So if the Minimum Wage increases...

missbunnyrabbit · 25/10/2021 20:20

My own wage in a public sector job seems lower than ever. The article I read suggests the public sector pay freezes will end, but I doubt we'll get such a large pay rise!

Aibu to feel like packing my teacher job in to go and work a minimum wage job instead?

I haven't done the maths myself, but experienced colleagues of mine admitted they have and it's less.

So you don’t even know if this is relevant to you? Surely with all that super duper training, you can do the maths yourself?

Thehop · 25/10/2021 23:36

@Willow231 completely agree, I’ve just left private nursery after 20 years for the same reasons. I was a baby room manager with an early years degree on nmw plus 5p an hour and the stress/unpaid overtime expected was unreal.

@Freddiefox couldn’t agree with you more that the funded hours proved to be childcare provision cancer.

missbunnyrabbit · 25/10/2021 23:36

*half term not bank holiday

I'm so frazzled and tired I barely know what day it isGrin

OP- you are showing professional immaturity. Do you know how job evaluations and salaries are decided??
Being ‘educated’ only plays a small part in it.
For example- recruitment consultants can easily be paid way over 100k. They don’t need ANY qualifications- they need other sorts of skills.
There are also loads of technical jobs people get without having a degree. Salary is based on much more than a professional qualification.

LittleBearPad · 25/10/2021 23:37
@littleBearPad Except if you add up all the hours we work, it's definitely not far off. I haven't done the maths myself, but experienced colleagues of mine admitted they have and it's less. I'll trust them.
🤣

Explosivefarts · 25/10/2021 23:37

I see frommpost history OP had similar views on furlough.

TravellingSpoon · 25/10/2021 23:38

@Kimjonghealthy

I take it you're a carer? The way carers are treated is honestly disgusting.

Crap wages, and they wonder why they can't keep staff. I appreciate you and everyone who works in this sector. But look after yourself. It's a tough gig x

Thank you. Yes I am, although I am moving on soon to another role which is social care based but in the community.

I never have because I like to pretend otherwise! No one wants to think they are working for less than nmw. :)

If housing costs weren't such a fucking criminal joke then wages wouldn't be such a problem plus every food and bill going up.

Council housing rent is much cheaper than private, lower all private to meet council. Don't let people pay others mortgages yet pay much less on their own mortgage.

I work in total corporate bullshit and no way work as hard as care workers or amazon shift workers etc.

There is zero fairness or logic around any living pay or costs.

@TravellingSpoon

Glad to hear it. I hope this gives you a better work life balance. We couldn't do our jobs without you x

Add the benefits in OP.

Clocktopus · 25/10/2021 23:42

OK, this shows you have no idea what you are talking about. Teachers don't work at weekends? In what world? :D and yes, we also work through holidays. I have worked today, first day of the bank holiday, and have much to do for the rest of the week. It's not a 9-3 job and we work weekend and holidays.

The point is that you're not contracted to work at weekends and the work you do isn't in school, teaching. You don't work the entire school holidays. No one is telling you that you must be at work until 10pm on Christmas Eve and that you're expected back at 3am on Boxing Day. No one is going to punish you for going off sick by taking away all your shifts (and therefore your income) for the next week. No one is going to ring you on your only day off and say that so-and-so has rang in sick so you need to cover. No one is ringing you at 2am because you're a keyholder (for no additional pay) and the shop alarm is going off.

PizzaCrust · 25/10/2021 23:42

Oh, as a heads up for @missbunnyrabbit, if retail is so easy you’ll be able to walk into a seasonal job starting soon and then go from there. Might as well pack in teaching and just go stack some shelves for 42.5h a week. And as an example rota, how does this suit you?

Monday- 6am-3pm
Tuesday- 3pm-12am
Wednesday- 6am-3pm
Thursday- off
Friday- 9am-6pm
Saturday- 3pm-12pm
Sunday- 6am-3pm

Two days off together? No chance!
Working back to backs? Yep. Oh, and they’ll request you sign a waiver so you can work on that little sleep. You don’t have to sign it, but you’ll not last long, probably. So you’ll sign it and get used to working on 4 hours sleep pretty soon.

Oh, and you think those 3pm-12am shifts are okay at first. You can have a lie in. Until you realise that you can’t do a single thing on those days other than work. Can’t get up too early or you’ll crash and burn by 8pm. Get up any later, and there’s no point doing anything. And you’ll likely have an earlier shift the next day so you’ll have to keep that in mind, too.

Oh, and what about the Christmas rota? You’ll likely work Christmas Eve morning or evening. Hopefully off Christmas Day (maybe not, though). Can’t drink because you’ll be back in for Boxing Day sales. Same story for New Years- you might be off one or the other but it’ll make it impossible for you to make plans.

MissM2912 · 25/10/2021 23:42

I thought teachers weren’t deemed to be keyworkers during lock down 🤔

missbunnyrabbit · 25/10/2021 23:43

@Explosivefarts
Why on earth are you bringing up past posts and derailing the thread? Do you think you're the mumsnet police? Can we not just have a debate? And accept that people have different opinions to yourself?

OP posts:
PizzaCrust · 25/10/2021 23:43

*Correction on the above rota, you should be off on Sunday. But the rota might end up changing anyway. You’ll find out a day or two before your shift.

TableFlowerss · 25/10/2021 23:44

Many people on MMW get too ups so all that will happen is they’ll lose some if their top ups in the next hand as they’ll be over the threshold to receive them.

It’s employers who foot the bill so the government save money

This was always going to happen after furlough. Folk that were screaming for prolonged lockdowns etc…. Did they honestly think it wouldn’t come at a cost?…..

Clocktopus · 25/10/2021 23:45

And as an example rota, how does this suit you?

Don't forget the good old split shift! 11am to 4pm then back from 7pm to 12am.

MissM2912 · 25/10/2021 23:45

The previous furlough post makes OP sound about 16

mumwon · 25/10/2021 23:46

isn't living wage advisory & not compulsory like minimum wage?

PizzaCrust · 25/10/2021 23:47

@Explosivefarts

Sorry, but I think those furloughed SHOULD be the ones to pay most of it back. Not massive amounts, not all of it. But it infuriates me to think of people (cough ex-boyfriend cough) sitting at home, binge watching TV, whilst still getting 80%, while key workers like me are slogging our guts out and putting ourselves at risk of covid.

I don't want to hear 'we're all in this together'. No, I'm sorry, it's been MUCH easier for those sat at home than it has for us still working, still at risk, and doing more than our usual workload.

It's not their fault that they're furloughed. But life's not fair. I have nothing but envy for those sitting at home who work for big chains and are still guaranteed a job when they go back

That explains why the new boyfriend is keeping his mouth shut on this one, then.

And wasn’t a lot of teaching done over Zoom? I wouldn’t know, I was working in a store face to face, long before masks and screens were a thing. Dealing with people going mad for toilet roll and bleach. Queues out the door. Overnight shifts frantically restocking the shelves hoping the next day wasn’t going to be akin to a warzone again. (Not literally, obviously. Huge respect to those in the armed forces).
