For crying over my unemployment?

I've tried to remain positive, so far I've had a few interviews, still no offer, one really good feedback:

They felt you were really good and definitely 'company' material but were unsure with your skill set and experience if this was 100% exactly the right role for you right now for them and they were trying to come to terms where you'd best fit in with their organisation etc - falling short of just creating a role for you!

I still fill like a failure and like I'll never be able to find a job again. I'm still waiting from some other internal recruiter who completely ghosted me (so unless they come up with something within similar lines of "we'll create a job for you") I don't quite understand why it's taking so long.

I still have another interview on Thursday but I feel extremely deflated and almost ready to give up on life.

Don't give up. Something will turn up
I was made redundant in 2009 from a decent job. Worked minimum wage until 2013 and was so deflated. Circumstances meant I didn't work then until sept this year. Randomly I was persuaded to apply for a great job, similar to what I did 20 years ago. Would never have had the confidence without that push.
Good luck, and I hope something great turns up soon.

Terribleluck · 01/11/2021 16:35

Thanks @Norma. I also have the added pressure that I'm the main breadwinner, so I can't just take any job... It needs to be a job that pays enough. I just go into this negative cycles where I hate everything in my life, feeling trapped, knowing (or thinking) that there could be a better life out there for me.

Try and stay as positive as you can. If you feel you are getting depressed then please go and see your GP. Mental health is so important. Good luck with your interview. You will be a great fit for a job out there. xx

Terribleluck · 01/11/2021 17:29

I've already contacted the self-referral , but they only offer CBT and I'm too cynical for it (I know what the cure is, and my worries are real). GP will send me valium (they have in the past) but I don't think medication is really what works for me.

I feel your pain, in fact I was about to start a thread in the same direction.

I am visually impaired, was a SAHM and then suffered a serious, life-changing illness and now that I’ve been trying to get back into Qwork it just isn’t happening. Not just because I’m not getting jobs I’m going for, but because of accessibility etc. I’ve already had one employer withdraw a job offer after 6 months Because their system couldn’t be made accessible, and another one be unable to provide reasonable adjustments in order for me to do a typing test at an interview, another one who withdrew an interview again because of the need for reasonable adjustment to complete a questionnaire, whose attitude was “if we offered the job to you and the system wasn’t able to be made accessible, it wouldn’t exactly be fair to a sighted person who we turned down to give you the job would it?

I’ve actually reached the point where I don’t actually think it’s worth looking for work any more, and for now I have given up.

HeartsAndClubs · 01/11/2021 17:32

to get back into work

Terribleluck · 01/11/2021 17:39

@alternative that sounds really hard ... Aren't they being discriminating? Or do you think they're just ticking boxes by interviewing you?

OP posts:
SoniaFouler · 01/11/2021 17:46

@AlternativePerspective

That’s appalling. On the bright side, at least you escaped from working with/for such an arsehole(s).

I’m in the same boat and don’t have any qualifications or experience for any employment other than entry level jobs and I haven’t even been able to reach the interview stage on those at the moment. Bad luck or I’m just plain thick, I don’t know, but it’s depressing, I understand. Chins up, it’ll work out soon enough 🤞🏽

ShittyGlitter · 01/11/2021 17:57

What type/area of specialism are you looking for OP? Someone might be able to provide more tailored advice for you.

AlternativePerspective · 01/11/2021 17:59

@ Terribleluck they absolutely are, but there really is no recourse because reasonable adjustment is so subjective.

The worst of it is that two of the organisations were government organisations.

In the case of one, they were very much on board, didn’t want access to work involved and went out and bought the access software themselves. I went down to test it and it wasn’t accessible at all, not even a little bit inaccessible, but entirely. At that point they got the software company involved who couldn’t come up with a solution, so they agreed that ATW could become involved to do an assessment. However when I went to apply for access to work they asked for a start date, and the employer was unwilling to give me one, and a month later they withdrew the offer.

The other one I’ve had 2 assessment invites and each time I’ve asked for reasonable adjustment, and each time they’ve claimed not to have been aware of that request and they’ve cancelled the assessments.

The other one I looked at reviews for after I’d been turned away and by all accounts they were an awful company to work for so I probably did have a lucky escape.

i applied for UC for help to get back to work, and they sent me jobs for things like car park attendants and jobs requiring a full driver’s licence.

And part of my issue is that I can’t apply for everything. I can’t apply to work in a supermarket or in hospitality because those jobs just aren’t accessible, i.e. cash registers aren’t, and a blind person carrying drinks/food… well…. ;) or I would be working in my local Tesco by now.

So I’ve genuinely given up. I will probably get past it at some poin, but right now I don’t see the point.

@shittyglitter - account management/ biz dev (about a year), customer success management (6-7 months) / online / outsourced operations (6-7 years). But it has to be fully remote.

OP posts:
MintJulia · 01/11/2021 18:05

Don't lose heart OP. Take the feedback, think about how to improve how you present yourself, and you'll get the next one. Brew

GrimDamnFanjo · 01/11/2021 18:32

OP it's honestly a numbers game.
Once you are getting interviews it's just a matter of time before you get hired.
For your next interview go through your skill set and be ready to give real life examples of where you match the requirements of the role.
This will increase your confidence as you can see why you should be successful.
Imagine yourself doing the job already.
Good luck!

Have you considered working for yourself?
I employ a fully remote business manager.
I hired her via www.vact.co.uk which I've recommended on mn before.

Don't give up finding work is a hard slog and some times it feels like you are a failure. I have been a job seeker 3 times in the last 7 years out of work and older than most. I changed career in my mid 40s no experience it took me 12 months and only two interviews to get a job. In the end I got a call from a company I sent my CV to 9 months previously. After 2 years there they had to let some staff go and I was one. It took another 8 months and 3 interviews layer with just some experience to get my job now and it's good pay and secure. Please remember if you don't get a job it's the opinion of only one or two people usually and your just a number. Don't take it personal keep trying and so.e thing will come. Just keep trying, it's soul destroying but you will find something it's just a matter of time.

Retrodas · 01/11/2021 18:41

Op just to add, LinkedIn is a great way to find work now days, spend some time an creating yourself a good profile and add all your friends. Good luck.

Terribleluck · 01/11/2021 18:59

@grim I tried with Virtalent and it was hell, we kind of ghosted each other in the end. I agree it's a numbers game, but I don't know I feel like with this number of interviews I would have hoped to land something by now. And yes, it's only been a month, but last time I was made redundant I just took any job for a whole year and I think that was incredibly detrimental all way round.

OP posts:
Terribleluck · 01/11/2021 19:01

And yes I know the power of LinkedIn, that's how I got my previous role!

OP posts:
Worrysaboutalot · 01/11/2021 19:35

I am in a similar situation to AlternativePerspective
Looking for work after being a SAHM and having a life changing illness.

I am now in a wheelchair and I already had invisible hearing and bowel issues to start with!

I am finding it very difficult to find out which jobs will be even possible for me to do. Then arriving at an interview and finding the building won't work for me. I know they are meant to make allowances but why would anyone bother when the next candidate needs none.

That said I am going to keep applying. The right job will not pass me by.

Terribleluck · 01/11/2021 21:06

@worry what about WFH as a CS representative?

OP posts:

Have you tried The Work from Home Hub- UK page on FB, OP?

It’s purely remote jobs listed on there.

Stay positive, the right one will come along soon.
