Is £5 enough in kids bday card

DD has a classmates party coming up. I asked the parents what we can buy (since I’m crap at gifting!), one suggestion was to stick £5 in the birthday card. I’m absolutely fine doing this (it was a v pleasant convo not a CF situation) but wondering if £5 is good enough? Should I give £10? Child will be 6.

We are new to all this party stuff and I’m finding it weirdly stressful

£5 is plenty for a class party.

Hadjab · 27/10/2021 11:07

£5 is more than enough.

BillywigSting · 27/10/2021 11:07

A fiver is fine for a classmates birthday

coodawoodashooda · 27/10/2021 11:08

Yes it's plenty.

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/10/2021 11:08

Maybe £5 and a book?

Sally872 · 27/10/2021 11:08

I would give £10 though I wouldn't think £5 is too little either.

Cash is ideal at a party as they get so many toys they can choose something they like or put if towards something more expensive.

MissKeithsNeice · 27/10/2021 11:09

£5 is definitely fine. Its good to be part of a culture that actively avoids over spending on this stuff - once people start spending more then its hard to go back.

AmDillDandin · 27/10/2021 11:09

£5 is fine, a few of those from classmates and the kid has a nice little pot to spend. It also means that no one feels obliged to spend more when it's their turn to be a guest.

ToastCrumbsOnAPlate · 27/10/2021 11:10

I think it's fine op. What it really comes down to is consistency. Make sure you put the same amount in every card for a class birthday. And also , stick with what you can actually afford.

I had a set amount I added to a collection at work when a staff member was leaving. It was low as there would also be an exodus at a certain point in the year , but everybody got the same so that felt right.

Kotatsu · 27/10/2021 11:10

Our class all do a fiver - means that rather than a load of not necessarily wanted presents, the birthday child gets about 100 quid to spend/save on something amazing they really want - it's fantastic for both all the other parents, and the birthday child.

MissKeithsNeice · 27/10/2021 11:10

Though at that age I just bought bulk bought usbourne sticker books and always gave one of those. Has to be usbourne.

dementedpixie · 27/10/2021 11:12

£5 and a box of Maltesers or one of those bigger bags of sweets (we wrap the sweets so there is a present too)

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 27/10/2021 11:14

I think £5 is fine for a kids birthday unless they were a best friend or they were a bit older and not invited to as many parties. I remember most weekends there being a party early primary school years!

backtolifebacktoreality · 27/10/2021 11:14

Perhaps the parents have suggested £5 as they don't want to get caught up in giving £10 to every class member on their birthday.

00100001 · 27/10/2021 11:15

@Sally872

I would give £10 though I wouldn't think £5 is too little either.

Cash is ideal at a party as they get so many toys they can choose something they like or put if towards something more expensive.

so with possibly 25-30 kids doing this, you'd think its reasonable a 6yo is given around £250+... ??

£5 is plenty... tbh £1 is plenty!

Outnumbered99 · 27/10/2021 11:18

£5 for whole class parties is absolutely fine

CremeEggThief · 27/10/2021 11:19

Plenty.

Namechangehereandnow · 27/10/2021 11:20

I would never give money - just my personal opinion.
Presents are easy for 6 year olds -

Book
Colouring items
Small Lego set
Latest craze item
Hair accessories
Outdoor toys (bubble wand, skippy rope, balls etc)
Craft items
Baking mug set
Tshirt
Small Board game
Jigsaw
Play doh
Money box
Purse/wallet

shouldistop · 27/10/2021 11:20

We usually spend £10 on classmates gifts but my 5yo would be very happy with a fiver in a card. He'd put it in his wallet to save up for something or to buy himself an icecream etc.

SummerSeaSwimmer · 27/10/2021 11:20

£5 is absolutely fine.
My 16 year old got £5 in a birthday card from our neighbour last week and was very happy with that.

KaycePollard · 27/10/2021 11:21

Good lord! £5 is a huge sum to give a 6 year old. It's fine.

Ducksurprise · 27/10/2021 11:22

@dementedpixie

£5 and a box of Maltesers or one of those bigger bags of sweets (we wrap the sweets so there is a present too)
Yup. As they have entered teens I give £10 and a bag of sweets.
MrsColon · 27/10/2021 11:43

I bloody wish that was the done thing here - it's such a pain in the arse having to think about what to buy, whether they'll already have that particular item, remembering to include a receipt, fannying about with wrapping paper and sellotape... a fiver in a card would be brill!

Sillawithans · 27/10/2021 11:46

I think a fiver is a bit tight to be honest. When my kids were smaller is used to buy books in Aldi or pound shop. Lovely books that were pennies but looked more expensive.

TheLastLonelyBakedBeanInTheTin · 27/10/2021 11:48

Yes, definitely
