This is my first Halloween in a house so the first time trick or treaters will knock. I'm excited but don't know what to get or how much.
Also would a bowl of satsumas be naff? or cute 😍

I'm so excited this is our first Halloween 🎃 where it really feels like it!

Get some sweets in as well. Don’t be the Fruit Only house.

Willtheymakemegoonthemeds · 27/10/2021 11:54

oh we are in a council estate that is absolutely packed with children so I'm expecting many. A couple of houses near us are done up to the nines aswell which hopefully attracts the hoards of children Halloween Smile

Notimeforaname · 27/10/2021 11:54

Nah it was fruit back when we were kids. Give sweets/lollies things like that.

Willtheymakemegoonthemeds · 27/10/2021 11:55

Oh god no I meant an extra bowl of little jack-o-satsumas as a cute edible decoration. Not as the main treat Blush

AmberRoseGold · 27/10/2021 11:58

I usually offer some Jack-o-satsumas Halloween Grin and also some plastic tat toys (multi pack from super market- spiders etc.. for kids whose allergies/or fussy parents might preclude junky sweets. Planning on same this year.

Willtheymakemegoonthemeds · 27/10/2021 11:59

Just to confirm I'm asking what types of sweets/ treats and how much. Oranges would just be in a bowl outside to take aswell.
I DONT WANT TO GIVE FRUIT FOR HALLOWEEN!!! I WANT TO GIVE SWEETS!!!!
BUT IM NOT SURE HOW MANY PACKS IS NORMAL? I WAS THINKING 2 PACKS OF BIGGER SWEETS LIKE SKITTLES OR SOMEEHTING WITH SOME LITTLE FRUIT CHEWS TO FILL OUT THE BOWL. BUT I DONT REALLY KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT OR HOW MANY BAGS IS ENOUGH. dh doesn't want me to buy 10 packs just incase.
I wouldn't mind though muahahahaha!!

Oh I didn't think of allergies or vegan or stuff. Hmm.
A family when we were kids did a lucky dip and they wrapped all of the mcdonalds toys and small bits they accumulated over the years and gave those. I wonder if that'd be acceptable now.

GIVE WHAT YOU LIKE. ITS NOT DIFFICULT, JUST GO TO SAINSBURY

TooBigForMyBoots · 27/10/2021 12:04

Sweets in wrappers. Give sweets in wrappers, not loose Skittles.

TheLastLonelyBakedBeanInTheTin · 27/10/2021 12:04

So far we've got about 10 bags in, some lf jelly fangs, snakes, spiders, brains etc. Also some lollies and a couple of multipacks of mini bags of sweets. I will probably get another 10 bags on Saturday when I get the Halloween version of 'the fear'

I always over do it though, and we end up with a stash in the cupboard that's still hanging about by Christmas. We don't eat sweets fast in my house. But the first year we had a house and did trick or treating (in a flat before) I didn't order enough and ended up giving out boxes of raisins and the contents of the fruit bowl. Never again!

TheLastLonelyBakedBeanInTheTin · 27/10/2021 12:05

Ooh do the lucky dip that sounds awesome. My DC would absolutely love that! Great idea! I might steal it for next year, thank you OP!

coodawoodashooda · 27/10/2021 12:05

Im making slow cooker fudge and ive bought some hundreds and thousands to make it halloweenie. Figure ill save a fortune.

StrawberrySanta · 27/10/2021 12:07

Don't overthink it, just get several bags of Halloween sweets, in a Halloween bowl and re fill when they're running low. If you have spares, that's better than running out. Please don't get lollies as they're dangerously for young children as they can come off the stick. Chews or little bags of mini haribo or fudge bars etc are good 🎃 my parents decorate their house with a light up skeleton etc and would sometimes run out of sweets and end up using their christmas stash of celebrations, biscuits etc whatever they can find in the house 😂

PooWillyNameChange · 27/10/2021 12:07

I used to live on a street with loads of kids and would fill a big mixing bowl with sweets then if they ran out take my pumpkin in!

Willtheymakemegoonthemeds · 27/10/2021 12:08

See baked beans this is my worry. I want to be the Halloween lady one day, when the kids say 'remember the Halloween house?' in 20 years and then suddenly ill reach magic witch level when the kids realise I am in fact a witch 🧙‍♀️ he he hee. I don't want to be the 'remember he who ran out of sweets and gave pennies' lady.

StrawberrySanta · 27/10/2021 12:09

Maoam stripes are good and maoam joystix too

Willtheymakemegoonthemeds · 27/10/2021 12:10

lmao at taking the pumpkin in!
I never though of that!!

OP posts:
Willtheymakemegoonthemeds · 27/10/2021 12:12

Oh have you made fudge to give out before? OOdashooda?
I love the idea of making cupcakes for the kids. Cheap and cheerful. But I'm worried the parents might say no as I am just a stranger and its a but of a lucky dip in itself, eating strangers baking.

MrsColon · 27/10/2021 12:13

If there are loads of kids on the estate get far more treats than you think you'll need - every year in London we underestimated how much we'd need, and every year I had to cycle to the local shop to buy extras. The last year we were there we gave out over 200 treats!

chocolateicecream · 27/10/2021 12:13

Vegetarian sweets.
My children love it if a house has satsumas on offer.

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 27/10/2021 12:13

Buy loads and loads of assortment bags - the ones where there are little packets or each sweet/chocolate is individually wrapped. As simple as that really!

Don’t forget to decorate your house/door & step/windows at the front so people know to knock.

For extra points dress up too!

Satsumas would be cute.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 27/10/2021 12:15

Get individual mini bags of haribo - ideally the Halloween haribo, and (if you want to be popular) also some individually foil wrapped chocolate eyeballs...

That's enough. Don't give sweets which aren't wrapped individually as they'll pick up muck inside the bag if children collect in a bag, and parents are quite likely to tell children to throw unwrapped sweets away as you never know how hygienic they are (or even whether someone spiteful who actually hates trick or treaters has tampered with/ licked them or something Halloween Envy (not envy)

TheLastLonelyBakedBeanInTheTin · 27/10/2021 12:15

My kids would be happy with pennies so long as you told them they were magic pennies!

But I hear you! I love Halloween and absolutely want to be fun and generous and get caught up in the excitement. I get dressed up and decorate the house and just love all the fun. Next year I want to get all the big decorations for the outside of the house and go bigger. I don't care if it's naff I live for these kind of things since having kids.

I mean, a few hundred years ago I would definitely have Been burnt as a witch by now, and I don't think anyone would be surprised if I did fly off on a broomstick some day. But in the meantime the witch's costume is just for giggles honest! 🤫

Itwasgoodwhileitlasted · 27/10/2021 12:18

I always chuck unwrapped sweets Blush

TroysMammy · 27/10/2021 12:18

I'm only opening my door to the little boy who lives next to me. His Dad is Muslim, unsure how strict, so I've bought Haribo halal jelly worms for him. I'll turn off the lights once he's called as I gave the Halloween decorations I had hoarded to his Mum the other day.
