Same goes for those who go long haul on the regular? Buy loads of cheap, disposable fashion? Etc etc? Do you just not worry about climate change?

I know I sound sanctimonious but I am genuinely baffled by people driving massive diesel SUVs like there isn't a major issue.

I don’t have a massive SUV but I do have a little one. I actually mainly got it because I wanted a car big enough for regular family camping trips that was still not a fuel guzzler. It’s pretty fuel efficient 50-60mpg depending on whether it’s long or short journeys etc. Which is actually more eco friendly than the 25 year old Ford I had before it. I don’t view it as a status symbol. It is not brand new because I can’t afford brand new. It’s just a family car that does what I need it to do. We don’t really buy new clothes they tend to be second hand unless underwear. We have low water usage, low energy usage, don’t fly abroad etc all our families holidays are camping trips and have been for years before covid.

@LongBeanTime
I have two horses but they find the M1 a little spooky

Nat6999 · 05/11/2021 20:27

When we have COP26 & nearly every world leader is arriving in a private jet, several countries have sent military protection planes as well & our PM is jetting backwards & forwards between London, Glasgow & Edinburgh & people are moaning about SUV's. When our world leaders start doing their bit we will think about doing ours.

Really? How many people in your household that you need 3 cars?!

antsinyourpanta · 05/11/2021 20:47

Since the average MNer eats only two bites of a radish daily to stay within her calories, this is not such an issue here.

🤣🤣🤣

Unhomme · 05/11/2021 20:50

I dont give a shit, especially as the horsebox is hard to pull behind a bicycle...

linsey2581 · 05/11/2021 20:53

I drive a large SUV but it’s not diesel it’s a hybrid, 1/2 petrol 1/2 electric.

MyCatTibby · 05/11/2021 21:01

How far do we go before we suck every joy out of life? The real issue is over population and that’s probably irreversible by now.

Bladerunners · 05/11/2021 21:01

It’s probably the people with budget range Range Rover evoques who are getting all shirty on this thread. Those who properly need a 4X4- don’t justify yourselves to the Nissan Leaf crowd.

Spaceshiphaslanded · 05/11/2021 21:10

I’m one. This week with cop26 on, I curiously looked into co2 of eating meat and cheese etc as I’m veggie 100% and do a few days a week vegan. Media had me convinced this was the best way to reduce my footprint.
Then I compared this to my diesel SUV. My god.....cheese is a drop in ocean vs the school run!!!

So OP - I think it’s ignorance rather than selfishness. We need more media focus on what actually will make a difference. Time for my house to get on their bikes.

KayKayWat · 05/11/2021 21:13

Love my two pickups tbf.

CrankyFrankie · 05/11/2021 21:13

There is NO justification for driving massive gas guzzlers. None! On myriad levels. American wannabes.

Also no justification these days for not educating yourself on climate change. Info readily available from NASA, New Scientist, Scientific American... it’s really not hard to find trusted sources.

peaceanddove · 05/11/2021 21:14

@Xenia

I find it a lot easier just to live without any guilt on these issues. I am very lucky and content.
Yep x

Meh. The planet will fix itself once we're gone.
peaceanddove · 05/11/2021 21:24

It baffles me how people assume we have a God given right to still be here in 10,000 years time. We don't. We will most likely cause our own extinction within the next 1000 years - and the planet will slowly recover.

Never forget that we have only been on this planet for a celestial 5 minutes at most. We're no more than a brief shrug of Planet Earth's shoulder.

Shade17 · 05/11/2021 21:28

I’d imagine that each driver in the household can only drive one at a time. We’ve two drivers and 10 cars currently.

@DecadentlyDecisive

I "square" many things with myself that would possibly have you quivering with anxiety OP - because I'm a thinking, reasoning adult more than capable of making decisions based on what is best for my situation & circumstances.

I'm more interested in what your friends think of you....Wink

@KayKayWat
To an extent I agree (though I don’t think the human race will be eradicated; far worse than that really), but it’s just so mad to think how far we’ve come through evolution, how many infinitesimal odds we beat to get to where we are - but we’re happy to throw it all away now. And for nothing!

msgreen · 05/11/2021 21:56

I drive a 4 wheel drive its 20 years old ,when living on Dartmoor in the winter its a must .
but I wish I could afford an electric vehicle that would do the same job
I hate being in this position ,We live a very simple life ,don't fly on holiday by choice
we buy second hand where possible ,and buy food and household goods with a low carbon foot print.
Our mileage is super low and if we changed our vehicle now the foot print of a new car disposing of the old one would be greater than doing nothing
Sad but true ,its a huge Dilemma many rural people face.
we aren't all driving Chelsea tractors >>>>>>

Flouts1 · 05/11/2021 22:18

Nah especially when I just read that fuck wit Boris and Prince Charles have just flew back in private jets
When those at the top start using crap public transport and stop flying in private jets I might consider doing my bit it but until then I will carry on driving my gas guzzling planet fucking diesel suv
I will carry on taking my 3-4 holidays abroad and I will carry on eating meat and I’m sure my family will do the same
Oh I don’t feel bad because I only had one child so that’s my contribution to saving the planet 😂 so I can drive my car with no guilt 😂

The above is in a nutshell why people drive SUVs, and but fast fashion, but plastic covered crap etc essentially we all think we are good at thinking and make " rational decisions " but we are crippled by cognitive bias. www.simplypsychology.org/cognitive-bias.html
Essentially crappy errors in our thinking that make us make poor decisions in many circumstances.
Put simplistically we are smart enough to be the dominant species but not smart enough to understand how we're fucking hopeless at making good long term decisions...
We are probably doomed

BasicDad · 05/11/2021 22:51

@LittleGwyneth

I buy a lot of clothes, mostly from Zara. I really like clothes. I don't think my £250 a month shopping habit is going to be the reason the planet burns.
About 25% the CO2 of running a large diesel SUV per year
lazylinguist · 05/11/2021 22:58

It baffles me how people assume we have a God given right to still be here in 10,000 years time.

Who's saying that?! I don't think most people give much thought to what will be happening in 10,000 years' time tbh. And most of them probably don't believe in god either.
