How many sheets do you put in the washing machine?

How many sheets/ duvet covers do you put in at once? And how much space are you leaving between the top and the drum?

I put in the whole lot from a king bed, so 4x pillowcase, duvet cover and under sheet. And then throw in some few smaller bits like socks and kids PJs, or a towel.

My rule is that if it comfortably fits in that's fine, if I've had to push it in with any kind of jiggery-pokery, it's not

cardibach · 28/10/2021 17:50

I do as @BigPyjamas does as regards bedding. Don’t really add anything else though, unless maybe a tea towel/dishcloth/bit if underwear is needing a freshen up.

DementedPanda · 28/10/2021 17:51

I've a 11kg machine. Tend to get king size duvet set and two kids single sets in with loads of room.

Ijustknowitstimetogo · 28/10/2021 17:55

Bloody hell 11kg I didn’t know that even exists.

I’ve been doing one at a time as I always worry there’s not enough space for them to move properly. I think I’m over worrying. I do think I need to upgrade my 6kg one though.

One king or two single, with smaller things for the rest of the load. I dry them over the bannisters, so a mixed load works best.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 28/10/2021 18:00

Ours is a 9kgs machine

I’ll do one double bed’s worth and a bath sheet or two sets of singles in it at once.

girlmom21 · 28/10/2021 18:00

We've got an 8kg and always do one bed at a time. If I'm doing the toddler bed I'll throw in some underwear too.

The mattress protector from our super king has to be done separately to the bedding

OnyxOryx · 28/10/2021 18:15

A bedding set. So pillow cases, bottom sheet and duvet cover. All washed together. Its never crossed my mind to do anything else.

gluenotsoup · 28/10/2021 18:18

Ours is a 10kg drum so I can get a lot in, as a general rough rule I only fill the drum to about two thirds full, so there is a decent amount of room for it to move.

Definitely overthinking it. I put my horse blanket in there at the end ofyhe winter. 7kg machine. I can just about squeeze the door shut eventually . It always comes out reasonably clean considering it has zero room to move and yes I boil wash the machine empty after, I'm not totally disgusting . Obviously I want my bedding to be cleaner than that, but I don't have poo stains on my bedding and I wash it weekly not yearly. As long as there's some room for it to move you'll be fine.
needanewlaptop · 28/10/2021 18:23

If you’re my husband … he’d strip every bed in the house and cram it all in together

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 28/10/2021 18:31

I split it up, cos I am sad and don't like to think of it swelching about in its own filth

Plus I have a top sheet and a bottom sheet and use under pillowcases on all six pillows, and it's a superking size and pretty heavyweight cotton.

So, duvet cover and matching pillowcases, then sheets and under slips, so two loads. And a third if dh's side is looking a bit yellow and the mattress cover needs a freshen up...I usually do this every third or fourth go round regardless.

I think my machine is 8kg.

Other beds without the top sheet, just double or king size and only four pillows I'd shove all that in and not worry about it festering.

BarbaraofSeville · 28/10/2021 18:35

I once weighed the amount of washing it said the machine held. It was way more than I thought and I also read that it can be quite full and as long as you can get your fist in the space between the top of the washing and the drum, it isn't too full.

Be aware that on some programmes you aren't supposed to put in the full load, eg an 8 kilo machine might only take 2-4 kg.

Ours is an 8 kilo I think and I put in the king size duvet, sheet, pillow cases and probably some towels, jeans etc too. I don't put in little things as the duvet cover gobbles everything up and I CBA dealing with that.

MrsToothyBitch · 28/10/2021 18:58

I just do the bedding set- 4 pillow cases, duvet cover, bottom sheet. I occasionally pop other stuff in if any stray of a compatible colour and care regime is knocking about and unlikely to fit in with another load any time soon, but our sheets fill my airers so it's rare.

PooWillyNameChange · 28/10/2021 19:05

IpanemaPeaHen · 28/10/2021 19:09

I split it. Duvet cover plus pillow cases then sheet plus under pillow cases and any odd light bits hanging about.

It’s a 40oC cottons wash which takes 1.15 hrs.

Soontobe60 · 28/10/2021 19:11

I’ve always had the biggest machine going - so my current one is 11kg. Means I only need to do 2 washes each week - 3 on the week I do the bedding from 1 king sized bed and 2 bath sheets.

If you fasten up your duvet cover before washing, it tends not to eat the rest of the washing.
HeronLanyon · 28/10/2021 19:14

6k machine. I put one double full set plus one towel possibly two towels (small quite thin bath towels) in at once. Never more. Hot wash. No problems.

NoDecentHandlesLeft · 28/10/2021 19:21

I bung in as much as I can!

Artie30 · 28/10/2021 19:25

That depends on what size machine you have. I have a 9kg. I bung in bedding from a single and 2 double beds to wash altogether.

Malbecfan · 28/10/2021 19:29

I have an 11kg machine and a holiday cottage. I can wash a double & 3 single flat sheets, duvet covers and 10 pillow cases quite easily, sometimes with towels too. They all get line dried & the bedding ironed.

inflatableseahorses · 28/10/2021 19:32

9kg here so I do 2x single bedding sets or 1x super king set. If it's a double (when we've had guests) then I usually do two loads to do all of the bedding, 2 sets of towels and 2 dressing gowns.

ColitisSucks · 28/10/2021 19:34

4 pillow cases, duvet cover, sheet, and whatever else will fit in till it's full. Just like every other load - I don't leave more space in the drum just because I'm washing sheets.

It gets DPs construction worker clothes clean when it's that full, and my sheets aren't that dirty!!

holidaynearlyover · 28/10/2021 19:40

Our whole king sized bedding is one load (that's everything inc pillow cases) or 2 x single bedding, both my children's bedding together
