. ok. halloween can be a fantastic time for all people kids and everyone, but am i the only person to think it brings the worst out of people? 2019 before covid i got a taxi to a local pub who were having a halloween party and we almost had a nasty accident as some kids threw something in front of the car. how we didn't have an accident was probably more luck than judgement. to think that a good celebration and fun has become tainted by the actions of a certain group of people?

Anyway, you lot enjoy your Halloweens.

We certainly will Smile

EishetChayil · 27/10/2021 13:45

It's gone a bit feral and OTT.

Having said that, we have an equivalent in my religion, and people tend to go a bit wild.

Offmyfence · 27/10/2021 17:06

@GreenFingersWouldBeHandy

How about surgery to remove the stick from your arse?

No, I think I was defending myself, in fairness.

Anyway, you lot enjoy your Halloweens.

I don't think calling children "brats" is defending yourself!

I think it's nasty, how would you feel if someone referred to women as bitches? Would that be acceptable?

I have no interest in it.
I used to facilitate the DCs going trick or treating when they were younger.
Dd is obsessed with it for some reason! Is at uni and b excited as her good friend is having a party.

Some of these replies 😂

It's fun, the kids like it and no one is forcing you to participate.

mathanxiety · 27/10/2021 19:53

When I say it's a filthy night what I mean is, it's dark, the smell of fire in the air, its normally damp or wet out, the noise of the bangers is unreal and it goes on all night. Awful.

Take away the bangers and you have an average Irish winter night. You might as well say Ireland sucks in winter.

Depending on where you live, you might well have annoying noises going on all night.

mathanxiety · 27/10/2021 19:59

How about totting up how much you've spent on useless plastic tat for one evening this year?

I spent about $10 on little pumpkin shaped buckets for my kids about 20 years ago.

I still decorate my windows with little things they made in school - ghosts, bats, spiders.

Do you decorate your house for Christmas or Easter or any other holiday?

nancybotwinbloom · 27/10/2021 20:29

I love it. The kids love it. I loved it as a kid.

In Liverpool we have mischievous night the night before Halloween. Shops do not generally sell eggs or flour to anyone in there teens.

An imported money-making opportunity, encouraging bad behaviour and waste.

mathanxiety · 27/10/2021 20:46

Imported? Scotland isn't independent yet.

Erm. No.
Zerrin13 · 27/10/2021 22:17

I've always thought it was utter crap. Not remotely interesting at all. My kids loved it though and its my eldest daughters birthday.

upaladderagain · 27/10/2021 22:36

As a Scot, I'm interested to know what Scotland has to do with it?

Welshiefluff · 27/10/2021 22:56

Load of commercial shite and encourages binge eating of junk food. This is coming from somebody who has kids. They are not bothered about going out so we hollow out a pumpkin and make faces, more as something to do rather than for halloween.

I then turn off the door bell chime and turn off as many lights as I can on the day itself and hope the fuckers leave me alone.

Welshiefluff · 27/10/2021 22:57

People walking the streets rather than my children I must add.

Hallowe'en is an ancient tradition in Scotland and Ireland, @upaladderagain.

In Scotland as in Ireland there was a lot of divination of the future, and a belief that spirits roamed the land. Children were disguised as they went from house to house so that the spirits would think they were fairies too. There were also traditions like bobbing for apples, carving turnips, and belief that the separation of this world and the spirit world disappeared on this night. In medieval times, people would traipse from house to house asking for soul cakes in return for prayers for the souls of the dead.

and Wales, also a Celtic nation 😊 In Welsh folklore it was called Nos Galan Gaeaf and marked the last day before Winter.
