AIBU to not have bought any sweets for trick or treaters?

Even though my kids are older and not bothered by all that anymore, pre-COVID I did used to buy lots of sweets and put a pumpkin out for any other children.

Now I just imagine the bowl sweets as COVID soup waiting to happen. Not to mention numerous hands ringing the doorbell. So my plan was to leave the front of the house in darkness and sit in our main living room ignoring anyone who might ring the bell. 😬

But I’m not sure if I’m being a Halloween Grinch (whatever the equivalent would be for Halloween, I guess the Grinch would be a Halloween lover not a hater).

YANBU - too risky and there won’t be many kids coming knocking anyway

YABU - the kids have missed out last year, let them have their fun this year, the risk is low etc

@coogee

I bought sweets last year and nobody called. I bought sweets this year too then remembered that we would be away.

I’ve brought them with us but if anybody calls here I will be very surprised/alarmed. We are in the middle of nowhere.

I've got the music from "Halloween" going through my head now.....

The evening went well the door closed by 7.30pm all good until 22.30 when some idiot young teenagers banged on the door dressed up waking DS.

I've no issue with teenagers knocking for treats at a reasonable time when the streets are busy.

9.30 the clocks going back have me confused. 😳

I adopted my usual strategy. Bought a couple of bags of "fun size" chocolate treats just in case. However I did Not decorate or put out a pumpkin. HellI didn't intend to encourage them!

As it was the weather tonight was so miserable and wet I don't think anyone was out anyway.

So, as usual we get to late evening on the 31st with a substantial amount of chocolate that nobody has come to claim.

Oh dear. GrinGrinGrin

We had a few groups, did from 6pm-7pm and then took all the decorations down, removed the pumpkin from the window, shut the curtains and turned the lights off downstairs.

Ds loved it giving sweets out but I didn't want the door going when I'm trying to bath him and do bedtime. It worked well.

Does this actually ever work? I remember posts in my local FB group about people doing this and it takes about 10 minutes before some cheeky teenagers take the lot and leave nothing for others.

Worked for us...no one rang the bell and the sweets were almost gone by morning

julieca · 01/11/2021 10:04

@georgarina it only works if all the trick and treaters are young kids going around with parents. If it is older kids by themselves, of course, the kids grab the lot.

Cuntness · 01/11/2021 11:21

@georgarina

Why don't you put a bowl of sweets on the doorstep if you don't want kids ringing the bell?
I did this last night as I've got really bad PGP (I'm having the baby on Wednesday) so getting up to answer the door was really beginning to hurt, and the dog was getting annoying.

I happened to be in the kitchen window when I saw four older boys run off my drive and down the street. I just knew what they'd done.

I went out and made them give it all back. I know I sound like a mad woman, and it was completely unlike me, but I just saw red, because I don't have to put out anything. A dad was passing by with his kids and ripped into the boys as well.

I'm not bothering next year. Little shits ruining it for others.
