To think clothes shops should print the price much bigger on their labels

Went clothes shopping today for the first time in ages, and I noticed particularly in the shops which tend to have stuff say 30/35 and older would buy, that in most shops there is no chance of reading the price which is tiny on the label, without keep having to put reading glasses on and off and then I just give up on that shop. Wondered why don't they just print it bigger like say H &M do, so that most people can read the price.

It’s not the shops fault you have crap eyesight. I’m 62 and never had a problem reading prices or care instructions on labels

Poetrypatty · 28/10/2021 17:32

Lucky you GreenGordon

Have you got a pic?

BreakfastOfWaffles · 28/10/2021 17:38

I wear varifocals but would otherwise need to put on reading glasses for pretty much anything. Is this a particularly small label? If you generally need reading glasses, then you could wear maybe them on a chain when shopping. Not stylish but practical! The trouble with bigger labels would be where to draw the line I guess. Your prescription? My prescription?

TheCategoryIs · 28/10/2021 17:41

They probably want you falling in love with the garment before seeing the price.....

Poetrypatty · 28/10/2021 17:46

No pic I'm afraid Grin Yes I can see why people have glasses on a chain now.

that's not a nice way to talk to someone. at your age you should know better. you could say that you have not had a problem without speaking in that manner.

OP, i think it may well be that traders don't want to draw attn to the price.
i shop in poundland and the prices are very clear, but they pride themselves on reasonable prices. i like their pepco clothes.
perhaps you could write to the management of the shops concerned and suggest they use bolder signage.
it would also be more inclusive, re sight-impaired, cognitively challenged, etc. in short, all people.
who are the customers who prefer tiny print.

3scape · 28/10/2021 17:58

Wow. Nice to see MN suggesting crap eyesight has to be someone's fault. It's not up to shops to be accessible to consumers no. Why on earth would they want more people being able to use shops easily Grin

MrsColon · 28/10/2021 18:00

Some people feel embarrassed about visibly looking for the price, and then if it's too expensive feel like they're being judged as "poor" for putting it back. It's a very cunning strategy, but morally shit.

dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 28/10/2021 18:17

YANBU M&S are guilty of this. I sometimes can't find the price at all. I often shop online now though.

All those pesky partially sighted people or with vision problems wanting to see prices. What are they like Hmm

DampSquidGames · 28/10/2021 18:27

I can usually read the price but pop my glasses on to check the size.

Somanysocks · 28/10/2021 18:30

Sometimes easier to take a pic and zoom it.

Tsuro · 28/10/2021 18:33

I had this today in Fat Face, the prices are sizes on the label are so small.

I suspect this may be a case of someone who can’t quite accept that she needs to wear her glasses full time now.

I’ve not noticed this as a problem, but I do wear varifocals when I’m out.

Unfortunately I can't wear them full time as I only need them for reading. In some shops eg H&M or Primark I can read the price no problem. But in others, the price is tiny. E.g. in Cos but there are plenty of other shops which do it.

Sometimes easier to take a pic and zoom it.
Thanks, that's a good idea.

It does make shopping less easy and fun though. Online is easier but it is nice to see things in a shop.

Magnifying glass?

Magnifying glass?

Grin That would work. Might make me look like the Sherlock Holmes of shopping

Totally agree ! Glasses on head or shoved on front of top.. soo annoying

WheelieBinPrincess · 29/10/2021 13:36

There aren’t any nice clothes in the shops at the moment, it’s all midi boxy polyester rubbish. So they probably don’t want you to think too much about the price before you make your purchase.

DampSquidGames · 29/10/2021 13:39

Poetrypatty you could start a Sherlock Holmeseque retro look.

Very sympathetic response Hmm

@Poetrypatty I totally agree with you. I only need glasses for reading . And if I forget to take them when I’m out shopping I can’t see sizes .
@HeddaGarbled Not everyone is long sighted and shortsighted. And so why would they wear varifocals - or reading glasses walking round a shop

MatildaTheCat · 29/10/2021 13:41

Agree Cos and Other Stories are top culprits. I’m lucky enough to still be able to read the tiny print but many, even most, middle aged people I know can’t. I have to read out the prices for my friend regularly.

I think it’s an issue of younger people in retail simply not realising half their target audience is actually middle aged.

Moonbabysmum · 29/10/2021 13:41

I have appalling eyesight, bad enough that glasses cannot find correct it, and have never had a problem with this.

I suggest that if you can't see the labels you need glasses.
