To want to restrict how much we have the heating on

After a winter working from home last year we were hit with a horrendous heating bill (several thousand on top of already paying quite a high amount per month). So this year with gas prices being so high I’m really conscious of being careful. DH wants it on much more than I do and it’s causing endless rows. He’s turned it on 4 separate times today and is sulking when I comment. We share heating bills - I suggested he pays more to have it on more but he refuses.

How much do you have the heating on if you work from home?

Reallyagain, that's the main point isn't it - you can't afford £600+ per month on power bills (tbh, there's probably very few who can) so your DH needs to do something to address the issue, whether that's wearing sensible clothing or going back to the office - and checking that your bills are correct.

With environmental issues and further price increases the cost of fuel is likely to get worse.

reallyagain · 02/11/2021 08:47

Thanks moomaid - I've just moved to octopus.

Just come back to the house after being outside - feels toasty just like my lovely local coffee shop did. Believe me no-one is at miserably cold! Meanwhile DH is just out of his cold shower

I think as a priority you need to find out why you are paying so much for your energy every month and I'm stunned that you think it's a normal monthly price, that's pretty much our yearly cost in one month.

TatianaBis · 02/11/2021 08:48

@reallyagain

Terrace c1400 sq ft
So you’re paying almost double what we’re paying for a house that’s roughly a quarter of the size, that’s attached on both sides.

I also work from home so have the heating on during the day. (Not in every room).

I wear a jumper or fleece and sheepskin slippers. But even so I’m a chilly person, I don’t like being cold, the house is warm.

reallyagain · 02/11/2021 08:49

Tokyo where did I say I found it a normal monthly payment? The whole basis of my thread is that it isn't!

Tokyo you must often find yourself stunned when you make up what other people have said 😁

OP posts:
ThePoisonousMushroom · 02/11/2021 08:51

That’s half the size of our house and you pay more than double what we pay a month, and we have an old crap boiler and I also have a DH who puts the heating on constantly.
I don’t know why you’re not being more proactive in figuring out why your bill was so high as it sounds like a mistake to me. You could be entitled to a substantial refund.

FigureofEight · 02/11/2021 08:51

@FlickerBeat

I still have yet to put mine on and probably won't for a while.

Here are the Uber competitive I can survive in the Arctic in a bikini people.

Yawn.

Everyone is different. Everyone's house is different. Good for you for being hard core

MoomaidAhoy · 02/11/2021 08:52

800 years ago when I was a child, my sad used to turn the hearing down and say “think of the environment” It really stuck. Would you husband be willing to adjust for that reason?

hangrylady · 02/11/2021 08:52

I'm on your husband's side here. I hate being cold and refuse to scrimp on heating and sit round like the Michelin man in my own home. I'd rather cut back in other areas if I want to save some money.

user564398 · 02/11/2021 08:53

So how much did you pay for the whole year OP?

TokyoDreaming · 02/11/2021 08:53

@reallyagain

Because you seem to be focusing on the fact that your husband likes to be warm rather than the fact that your bill is insanely high.
megletthesecond · 02/11/2021 08:53

19° is cold. I'm trying to stick with 21° day and night this winter. Although my heating was always on when in was in the office anyway.

Mine was stuck on 23° day and night last winter and cost me £140 a month. (Boiler was being weird everytime I changed the temperature and didn't want it tinkered with until spring).

reallyagain · 02/11/2021 08:54

The poisonous I've already said a couple of times I went through the bill with a tooth comb. It was very unfortunately correct and the meter isnt faulty. Youve decided I wasn't proactive with no basis for that assumption.

Honestly posting a thread on mn where people don't read your posts and make up things youve supposedly said which you haven't is hard work!

YANBU. Layers are effective and free but heating is expensive.
I can recommend a heated gilet - we bought one for FIL who feels the cold as he's on blood thinners. It has little battery packs that tuck in invisibly and is a sort of wearable electric blanket. It looks like a normal felted wool gilet so smart enough for Zoom calls etc. Got it on Amazon (sorry). He loves it.
Our house is pretty cold & we have a plug in radiator (Chicco) which is brilliant at chucking out the heat, even on a low temp. Means your hands and feet don't go dead if you can't move around. Can you get a couple of those & only use in rooms where he is? £660 is an eye-watering amount to spend so he can waft around in a shirt Grin

reallyagain · 02/11/2021 08:56

I tend to focus on things that can be changed rather than things in the past which can't, hence changing supplier and asking that we change our behaviour with use of the heating. If that doesn't sound sufficiently indignant for you then I'll not apologise

OP posts:
ThePoisonousMushroom · 02/11/2021 08:56

Fine 🤷🏻‍♀️, sorry. It just seems that unless he has it on at 30 degrees constantly it isn’t actually possible to be so high. But I’ll stop posting now.

But why should your husband change? People are allowed to feel comfortable in their own home.

Honestly I think you're focusing on the wrong thing here.

gcgirlsrock · 02/11/2021 08:59

I have just checked op. Our bill has gone up 50% this is more to do with the global energy crisis than your dh. Most people are going to be in this position.

reallyagain · 02/11/2021 09:00

Why should he change? Ecause we can't afford it, I've said this many times in this thread. If you think people should live beyond their means and not be expected to alter their behaviour towards living the way they can afford then we clearly disagree

OP posts:
reallyagain · 02/11/2021 09:01

gcgirl the figure I'm quoting we're last year, which is why I said I was particularly concerned about now with prices rising, again I've said all this already in the thread. I know it's boring to read a whole thread

The high bills were last year before the gas price went up.
Whinge · 02/11/2021 09:03

Last winter when your bills were averaging £660 a month, how often did you have the heating on and at what temperature?

TokyoDreaming · 02/11/2021 09:04

I get that you can't afford it but as you have been told countless times the bills you have been paying are not correct so get that sorted and the bills will then be affordable.

Apologies if you have already said but is that £600+ a month just for gas? If it is how much is your electricity bill?

reallyagain · 02/11/2021 09:04

Whinge it was on an awful lot, and high temp. So clearly those areas need to be addressed which is what I'm trying to do
