Angel of the north Queensferry crossing + Forth road + rail bridge Yorkshire dales, dry stone walls and barns Lands end + John o'groats Fort William to Mallaig train journey Alnwick castle + Holy island Natural History museum Tower of London, London bridge Lake District Globe theatre
I'm curious as to what is so special about Yorkshire's dry stone walls? I live in a neighbouring county and they seem exactly the same here and exactly the same as the county I grew up in about 300 miles away. Are they not all over the UK? Not trying to be rude, just interested!

I much prefer @InTheLabyrinth list. Sorry OP. I don't think it's the actual place but rather the idea that is important. More experiences, than attractions?

What age?

What personalities?

What will they enjoy? I mean a lot of the suggestions sound not so fascinating for a kid! They have their whole lives to see things, according to what they like and when they feel like it!

My biggest cheerful childhood memories are things pretty random and generally to do with family days out nothing special. Me and brother playing in back of car with seats down driving to see relatives (80s).

Die efterling in Netherlands.

Playing space Invaders and pacman in a 'games room' with brother in some random hotel.

Ice cream on beach seaside England.

The swings me and bro went to near grans

Etc etc.

What I have grim memories of-

Really long boring walks to look at a view or rock or something.

Castles that turned out to be small hills to look at.

Being traipsed around various stately homes, gardens, massive museums etc.

Just for a different pov!

NiceGerbil · 30/10/2021 22:53

Can I add another....Liverpool, all of it. So much history around every corner. Mersey ferry and slavery museum are a must.

peruse · 30/10/2021 22:55

The 8th wonder of the world, the Bude Tunnel 😍

Kite22 · 30/10/2021 23:02

I agree with @Ritasueandbobtoo9

It is about "the sorts of things" everyone should have the opportunity to visit / do rather than particular ones, so yes:

a castle
'British Seaside'
National Parks
A Stately Home
A Zoo or Safari park where you can see animals from round the world
A Cathedral
Yes, everyone should visit their capital City - be that the capital of whichever home country they are in, but I'd also say London as well if from NI, Wales or Scotland
Some historic cities - maybe York, Bath, but there are plenty
Some other places that are great to visit - Stratford, Ironbridge, etc.

Between 7 and 12. I haven't saved up enough for the trip yet, in the next couple of years.

Was thinking the same! Blackpool pleasure Beach and the rest they'd be bored to tears, mine anyway!

True dat.

Silverswirl · 30/10/2021 23:10

Gosh loads of these my kids would find as boring as heck and therefore it would be unpleasant for me!
We are out all the time - every chance we get, live in Kent and have pretty much visited every family visitor attraction in the county!
Here are some we like in the SE
London- clipper ride along the Thames from the O2 to embankment passing under London Bridge and walking down south bank / past Big Ben
Emerites cable car
National history museum
Science museum (wonderlab)
Diana memorial fountain and cafe on the surpentine
Greenwich park
Other places:
Paultons park
Splash down waterparks (both the indoor and outdoor sites although the indoor poole one is better)
Chatham dockyard
Bedgebury pinetum riding the bike trails
Diggerland
The dozens of National trust places here including chartwell (home of winston Churchill)
Knowle
Scotney castle
Hever castle including the archery
Isle of white including osbourne house and the swimming at the private beach
New forest is a must
North Wales is amazing for so many adventures including caving, zip wiring and forest activities
We love swimming in the sea on a hot day at sunset
Windsor is a cool place and the castle does have audio guides although some larger National trust properties are just as impressive or more so
The chapel in Windsor castle is magnificent. You can only visit if attending a service but sitting where the royal family and Queen has sat in those wooden benches is incredible and everything is the most ornate / detailed I think I’ve seen in the UK
Drucillas is also a good day out for younger kids and they have some new walk throughs

Loubiemoo · 30/10/2021 23:14

Warwick Castle
Edinburgh Castle
Victoria and Albert Museum
Natural History Museum

Chester Zoo
Jorvik Centre

Avebury, Silbury Hill and Kennet long barrow. All close together and with Avebury you can touch the stones unlike Stonehenge. Also kids love exploring the long barrow.
