Waiting until x-ray and very bored - what do you think this could be?

Woke up this morning with abdominal pain. Initially I thought I had an upset stomach as every few months I get a bit of a flare up. But after a trip to the loo nothing changed.

It got much worse an hour in, pain just barely under my rib on the left side and also similar on the right but not as bad and pain radiating across my abdomen between these two points. Also some milder abdominal pain lower down but it was background noise compared to the pain closer to my ribs. Never had this type of pain before. I couldn't get dressed, was in tears.
I've given birth twice with no pain relief whatsoever and I found labor hurt less than whatever this was.

By the time I got to A&E it subsided within 15 minutes or so after being intense for 2 and a bit hours. But the areas where the pain was feel kind of sore.
White blood cell count raised. Everything else normal. No UTI or anything of that sort.

Drs seemed to focus on my appendix but there isn't really any significant pain other than some soreness when pressed. I now have a mild ache around my lower abdomen and lower back on the right but nothing debilitating.

Will be having an x-ray tomorrow to see what it could be.

Has anyone ever had anything similar?

Gallbladder?

WiddlinDiddlin · 25/10/2021 20:53

Slightly weird gallstone/pancreas (the pancreas can get pretty pissed off if the gallbladder is upset) issues.. that tends to show up as pain under the ribs and radiating around the right hand side into the back and up behind the shoulder blade sometimes.

Tis nasty, properly agonising, makes you grunt and swear sort of pain.

delilabell · 25/10/2021 20:53

Sounds v much like gallbladder.
Hope you're ok

Loubiemoo · 25/10/2021 21:05

Diverticulitis?
Pancreatitis?
Gall stones?

dustyflipflop · 26/10/2021 09:32

Thanks, maybe the gallbladder is a good shout.
Still waiting for x-ray.

Interesting if it is gallbladder since everyone has been so focused on the appendix.

Perhaps it feels like they’re focussed on appendix because the risk of an appendix bursting can get serious very quickly? Are they doing an ultrasound as well as X-ray? I had an ultrasound with suspected appendicitis.

monkeysox · 26/10/2021 09:37

Could be appendix if bowel is twisted . Hope you're better soon Flowers

Spidey66 · 26/10/2021 09:49

Sounds like gallbladder, but that is more to the right or sometimes central.

Spidey66 · 26/10/2021 09:54

I had my gallbladder out in August and the description sounded much like yours except for the site of the pain. It would happen every few weeks for a couple of hours at a time. Really intense, off the scale pain.

If it is gallstones, it's recommended you stick to a low fat diet. The op is fine, it's usually keyhole, a bit rough for a few days but after about 5-7 days I wads fine.

dustyflipflop · 26/10/2021 09:57

I have a friend who is due to have her gallbladder taken out - certain foods trigger painful attacks.
Which is making me think how I've had an awful weekend food wise - celebrating a couple of things and eating all sorts of processed foods along with a few glasses of cava and so on which - if it is the gallbladder - would explain the awful way I felt the morning after?

OP posts:
Spidey66 · 26/10/2021 11:23

I don't think alcohols a trigger. It's usually fatty foods, because the gallbladder goes into action after eating fatty foods to produce bile to break it down. I'm not explaining it well but understand it better!

Spidey66 · 26/10/2021 11:28

But yes fatty processed foods are a trigger.

It's easily diagnosed but not by x-ray. An ultrasound and bloods are the way to go. You said your white blood cells are raised which indicates an infection somewhere, could be inflamed gallbladder. Often LFTs are also raised and also another one....can't remember the name but something about CProtein which means inflammation somewhere.

Ilovechristmasasmuchasiloveyou · 26/10/2021 11:49

Good luck with your x ray. Hopefully they give you an ultra sound though as you can see the gallbladder/liver & pancreas better on there.

helpfulperson · 26/10/2021 11:55

Have they tested for UTI? it sounds like when I had one including the residual soreness.

rebeccachoc · 26/10/2021 12:47

Sounds a bit like my ruptured ovarian cyst, but pain was a bit lower down. Also I have chronic functional bowel pain, which basically means I have horrific pain now and again for no known reason, I flipping hope it's not that for you as its awful.

PlateSpinnerExtraordinaire · 26/10/2021 12:51

God only knows why you are having an X-ray.
Singularly useless investigation for abdominal pain.
Doesn't show gallstones (or only 80% of them), ovarian cysts or appendicitis.

Mossstitch · 26/10/2021 13:52

Biliary colic, contrary to usual fatty foods causing gall bladder pain I got this each time I went on very low fat diet. Took a few attacks before I twigged. Now I'm frightened to diet again even though I need to lose weight. Worse pain than childbirth!

dustyflipflop · 26/10/2021 17:38

Hi everyone! So sorry for the massive mix up on my part I must've still been in a state when writing these. It's an ultrasound I'm due for Blush no idea why I had x-ray in my head.

Well nothing was happening so I chased them up myself. Turns out they issued me with two numbers of some sort? by accident and they booked me in for one today but under the wrong number so no one picked it up on the system. They also had my surname misspelled.
I've been booked in for an ultrasound tomorrow morning so fingers crossed that one will go ahead.
They also called my next of kin who is my partner (clearly filled as such on the form) and kept asking if he's my father Grin

I'm not in pain today but still feeling rather...tender? around my tummy area.

Appendicitis ? Mine ‘rumbled’ for a bit beforehand a couple of times, which is in fact a thing. It can have a bit of a flare before it gets full on inflamed. I didn’t know this until about the 3rd episode, when it was about the explode.

I often felt hungover after gallstones attack....tired and queasy.
dustyflipflop · 26/10/2021 19:50

@Spidey66 I've honestly felt ok since yesterday morning. Had a huge headache last night but that's probably because I've not been allowed to eat or drink all day and didn't get to until around 7pm.
I think I kept writing x-ray because that's the department they want me to go to Blush

Still feeling a bit tender and like I can't just run up the stairs chasing the DCs for example. But other than that I'm ok at the moment.

Hope you get some answers today Flowers

dustyflipflop · 27/10/2021 17:56

Thanks @monkeysox
Unfortunately they found nothing out of the ordinary.
They did an ultrasound on my abdomen and sides and couldn't find any potential causes of the pain. I was sent home pretty much immediately.

Still none the wiser.
Thank you for all the suggestions and advice though.

monkeysox · 27/10/2021 19:48

@dustyflipflop get well soon

Spidey66 · 27/10/2021 20:14

Oh I'm sorry you're no clearer finding the cause. Once I realised there was an issue and pattern with my gut, i believed it was my gallbladder, and was relieved it was diagnosed as such as then there's a clear plan/pathway.
