To ask how drivers of massive SUVs square it with themselves in terms of climate change?

Same goes for those who go long haul on the regular? Buy loads of cheap, disposable fashion? Etc etc? Do you just not worry about climate change?

I know I sound sanctimonious but I am genuinely baffled by people driving massive diesel SUVs like there isn't a major issue.

@samwitwicky

I think that until big corporations / governments etc start to make real visible changes, generally people won't consider the environment
This

There is a report (2017) that 100 companies are responsible for 70% of the world's emissions
www.theguardian.com/sustainable-business/2017/jul/10/100-fossil-fuel-companies-investors-responsible-71-global-emissions-cdp-study-climate-change

The report found that more than half of global industrial emissions since 1988 – the year the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was established – can be traced to just 25 corporate and state-owned entities.
There is a “growing wave of companies that are acting in the opposite manner to the companies in this report,” says Brune. Nearly 100 companies including Apple, Facebook, Google and Ikea have committed to 100% renewable power under theRE100 initiative.Volvo recently announcedthat all its cars would be electric or hybrid from 2019
@Newgirls I thought bananas still came in by boat? They travel well as opposed to baby sweet corn, avocado, asparagus etc.

I don’t own a big SUV, I’d like one though because I live at the arse end of nowhere and wouldn’t trust an EV as far as I could throw one.

I re-use bloody everything and today am wearing a natural fibre dress I bought secondhand on eBay years ago - and most days I fill a bag with litter from the beach.

But spend the night on a wind-blown moor? No ta.
Yes that’s right on shipping containers. It’s the volume of them, how they are grown and how many the UK waste that make them more ‘un-eco’ than say avos. We import so much food it’s a bit crazy to pick on one. Chocolate for eg isn’t great either!

ForPingsSake · 04/11/2021 18:27

We have a petrol SUV crossover, I'm fairly sure it's less polluting than some older cars that are not SUVs. Our other car is an EV which we use when we can, we have only flown somewhere once for a holiday in the last 20 yrs and 3 or 4 times to visit family (who no longer live abroad so we won't do that anymore). I'm also a vegetarian. I don't feel overly happy about driving the petrol car but an EV that would meet our needs, in the same way, would be prohibitively expensive now. Give it a few years and we may well swap that for an EV too.

As much as we can make changes as individuals, that will not be what saves this planet. Changes need to be made by governments, not by individuals or we're all just pissing in the wind.

MsTSwift · 04/11/2021 18:28

There’s a poster on here with nine children 🙄. Puts the odd suv into the shade.

MsTSwift · 04/11/2021 18:30

It’s daft moaning about “big companies”. They only exist and pollute because we buy their shit! They don’t exist in a vacuum!

I don’t believe climate change is a real issue. I mean, yes the earth is warming, but I don’t think it’s something we need to panic about.

I don’t have a car because I don’t need one, but I defend other people’s right to have them if they can afford it.

I would like to see more electric vehicles on the road though—I think only about local air quality, I don’t give a shit about carbon emissions. Less air and noise pollution—what’s not to like? (Ok, they won’t get you long distances but most trips don’t involve long distances anyway)

Franklyfrost · 04/11/2021 18:32

I always wonder how huge suv drivers cope with being so conspicuous while also so bad at judging distance. If someone’s in a small car and can’t pass on a narrow road I assume they’re a nervous driver. When it’s someone in a massive car I assume they’re a tit.

Newgirls · 04/11/2021 18:33

We need to work on ALL this stuff

Have fewer kids.
Walk/cycle more
Buy less (it’s us buying from those 25 companies!)
Eat more UK food ideally not animals
Etc etc

That plane won’t go if people don’t buy the seats. The factory won’t emit carbon if we don’t buy the top. It’s all this stuff isn’t it

Elephantsparade · 04/11/2021 18:36

I always wonder why they want to take up so much room on the roads.

Wh6 haven’t you questioned meat eaters, or whu recycling can’t be better, or best yet why people have so many children, when that’s not good for the environment

Why pick on just one group?

Crap drivers in "driving different cars" shocker. Why wouldn't the small car driver be "a tit" as you so charmingly put it? Just because of your dislike of a particular type of car?
anon12345678901 · 04/11/2021 18:38

I got mine because I wanted too. It's as simple as that. I often take my sons friends with us or my nephews so I wanted a larger car with a great safety rating.
Judge me all you want but I'll judge those who have 3 or more children. I mean, you aren't thinking of the environment if you're popping them out are you?

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 04/11/2021 18:39

Op isn't coming back, nor any of the other goady posters sneering at SUVs, they don't do debate.

Yes I said this earlier. In carparks it is always women in suvs holding everyone up whilst they try painfully to manoeuvre their car making an utter hash of it. I am generalising and yes it sounds sexist but sadly it is what I observe on a daily basis.
Newgirls · 04/11/2021 18:42

There is a thread about vegan food and meat eating at the moment too so it’s not just car owners being debated.

It’s good that COP has triggered these discussions.

SecretSpAD · 04/11/2021 18:44

I drive a crossover SUV and it's diesel. My husband also drives one. Our adopted son has just bought an ancient Ford Fiesta as his first car that probably spews more shit into the environment than both of ours.

I love, my car and love being higher than in a normal car - mostly because I'm short and being bigger means I can see over the hedges here in Cornwall.

We inherited our children when their mother died so didn't contribute our own consumers to the world. We rarely fly anywhere anymore after years of global travel for work and fun.

My fathers estate has been run as sustainably as possible for decades now - as are many businesses in this county.

We aren't massively into designer stuff, mostly as we don't live in London anymore so no need to look trendy.

I'm very much of the opinion that I do my bit but I'm not busting a gut to change my life. Sorry. The bottom line is I don't care enough.

jackstini · 04/11/2021 18:46

We have an SUV but it's a hybrid and we cut down from 2 cars to 1 - so when there's all of us plus luggage for UK holidays, we need the space

Now I am wfh most of our journeys are within the electrical miles

We sometimes go long haul, but not often and do other things to help combat climate change but always aware I could do more (as probably could we all..?!)

@fallfallfall

I never thought that someone would judge based on our vehicle. Interesting concept. It’s a small diesel truck. It’s our only family vehicle, it’s a work truck with a special bed for our bee keeping business. I’m in rural Canada, although I presume some might temporarily get by without driving over here, with the lay of our land it would be very impractical and possibly unhealthy on other levels.
It's a British thing. We like to have something to feel smug and superior about.
KayKayWat · 04/11/2021 18:56

Nobody would be able to drive a big SUV if they hadn't been born in the first place. 🤷‍♀️

Heartdogs · 04/11/2021 18:57

It's takes a special type of oblivious obnoxious person to drive a big SUV. It's not just the environment damage which is the big thing. In a high speed crash with another car the likelihood is that they will be grand and the passengers of the other car will be crushed. They take up more than a normal sized parking space so you can't use the spaces either side of them.. You can't see past them at junctions. They are bad for the environment, make the roads more dangerous and should not be legal.
