Would you store duvets in the loft?

We are currently doing my toddlers room, so she can move out of our bedroom into a bed in her own space. I said to MIL it needs a wardrobe and filling/ painting. She says well a toddler doesn't need a wardrobe, just a rail. Well, we have a rail in there now and everything is dusty and I can't put or hide anything away to be stored. I said I want to put duvets and the spare pillows and things in the top of a fitted wardrobe, plus spare coats and jackets. Plus of course some of toddlers bits. MIL says people store that stuff in the loft. Do they?

Firstly our loft isn't boarded and has mega thick insulation which gets into everything, plus no ladder, so to sort this I'd not be saving any money v getting a wardrobe. I feel normal people have wardrobes and aibu to want a wardrobe not the hassle of scaling the loft for duvets ? I don't normally suffer MIL rage, but this has annoyed me big time.

I wouldn't store clothing in my loft as it's too humid and it would go rotten.

Stompythedinosaur · 24/10/2021 23:44

I store duvets in the loft (in storage bags), but ours is boarded.

Even if you store things in the baby's room for a while, you will presumably have to find another space for them when your dc is older and needs to use their own furniture.

Gingerish · 24/10/2021 23:45

I do, wrapped in bags

PickAChew · 24/10/2021 23:45

Just get a wardrobe. If you get ikea pax, you can have a load of shelves in it, as well as a rail.

My loft isn't big enough for a shoebox. We have a little eaves storage, but it gets damp, in winter.

Taoneusa · 24/10/2021 23:47

Not very accessible if stored in an unboarded loft, perhaps. You would want to put them in vacuum sealed bags with moth balls.

Much easier to have the storage you mentioned!

foxgoosefinch · 24/10/2021 23:47

I wouldn’t - our loft is heavily insulated, which means it’s actually v cold and damp half the year. I’d be worried fabric would go musty/mouldy. They are a pain to store, though - I put my summer ones in vacuum bags but it’s a pain storing the thick winter ones!

LittleDandelionClock · 24/10/2021 23:47

@sleepingrabbits You could put duvets in the loft, but put them in vacuum bags. Stop them going to shit, AND they make them much smaller, so they save space.

If you want a wardrobe what does it matter what mil thinks?

I think younstore stuff in the loft that you need at most once a year, stuff like duvets and pillows may be needed more frequently, it is a palaver for most to go in the loft.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/10/2021 23:50

I wouldn't put duvets up there because it would be a pain to get them back when I wanted them and I'd be concerned that they'd get damp or dusty unless encased in good quality (expensive) sealed bags.

Just get a wardrobe if that's the best solution for your space. Wardrobes are great for storing all sorts of non clothing items in and I second the PAX suggestion.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/10/2021 23:56

I was going to say vacuum bags too

pandora206 · 25/10/2021 00:21

I store duvets in the loft in dry cleaners' storage bags. They are swapped over every six months so not there indefinitely. They are stored clean and aired before use. We've never had a problem with damp.

Our loft is boarded, which has been very useful when storing Xmas decorations, suitcases, camping gear, etc.

FangsForTheMemory · 25/10/2021 00:26

It’s none of your MIL’s business. I don’t store anything in my loft because I haven’t got any way of getting up there.

StTherese · 25/10/2021 00:32

Get your loft boarded and get a pull down loft ladder. Loads of storage space that’s easy to access.
Duvets are fine stored in vacuum bags, but give them a good airing before you use them again.

TimeForTeaAndG · 25/10/2021 00:35

They don't stay toddlers forever. Get a wardrobe! We got DD an IKEA wardrobe and put in drawers and one mirrored door (she likes that she can check what she's wearing and how she looks - 8 going on 14).

Do what works for you, OP. MIL doesn't have to like it.

TuftyMarmoset · 25/10/2021 00:47

I agree just get a wardrobe. We too have IKEA pax and you would be able to put a rail at toddler height and then shelves/drawers above as it’s all customisable. I would be concerned about damp and mice in the loft. We keep the spare double duvet and pillows in one of these stored on top of the pax wardrobe.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 25/10/2021 01:03

Imagine they do if they have to. But if you don't why would you?

So your MIL shleps into her loft twice a year with the seasons change does she? Bet my arse she doesn't

user1473878824 · 25/10/2021 01:18

Vacuum bags. But if there’s no ladder how are you even getting anything in or out?

IndecentCakes · 25/10/2021 01:20

No, I'd worry about mold and damp and bugs.

Poppins2016 · 25/10/2021 01:25

I store duvets/seasonally inappropriate clothes in the loft, in sealed vacuum bags.

But it doesn't really matter what other people do. Your possessions, your house, your decision!

I'd get a wardrobe as that is most practical for your purposes and most importantly it's what you want!

fibrecruncher · 25/10/2021 01:53

It doesn't matter what MIL thinks, it's your choice.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 25/10/2021 02:27

Why does your mil get to opine on whether your child has a wardrobe or not? How odd!

GirlWithAGuitar · 25/10/2021 02:34

I don’t understand why mother in law is involved in this ‘decision’. Of course children have wardrobes.

jamandmarmalade · 25/10/2021 03:04

Personally no: risk of mice, mold, damp. Or in our case earlier this year the header tank in the loft burst. You could always put MIL in the loft.

MadeOfStarStuff · 25/10/2021 06:13

Just get a wardrobe! Why does MIL’s opinion override yours about your child’s room?

maofteens · 25/10/2021 06:19

No. I use the space at the top of the wardrobes (built in to ceiling) for things like duvets and suitcases.
