Noisy eaters shouldn't go out in public

I was sat us a nice country put earlier (i.e. small and cosy) and the man on the next table crunched his way through a packet of Tyrrell's very crunchy crisps. Bad enough but then picked at his teeth and generally slapped his mouth about for a good 10 minutes after. I had to leave.

This isn't the first time. I've been subjected to loud chewers in restaurants before now as well. Aibu to think that if you can't eat quietly and not also your mouth about then you shouldn't eat unless you are in a sealed room. Or box in your garden.

  • and not slap your mouth about.

Was so worked up I incurred typing errors.

A restaurant is annoying but at least you're supposed to eat there.
It's when they eat like that on public transport Angry

NiceGerbil · 30/10/2021 23:02

Were you local? Was he?

Maybe you were at his table and he was doing passive aggressive munching Grin

Is it important they were Tyrrells?

NiceGerbil · 30/10/2021 23:03

Come to our local.

If someone eating crisps gets that reaction then you will probably need to take to your bed after the pubs round here!

PeachesPumpkin · 30/10/2021 23:05

And snorers shouldn’t go to sleep first.

WinterCarlisle · 30/10/2021 23:06

YANBU.

Absolutely a box at the end of the garden.

lljkk · 30/10/2021 23:07

That's an interesting hill to die on.

TheBlackDarner · 30/10/2021 23:08

I sympathise.
I have a jaw that clicks noisily when I eat.
I sit in a soundproof room, and the family slide pancakes and sandwiches under the door, before retiring to a safe distance.

YABU.

OP look up misophonia. Eating sounds are a classic trigger. I feel like I want to rip my ears off when i hear people crunching crisps and slapping their mouths around... but I do acknowledge it's my issue and people would die if they didn't eat so asking them to stop is probably unreasonable... imprisoning them at home probably not v fair either Confused

Thedogscollar · 31/10/2021 01:22

Why are Tyrells so noisy??Hmm

Topseyt · 31/10/2021 01:30

Did he scrunch his crisp packet up, blow his nose and fart at the same time?

Snugglybuggly · 31/10/2021 01:32

Jeez so intolerant

Snugglybuggly · 31/10/2021 01:33

Maybe you shouldn't go out in public

RichTeaRichTea · 31/10/2021 01:35

It sounds horrible. Do you think he knows he is a noisy eater? I think probably the only answer is for you to eat a packet of crisps too to drown him out

Workinghardeveryday · 31/10/2021 01:37

Dp eats like a pig. Puts me off every meal. Chomps, slurps every mouthful, eats with mouth open and to top it off his jaw clicks with every chew. It’s gross.

jetadore · 31/10/2021 06:41

Noisy eaters are usually oblivious so any hope of self-moderation is futile.

Endpress · 31/10/2021 06:45

😄🤮. It’s think it’s worse after lock down. When lockdown first opened up it was like some people couldn’t stop talking and eating noisily simultaneously and the noises - man!

UnsuitableHat · 31/10/2021 06:49

Yanbu as this made me laugh.

IsleofRum · 31/10/2021 07:45

It's when they open their mouths whey they chew. Auuuuugh.

Ive come to the conclusion that its not misophonia, just people have revolting manners these days. The wolfing, cramming, chomping and then teeth picking and mouth mangling is not me, its them.
Workinghardeveryday · 31/10/2021 08:54

Not misophonia here, just bad manners. I had to move from my usual chair at teatime because I couldn’t sit next to him anymore. It’s not just me, even the kids have noticed and mentioned it to me. He chews with his mouth open. It’s the slurping that drives me mad. How is it possible to slurp chips? He can snd does.

Personally I think it was the way he was brought up, never corrected for it, no social manners around meals. No small talk, just sits and eats like a pig!!

When we used to go out to eat if he ordered soup a bit of me died inside 😬

IamMaz · 31/10/2021 09:31

I know how you feel. We have a great, male, single friend who we invite to stay with us in our holiday home every now and then.
Each time he stays, his farting, burping and teeth picking does my head in!!! Not to mention the wee on the underside of the toilet seat in his en-suite bathroom after he leaves....
Yuck.

I feel like saying 'Right! Our rules are farting, burping and teeth picking are only allowed in private!'
Not sure how to address the wee issue though. We already ask him to leave the en-suite as he found it. I guess he doesn't look as he has a cleaner in his home.

KittenKong · 31/10/2021 09:36

@Thedogscollar

Why are Tyrells so noisy??Hmm
Kettle crisps are worse!
VanillaSpiceCandle · 31/10/2021 10:02

I agree with a PP. It’s not misophonia but just being justifiably disgusted with someone’s bad manners. There’s no need to eat like a pig but to then pick your teeth, fucking revolting.

Saying that these people have obviously never been corrected and you can’t say anything unless you’re very close so no easy solution.
