If the clocks didn’t change, would you prefer BST or GMT?

If they decided we wasn’t going to change the clocks anymore would you prefer this time staying GMT (being as the summer time has lots of daylight anyway) or would you prefer to always be on BST?

YABU -this time GMT
YANBU- BST

Definitely BST. It's always brightest by 8.30 a.m. at the very latest, so I don't understand the brighter mornings argument for it. I like dark evenings too, but dark by 4 p.m. is too depressing. 5 p.m. is fine.

sbhydrogen · 01/11/2021 10:37

British Summer Time allllll year round, thanks.

I would also wish for a British Summer all year round, but that's not what the OP asked 🤣

I guess you're in the south of England. "8.30 am at the latest" does not apply in the rest of the country.

If it's going to be dark by the time you get out of work, then I don't see it matters if it's dark an hour earlier "Lighter morning" also means your car has had a bit longer to defrost and the ice on the windscreen is a bit easier to remove.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/11/2021 10:52

GMT is better because there’s more light in the mornings - I’m in the South but people in the North of England and Scotland would have such long dark mornings with BST all year.

GMT is the real time anyway

MrsFin · 01/11/2021 10:54

@Mycatismadeofstringcheese

We could split the difference by half an hour and be GMT+0.5 all year round, just to be awkward and out of step with everyone else.
Love this idea! Macron would hate it, so that makes it even better :)

@Sonex

I remember the Scottish farmer argument too. I met a Scottish farmer recently and he said he doesn't care anymore because his tractors are all automated now and self drive over GPS so he'd just get up when it was light and go and check on them then Grin
@Sonex

We are a fair bit away from fully automated, there was a edition of country file devoted to automation, I think its on catch up, it was quite information and a good starting point for the layperson

GMT. I hate dark mornings - in the middle of winter, even on GMT, it's not light where I live until about half past nine.

As for the lighter evenings BST brings - the defining factor in whether you can sit out late at night isn't how light it is, but how warm it is. If it's warm enough you can sit out till 10pm - you don't need it to be light until then.

CounsellorTroi · 01/11/2021 11:26

When I was working I would have said BST every time. Hated being in the office when it was dark outside, I felt.sort of trapped. Now that I’m retired I have no strong feelings either way.

80sMum · 01/11/2021 11:34

@Finzi

GMT because I dislike the dark mornings more than I dislike the dark evenings, and it allows most schoolchildren to be able to get to and from school in daylight for most of the year.
But that would also mean that it would be getting light at around 3.30am in June. I'd prefer to have the daylight hours when I'm up and about.
3cats4poniesandababy · 01/11/2021 11:36

GMT for the lighter mornings. Does it really make that much difference in summer if it is light at 3.30 or 4.30 - you will still need black put blinds/curtains if the light effects your sleep.

DrunkenKoala · 01/11/2021 11:37

GMT.

Beachhutgirl · 01/11/2021 11:40

BST - if we had GMT in the summer it would be getting dark early in the evening by late August, when I still like to be out and about, or at the beach after work.

Hollyhead · 01/11/2021 11:41

BST for sure, I don’t care about light in the mornings, but it being light until 5 in the depths of winter would be great!

Playingoutinthedark · 01/11/2021 11:41

How is it honestly a hassle or faff to switch between now? Everything in my house automatically changed itself. One measely clock needed changed and clearly no one looks at it because we didn't notice until the kids said they needed to take themselves to bed an hour early.

RandomLondoner · 01/11/2021 11:45

To repeat what I said on the other thread, I want GMT because it's more historical, and whatever we pick doesn't need to affect how much light we have in any point of the day, as we can just agree to change the times we do things.

MaybeAMoaner · 01/11/2021 11:47

When the OP says “we wasn’t going to change the clocks”
That’s wrong isn’t it?
Shouldn’t it be “we weren’t going to change the clocks?”

Genuine question, not being goady. I might be wrong.

Finzi · 01/11/2021 12:08

But @80sMum, it would still be light in the evenings in June if we kept to GMT all year. Would you really like it to be dark until 9-10 am in the winter?

LampLighter414 · 01/11/2021 12:11

BST for me

Ponoka7 · 01/11/2021 12:15

We need light mornings. In heavily congested areas and everyone rushing around, parking as close to schools as possible, it's dangerous enough without throwing in darkness. In areas that get a lot of frost and have narrow roads and turns, again we need as much light as possible.

EBearhug · 01/11/2021 12:16

BST.

Definitely not a half hour. I can cope with people being an hour ahead or 5 hours behind or whatever, but half hour differences rather than full hours fries my brain, and some of us do have to work across timezones.

DeepaBeesKit · 01/11/2021 12:18

GMT. I hate dark mornings and really don't want kids walking to school in the dark.

I have no issue with dark evenings.

amsadandconfused · 01/11/2021 12:21

@ditavonteesed

GMT because that's what the clock in my car is and I have no idea how to change it.
Same here 😊
DeepaBeesKit · 01/11/2021 12:22

BST as I hate the dark evenings on GMT. Conversely GMT would means it getting light at 2.30am in the height of summer.

This isnt true? In england at least sunrise on 21st june would be at 3.45am gmt, 4.45 BST.

meltingappointment · 01/11/2021 12:26

@MaybeAMoaner

I think as you understood the question it doesn't matter. English, and the writing of English, is simple communication. OP communicated exactly what they wanted to and if you are not being toady but posing a genuine question I'm sure you could learn elsewhere. That would eliminate any doubt over your intent.
