Oh forgot to add, I loved visiting Staffa which has rocks like the Giants Causeway but you go by boat via Iona (also lovely). You need good weather though.

Drystone walls do not just exist in the UK. They're very common in Ireland for starters. And on that note, a previous poster suggested Blarney Castle, which isn't in the UK. Confused

With regards to the right to roam, someone mentioned not being sure of how N Ireland and Wales compare with England and Scotland. There is no right to roam in N Ireland, it's very restricted. Not sure about Wales.

Now, to the question being asked!

My children's favourite UK places have been

HMS Belfast
London in general
Ironbridge museums, particularly Blists Hill
York, especially the Shambles and the Yorvik museum
Windsor Castle
Bekonscot Miniature village
Titanic museum Belfast
Caernarfon Castle

And whilst children aren't generally huge fans of scenery and the like, even they enjoyed the walk up to Symonds Yat and the view over the Wye valley

  4. An iconic museum (Natural History, Science etc)
  5. A bridge which was/is a feat of engineering (Clifton suspension bridge, Iron Bridge, Forth road bridge)
  6. A Royal or Stately building (Buck Palace, Houses of Parliament etc)

  8. A national park with big hills in to walk up

Brimham Rocks 🪨

eggandonion · 31/10/2021 09:58

I think Legoland won for my kids, and a soccer stadium tourBlush despite lots of castles, museums and stately homes. Im trying to convince my husband to get a set of os maps, and 'do' one at a time.
I need to go back to Cornwall to see Tintagel again, it has a new bridge? And now the Bude tunnel.

  • pantomime
  • a ballet or opera
  • major football or rugby match
  • Wimbledon
  • big race meeting (ideally Epsom on Derby Day)
  • county/agricultural show

  • Formula One race/Goodwood Festival of Speed
  • Edinburgh Festival

The national museums are good and free to enter. The National Mining Museum (near wakefield) is a great day out with kids, you are taken down by an ex-miner. The is also Big Pit in Wales. As the child of parents with Natioanl Trust membership, I would urge caution visiting lots of stately homes/ historic sites. After one they become pretty dull unless there is something specific on. I remember finding the Tower of London quite boring as a child, I loved the Museum of London though.

BiscoffAddict · 31/10/2021 10:18

Alton Towers
Liverpool waterfront
Caernarfon Castle
The Shambles in York
Cardiff Bay
Blackpool Tower

The Isle of Wight
The lake district
London
Edinburgh + rest of Scotland
Bath
Wales (hardly been but is important to understand the culture and language)
Ireland (hardly been but want to go)

A Northern Mill like quarry bank Mill or Manchester museum of science and industry shows our industrial past

Castles

Canals

Loads of things!

ZenNudist · 31/10/2021 10:20

Oh yes, York. Amazing

MrsJamieFraser22 · 31/10/2021 10:20

My 2 are similar ages to yours OP, things they have enjoyed are

Trip to Staffa to see Puffins / Fingals cave
Theme Park Alton Towers etc
There are some good National Trust properties that have adventure playgrounds for the kids which they much preferred to those that are “just” a stately home mine loved Culzean Castle and Sudbury Hall
Agree there are good zoos such as Chester but they’re not unique to the UK a wildlife spotting boat trip is a good fun alternative - Sea Eagles & dolphins / porpoises are exciting spots
Eden Project
Sport stadium tour - we did Anfield, none of us are Liverpool fans but all really enjoyed it
Historic city / town for mooching York & Edinburgh are good and St Andrews for somewhere a bit smaller - also good if there’s a golf enthusiast in the family
Skara Brae - I’d wanted to visit since I studied it at primary & it didn’t disappoint kids liked it too
We’ve not done London with the kids yet but going soon so will be using some of the suggestions on here

Simonjt · 31/10/2021 10:20

Make sure you save Bude Tunnel until last as nothing else will compare.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 31/10/2021 12:36

I was in Bude last weekend and forgot to take the DC to the Bude tunnel. They have been before when running errands for Grandparents.

I feel they’ve missed out. I will make sure I go next time. Lucky MIL goes to the Bude tunnel for a visit every week!!

Agree with pp its not necessarily about where you go, or how much it costs, its daft little fun things people remember. We have been reminiscing a lot this month as my Dad has just passed and all of our memories are more to do with things that happened rather than where we were. My eldest DD (22) declared her favourite holiday memory to be when we were walking along the sea front in Torquay and a wave came over the sea wall soaking us all, except for her as she has been running ahead in a strop because she couldn't have a 2nd ice cream Grin

Barwell76 · 31/10/2021 16:17

We went on holiday near to Bude this summer and had never heard of Bude Tunnel til then. I was stunned by the amazing beauty of it The dc were obsessed with driving past it every day.
