To think more women losing their hair these days?

I know this is a weird question..!

I'm noticing it everywhere, small balding spots on tops of women's hair, or their crowns or partings, is this a covid thing or something? I've been experiencing hair loss myself so it could be me reading too much into things, being as paranoid as I am! Is it just me of us this actually happening?

I don't know, mine is still as thick and unruly as ever. I'm on the very edge of full menopause and still no thinning.

happytoday73 · 23/10/2021 17:43

Mine is terribly thin on top. It will only get worse as I hurtle towards 50, despite not being very bothered about my image this makes me sad.

malificent7 · 23/10/2021 17:45

It's an age thing i guess.

TheChip · 23/10/2021 17:46

I'm 34 and my hair is so thin. I cant tie it back otherwise bald patches are clearly visible. If I don't wash it daily, the bald patches start becoming visible even when it's down.
I tried that plantur shampoo? I think that's what it is called. I am sure my hair has got even more thin after using it.

Davros · 23/10/2021 17:46

My two SILs have this and have had for some years now. They're 70+, and I put it down to years and years of colouring, blow drying, straightening and products.

PicsInRed · 23/10/2021 17:47

I remember seeing elderly women with thinned hair when I was a child, however I believe for outings and so on it used to be covered with wigs or millenery hats. Perhaps this is less common these days due to fashion?

AnyFucker · 23/10/2021 17:48

Maybe you are just taking more notice because your concern is heightened?

I have been experiencing hair loss so I find myself subconsciously looking at everyone’s hair when before it wouldn’t have crossed my mind

Vates · 23/10/2021 17:50

It seems to be more age related which I am expecting to deal with soon. I am 36 and mine is still ridiculously thick, frizzy and out of control as ever. Obviously I'd rather the hair than none. Mine just sheds loads and literally breaks hoovers which isn't good either.

Mine got thin at one point and I found it very upsetting but a good hair, nail, skin supplement made a huge difference and my hair has returned to decent thickness.

I don't think you can underestimate the stress many people have been under.

Europilgrim · 23/10/2021 17:53

I think it's just that you're noticing it because you have it (I do too!)

MrsRobbieHart · 23/10/2021 17:54

I’ve always had lovely thick hair but this year I noticed it thinning at the front where my parting is. I reckon it’s from years of that area being tugged into place with a brush, my fingers, blow drying etc. So I’ve changed my parting to the other side now. Give the thinning area a chance to recover.

LittleDandelionClock · 23/10/2021 17:55

Not seen it myself. Sorry @adrianmolesmole to hear of your hair issue. Is there anything you can do or use to thicken it?

MonkeyPuddle · 23/10/2021 17:57

I notice, but only because I have androgenic alopecia and I’m usually eyeing up people hair in a jealous fog.

Mantlemoose · 23/10/2021 17:58

Not noticed anything apart from my DM but she's always had very very fine hair. Tamoxifan made it even worse.

Ozanj · 23/10/2021 18:00

A lot of people have stopped wearing hair extensions / weaves as hairdressers haven’t been open or seeing the numbers of customers they used to. Will probably be resolved next year.

Justcashnosweets · 23/10/2021 18:02

My hair is thinning at my crown and has receded a bit at the front. Its been slowly thinning for years and i'm worried that by the time I'm 50, i'll need to start wearing a wig 😔 I think mine started after I had my daughter 8 years ago, as I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid at my 6 week check. I havn't been to see my GP about it, but given that I'm now 45 and probably in peri menopause, maybe HRT would help. But anyway, I've definitely noticed more women are having the same issues, but it could be that I am actively looking!

madmomma · 23/10/2021 18:03

I definitely have noticed significant hair loss since the pandemic broke. Could be coincidence, age, stress, a post viral thing... 🤷🏼‍♀️ But mine's much thinner.

Mynameismargot · 23/10/2021 18:04

I'm losing hair lately but that is a side effect of a medical problem that I had, I can't say that I have noticed it on anyone else though.

tilder · 23/10/2021 18:10

Mine is much thinner. Noticeably so at the front. Plus hair clips that I used to need are too much now, and I can use much small clips than I used to. When I tie it back, the pony tail is nearly half as thick as it used to be.

I lost a lot a few years ago. Was diagnosed with a scalp condition and had a steroid treatment which stopped the dramatic loss. It's been steadily thinning since.

I suspect it's hormonal now. Depressing really.

I've never coloured my hair, other than henna as a teenager. I don't blow dry and don't use straighteners.

Mimilamore · 23/10/2021 18:11

I have noticed mine thinning steadily over past year. Always a lump of hair to pull out off brush after washing these days. Never gave it a thought before. Special shampoos have not helped at all.
What is the best supplement to take?

Londontown12 · 23/10/2021 18:12

I was saying to my DH my hair feels like it thinning this morning!! I’m 45 on hrt but also on medication for psoriatic arthritis!! I have no idea why thou . Not particularly noticed it on other woman thou I’m thinking covid stress x

MilduraS · 23/10/2021 18:13

My is thin because I have PCOS, as do many of my cousins. I've wondered if it's more common these days. None of the older women in either sides of our families have PCOS or any symptoms to suggest they have undiagnosed PCOS.

Davros · 23/10/2021 18:14

I think not doing these things would make hair healthier.
3scape · 23/10/2021 18:16

Mine isn't as yet but I remember my great nan, both grand and my mum's hair have or did all thin with age. I'm 46. Mum's started to thin about 43 but then her menopause was done by then it could be related?

nokidshere · 23/10/2021 18:16

I've just turned 60 and have noticed that when my hair is wet I can see my scalp which I could never do before. I have very thick curly hair so it's not noticeable when dry thankfully.
