Would you store duvets in the loft?

We are currently doing my toddlers room, so she can move out of our bedroom into a bed in her own space. I said to MIL it needs a wardrobe and filling/ painting. She says well a toddler doesn't need a wardrobe, just a rail. Well, we have a rail in there now and everything is dusty and I can't put or hide anything away to be stored. I said I want to put duvets and the spare pillows and things in the top of a fitted wardrobe, plus spare coats and jackets. Plus of course some of toddlers bits. MIL says people store that stuff in the loft. Do they?

Firstly our loft isn't boarded and has mega thick insulation which gets into everything, plus no ladder, so to sort this I'd not be saving any money v getting a wardrobe. I feel normal people have wardrobes and aibu to want a wardrobe not the hassle of scaling the loft for duvets ? I don't normally suffer MIL rage, but this has annoyed me big time.

We always stored stuff in the loft in big plastic labelled storage bins, but ours was boarded with a ladder. Now we actually store stuff in our cellar just because it has a proper staircase. Anything more readily needed is in the guest room wardrobe or airing cupboard.

But I don't know why you're upset/annoyed...just smile, nod and do what you want to do?

HeronLanyon · 25/10/2021 06:43

I would never store clothes or bedding (other than sleeping bags possibly) in a loft. But it all depends. If youve got a lit, easy access, boarded loft (more like an actual room) then perhaps.

I’ve more usually lived with dusty dirty hot/cold difficult access lofts.
Btw after a lifetime of ‘vaccum’ bags I’ve never come across a brand which works for more than about a year.
Just get what you want and what works for your set up.

GoodnightGrandma · 25/10/2021 06:50

Ignore your MIL and do what you want.

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 25/10/2021 06:52

You are an adult.

Buy a wardrobe!!!!

Duvets you intend to ever use again in attics is a bit gross imho

Choccorocco · 25/10/2021 06:58

I don’t understand why you are so annoyed with your MIL unless she made the suggestions in some kind of strange and horrible way. Surely it’s perfectly normal to have a rail for a toddler (my teenager still has a rail) and it’s fine for duvets to go in the loft? It might not be what you want now so just change it but the rage seems unnecessary.

BogRollBOGOF · 25/10/2021 06:59

Get the wardrobe. Unless you're living in MiL's house, it's not her business.

I wouldn't store a duvet in the loft. It can get musty up there. I've stored out-grown childrens clothes but they wash up much better. Sleeping bags too, they're small enough to go through the washer and they get used in airy tents. That's different to risking your usual bedding.

I suppose a duvet could be OK if it was very well wrapped.

MrsDThomas · 25/10/2021 06:59

Of course everyone needs a wardrobe! Buy one now as your kids needs one.

Why on earth are you involving your MIL in such a trivial matter?

eurochick · 25/10/2021 07:02

I'm not sure why any of this is MIL's business.

Yes we store duvets in the loft. The last two houses have had very clean boarded lofts. We've just moved and as we were putting stuff in the loft found evidence of mice. We've had the pest controller round but now I'm thinking we might find a dead mouse next time we unroll our summer weight duvets. So I guess it depends on the loft.

purplesequins · 25/10/2021 07:03

we store spare bedding in the attic.
but it's boarded up and airy.
and it's in stored in plastic containers.

your solution to get a wardrobe though is very sensible, as you want to get one anyway.

have a look at 'really useful' storage bixes or vacuum sealed bags for storing bedding though.

Jengnr · 25/10/2021 07:04

Well, yes I do. But you want a wardrobe so what I think isn’t relevant at all.

Werehamster · 25/10/2021 07:13

I love my parents dearly, but my mum is so contrary about everything. Is your MIL like this by any chance?

If I say I'm getting a wardrobe, she'll say it's a waste of money and I should get a rail. If I say I'm getting a rail, she'll say that's wrong you need a proper wardrobe. Drives me crazy, but I just do as I like.

I wouldn't personally store duvets in the loft. I use vacuum bags and store them in a cupboard.

TheWitchersWife · 25/10/2021 07:21

I also don't see what it has to do with with MIL.
You want a wardrobe, get a wardrobe.
Surely there's no discussion.
You can't be annoyed with MIL for expressing her opinion, be annoyed with yourself for arranging your house how your MIL would like it, rather than how you would like it.
There's lots of things my MIL would probably like me to do, I listen politely and then to whatever I want as I'm an adult with my own mind.

IsleofRum · 25/10/2021 07:23

If kept in bags, keep enough of the top open to allow air in otherwise will mould terribly.

Wedowonder · 25/10/2021 08:04

If it's in a zip lock storage bag then yes sure, we do that already.

Wedowonder · 25/10/2021 08:04

*by zip lock, I mean the vaccume pack ones.

waitingpatientlyforspring · 25/10/2021 08:10

We do both. Those vacuum storage bags are good. Seasonal clothes are stored in suitcase in attic.

You are not unreasonable to want a wardrobe- although neither of my kids have one or would use one. They prefer drawers and shelves.

Chunkymenrock · 25/10/2021 08:11

No way. Everything stored in the loft takes on a terrible, musty smell.

Chunkymenrock · 25/10/2021 08:12

If you get a wardrobe, please make sure it's attached to the wall with a strap to prevent it tipping over.

GinIronic · 25/10/2021 08:15

Why are you listening to your MIL? As pp, you want a wardrobe - get one and use the top for duvet storage in a vacuum bag.

EatYourVegetables · 25/10/2021 08:34

I wouldn’t (except maybe the ones we never use and that in vacuum bags), but then I also would not feel the need to justify my home organising decisions to MIL.

The “rail only” is nonsense btw (but again you don’t have to justify that to me or the MIL or the MN crowd).

AlbertBridge · 25/10/2021 08:39

I think you should just nod and say, "That's interesting," to your MIL... then do whatever you want. 😆

Fitted wardrobes will be useful now and in the future. Rails get super dusty and look messy.

I think buying "adult" furniture as soon as possible is a good idea. The few bits of kids furniture we bought our DC looked cute for a couple of years but was soon outgrown.

Just do what you want.

Oh and storing stuff in your loft is bad Feng Shui.

knittingaddict · 25/10/2021 08:53

No I wouldn't store duvets in the loft.

TimeForTeaAndG · 25/10/2021 09:35

@Chunkymenrock

If you get a wardrobe, please make sure it's attached to the wall with a strap to prevent it tipping over.
Or get the really tall ones if you've got a normal 8ft ceiling, our wardrobes couldn't fall over even if they wanted to.

It is this yes. Just that MIL says I'm crazy wanting a wardrobe when it's a completely standard thing to have in a bedroom

clockover · 25/10/2021 09:42

I don't have any duvets to store, so no. We are quite minimal when it comes to things like that. We don't need a duvet in the loft. Why do you?
