AIBU to think that it’s gone a bit crazy this year?
Houses decorated from top to toe, massive queues at the fancy dress shop in the city yesterday, everyone I meet talking about parties, local shops giving out treat bags...

It seems much more of a thing this year than ever before.
I’m not against it, just wondering if anyone else has noticed?

Because people missed it last year. We have been so restricted for so long I think people are just enjoying everything a bit more now. It'll be the same for Christmas and New Year, I bet Easter will be huge next year too as we have had 2 restricted Easters.

TrickOrTreat21x · 31/10/2021 06:56

No, it's always been like this in recent years your probably just noticing it more as Halloween was cancelled last year.

DancingintheSpoonlight · 31/10/2021 06:57

I haven't noticed a huge effort around here necessarily, other than a lot of people have been posting on Social Media about going to Pumpkin Patches (which until very recently I thought they only did in America)

I never did Halloween growing up but the past few years have enjoyed making a bit of an effort, perhaps using it as an excuse to do something different and a bit of fun especially having had so much restriction the last few years.

iloverainydays · 31/10/2021 06:58

Interesting! I'm a bit of a recluse and have been working so hard this week that I haven't noticed this Grin will make myself go out for some walks today to see the decorations.

Happy Halloween to people who are marking the day somehow! πŸŽƒ

SunShinesBrightly · 31/10/2021 06:59

I think you’re right about Christmas!
I’ve never seen Halloween houses decorated on the same level as Christmas! This year whole estates near here are taking part!

It's definitely become more of an event here this year. Most people I know have gone to a pumpkin patch and lots are having some kind of party. Agree with pp, I imagine it's because everyone's missed out on so many celebrations that we may as well make the most of the ones that are able to happen .
In our little village though a lot less homes have decorations this year whereas lots used to go all out. I wonder if they're worried about trick or treaters going door to door.

Same here! We have two tiny pumpkins near the window! I’ve actually enjoyed seeing other people’s houses decorated!

Maybe! We’ve got used to β€˜nothing happening’ haven’t we?

It's quite muted here compared to pre covid. It will be raining too tonight. I hope the DC enjoy it anyway though.

SmellyOldOwls · 31/10/2021 07:12

It's the pumpkin patches and Halloween trails and fright nights, you never used to get them. But they are fun and it's something to do during half term so is that actually a problem? No one is being forced to go to them.

Here is an interesting article about the origins of trick or treating for anyone who likes to complain about it being too American. Irish and Scottish settlers brought the tradition to America. It is a Celtic tradition.

We have a storm here at the moment!
I guess the howling wind and rain will add to the effect later?!

I don’t think one person has said it’s a problem! RTT

Sorry I'm just so used to whinging on here about Halloween Blush

lap90 · 31/10/2021 07:16

I do think it has become increasingly popular over the years.

Having said that, houses decorated for Halloween, at least where i live, are still very few!

DockOTheBay · 31/10/2021 07:16

I haven't seen any houses decorated to the nines, just the odd pumpkin here and there.

I have seen more people (friends on FB) having parties, but obviously we haven't been able to have parties for quite a long time so people are taking any opportunity now. Can't say I blame them!

Blankiefan · 31/10/2021 07:16

It's definitely bigger round here this year. Making up for COVID, i think. I think it's a good thing tho. It's really clear which houses are up for guising which makes it easier for those who don't want to take part.

Kljnmw3459 · 31/10/2021 07:18

Here it's the opposite... Nothing for families at all. Couple of Halloween pub events for adults. I have a feeling there won't be many pumpkins out tonight for trick or treating.

Shelovesamystery · 31/10/2021 07:18

Dd(6) is ridiculously excited about Halloween this year. She told me that she loves it more than Christmas. I'm not sure why as we don't usually go very big on Halloween. We carve pumpkins, put up a few small decorations and either go out trick or treating for an hour or have a little party with her cousins. We obviously had a very low key Halloween last year, no trick or treating, no party. And she can probably only remember 1 or 2 years before that so I'm not sure why she thinks Halloween is this huge, exciting event.

I do think that everyone is just enjoying things that little bit more after being unable to for so long. I know I've definitely been swept up in Dd's excitement and bought extra decorations, done more Halloween activities with them etc because I still feel a fair bit of guilt over what they have missed out on due to lockdowns.

We grew up Roman Catholic and we all went trick or treating - Halloween is very close in time to β€˜All Souls day’ which is in the 2nd Nov this year.
A celebration of life a bit like the Mexican day of the dead.

I haven’t decorated as much this year but some years I do (my children are getting older). We had a trip to the pumpkin patch and my younger daughter is going to her friends party tonight and my older daughter is having her boyfriend over to do pumpkin carving and baking! I think I get to chill and eat ghosts and witches fingers later Halloween Grin

SunShinesBrightly · 31/10/2021 07:20

Day of the dead (El DΓa de los Muertos) is also 2nd Nov this year.

That’s a shame if you have young children & want to join in. Maybe see if there are any local events taking place?

No, I get it! I’m just musing really!

We’re not doing anything and our house will be in darkness Halloween Blush but my DC are all going to Halloween nights in the city.

Here it’s disappointing, people used to travel
To our estate locally as it always made such a great effort pre covid, this year is disappointing so the opposite for us!
