · 04/11/2021 17:44

YABU it needs to be either 18, 20 or 22! Can't stand an odd number Smile

EatSleepRantRepeat · 04/11/2021 17:54

I've been trying to persuade DH to have the heating on during the day at the moment, the house is 16-17 degrees without it but feels very cold in a jumper and blanket.

It's hard to argue though because our energy supplier went bust, our new tariff is really expensive in comparison and WFH means we're home so much more. Our employers are making huge savings on office space while we're all paying over the odds for power and heat Hmm

onceandneveragain · 04/11/2021 18:04

Um I think you're both sort of right. In your specific case, yes obviously the longer the heating is on for the warmer the house will gradually both get, and stay.

But there was a poster on a previous thread who said that her (old, badly insulated) house never got above 21degrees no matter how long the heating was on for. She said she'd set the thermostat to 35 but the temperature of the room several hours later was still only 18. In that case (which seems similar to your husband's thinking) I thought it seemed a bit pointless as it's never going to reach 35 degrees whether the thermostat is set to 22 or 35. Similarly my sister when she comes into a cold house puts the thermostat straight up to the highest setting, and won't accept it won't warm up any faster from 16 degrees whether its set to 22 or 28!

So you are technically right but I see your DH 's thinking that there are some houses/conditions where the temp you set the thermostat to is irrelevant to what temperature you will actually get.
