To think more women losing their hair these days?

I know this is a weird question..!

I'm noticing it everywhere, small balding spots on tops of women's hair, or their crowns or partings, is this a covid thing or something? I've been experiencing hair loss myself so it could be me reading too much into things, being as paranoid as I am! Is it just me of us this actually happening?

Same here @saraclara. I didn’t look at my hair for literally a year.

VexedofVirginiaWater · 24/10/2021 16:18

@AnyFucker

Gives the illusion of thicker hair
I must try some - I assumed it was a white powder and would show up like a powdered wig.
Europilgrim · 24/10/2021 16:33

@bluetongue I had the same diagnosis. Do you mind me asking what ferritin level you got to that made a difference?

Dentistlakes · 24/10/2021 16:38

I’m guessing it’s due to hormones and stress. Women are working full time for longer whilst also raising children and often dealing with age parents. IMO menopause is nature’s way of saying slow the fuck down. Modern life doesn’t allow many women that luxury and we are burning out as a result.

Dancingtomusic · 24/10/2021 19:51

Saraclara thats excately how i feel.about washing my hair...i have to build up my courage to do it as so much falls out.

itsnotmeitsu · 24/10/2021 20:51

I've mentioned this earlier on in the thread, but if your hair follicles are still functioning you will hopefully get your old hair back. I went through a period of losing so much hair and it turned out to be because of the stress of my dog having cancer and dying. I thought I was going bald but in the end my hair survived and is probably thicker now than it was. If follicles are dying/dead that's obviously a different thing. Holland and Barrats hair/skin supplements also helped during this time.

Ozanj · 24/10/2021 21:31

@saraclara

People reporting they have tons of hair are deeply unhelpful - would you post on a thread about poverty “oh I have plenty of money”? No you wouldn’t. Please bugger off with your “oh I have so much hair” stories,

Yep. I was one of those people with thick unruly hair. Now I'm not.
I have to steel myself to wash my hair now, and put it off for as long as I can. And when I brush it through I have to not look at the brush. I close my eyes while I pull out the hair and put it in the bin. Pathetic, I know.

I had extremely thick straight hair as a child. Had so many conditions that went undiagnosed that resulted in autoimmune alopecia. I was given such harsh drugs to treat it but in reality a simple thyroid test & being put on the pill for pcos would probably have meant I wouldn’t have developed it in the first place. Anyway the hair grew back - it isn’t thick as it was but it’s now curly and fairly ok - though there are still a few patches.

I really wish I could afford to get a hairdresser to wash and blow-dry it for me every time. But even then, it needs combing/brushing through every day, and even that is becoming stressful for me.

It sounds such a silly thing to care about when people are properly ill with terrible diseases. So it's rare that I get to share these feelings. So thanks for providing somewhere to vent where people will understand, OP.

goinggently · 25/10/2021 05:11

@Piapiano I have Hashimoto's. Hair falling out was the first sign - about 2 years before I went hypothyroid and needed medication .

OP if the GP checks your thyroid, make sure they check for thyroid antibodies too because you can have autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto's) but normal thyroid levels for a long time until your thyroid gets sufficiently damaged to stop working properly.

Good luck OP!

Mine is falling out in clumps since I had my vaccination Shock Any one else ?

TheRealHousewife · 25/10/2021 05:58

@Jaxhog

Mine has been thinning for a while, and the menopause accelerated it. I had a bad experience with the minoxidil, but find that Batiste dry shampoo is a lifesaver!
May I ask what your bad experience was with minoxidil pls? I’ve been considering this as that’s what the nurse recommended for hairloss (but wouldn’t prescribe) and it’s £50.
SummerWillow · 25/10/2021 07:43

I have frontal fibrosing alopecia - a fairly newly identified hair loss type which is scarring, so hair never grows back. Hair gradually recedes from the front and sides. Also involves eyebrow loss and most body hair! They think it may be due to chemicals in face creams and sun creams eg titanium dioxide. It's not clear yet though, may have a hormonal element and there isn't any definite effective treatment.

Oblomov21 · 25/10/2021 07:49

Mine is getting worse. My GP was blasé.

Piapiano · 25/10/2021 12:11

@goinggently I had thyroid antibodies in one blood test and then they repeated it and it was negative the second time, so I'm not sure what's going on. TSH, T3 and T4 all normal at the moment. I might wait a few months and get another test done privately as my GP is uninterested.

goinggently · 25/10/2021 12:33

@Piapiano one to keep an eye on I guess. My antibodies do go up and down. To be honest I'm amazed you got a T3 test out of your GP (unless it was private?). Normally they refuse to test it!

Piapiano · 25/10/2021 12:37

Yes it was private. My GP did refuse to test!

LadySilence · 25/10/2021 12:46

Looked at local trichologists with good reviews but they're all 200 quid plus. Guess I'll just have to go bald!

gogohm · 25/10/2021 13:17

Mine has thinned considerably during my 40's long before covid. I don't colour it or blow dry so it's just one of those things. I suspect it's more that people live longer so you see more older women these days

BigbreastsBiggerbeard · 25/10/2021 19:10

Yes, I've noticed that a fair few women have thinning hair and it's almost certainly because I'm on the lookout for it - makes me feel I'm not so alone. Mine has thinned greatly over the past few years. Been diagnosed with androgenic alopecia and just keep hoping it won't get any worse, though it most likely will. I too use the hair fibres that you sprinkle on. Tried HRT a couple of years ago and my hair fell out even more! Very disappointing.

CoalCraft · 25/10/2021 19:12

Can't say I've noticed this

Pickles89 · 25/10/2021 19:23

The 80's was cruel to hair with all that perming, and the 00's with all that straightening!! Having said that I was only born at the end of the 80s and not cool enough to bother straightening my hair much, but it is horribly thin now I'm in my early 30's. I reckon it's genetic for me as my mum is very patchy in her late 60s, and she's never styled or coloured her hair.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 25/10/2021 19:33

Mine has been thinning since my early 30s. I'm now 40 and have to part my hair on thr side even though my parting naturally falls centrally as with a central parting the light just bounces off my scalp and you can see the outline of my head really clearly through the hair. I've tried so many things but nothing has helped. Nearly spent a fortune on Nioxin but hairdresser told me I'd be wasting my money. Its so depressing. I do have polycystic ovaries so it might be related to that. Wish my hormones would sort themselves out, recently I'm just a bag of hormonal rage.

MissMaple82 · 25/10/2021 19:37

No its an age thing not a bloody covid thing ffs!!

Mossstitch · 25/10/2021 19:46

Mine has been dropping out in handfuls since about 3 months after covid. I'm early 60s so don't think anything to do with menopause that I went through at 49. It's not terribly noticeable (I don't think😬) to anybody else as my hair is quite coarse and holds its shape but if I put back into ponytail it's more of a rats tail 😕 I think covid related personally.

GodspeedJune · 25/10/2021 19:52

Hope I’m not telling anyone to suck eggs but please get blood tests just to rule anything out. When my iron levels drop one of the first signs is my hair going thin. In my early twenties I even developed a bald patch. My ferritin isn’t optimal (around 50 now, ideally should be 70+) but I still see a huge difference compared to when my levels are lower.
