And then wanted to put it straight into DD's mouth !

I'm shocked.

This is not normal and I should get rid, shouldn't I ?

She's doing a few trial days..

That's really weird. I honestly cannot think of any time it would cross a grown adults mind to put a bottle into their mouths. Confused Even if your hands were full you just wouldn't do it. I agree with you that it's a good reason to let her go.

HollowTalk · 22/10/2021 12:50

Yes - if she thinks that's acceptable (bearing in mind she'll be on her best behaviour in front of you) then god knows what she'll do if you're not there.

FuckyNel · 22/10/2021 12:50

I would and have done with my own kids but wouldn't be impressed with anyone else doing it!

VickyEadieofThigh · 22/10/2021 12:51

Definitely NOT good.

As HollowTalk pointed out, if she'd do this in FRONT of you, Heaven only knows what she'd do in your absence. You need to terminate and be honest about why - if she is with an agency, they need to know, too.

CustardySergeant · 22/10/2021 12:52

Yes of course you should "get rid".

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 22/10/2021 12:52

Ummm I’m quite laid back and find that ming

fussytodd · 22/10/2021 12:52

I've never done it either. Even when hands were full. So odd and yes, it made me think it's just a deal breaker. It's just a different standard of hygiene. There's no point in even saying anything or trying to get her to change. It's so below what is acceptable.

OP posts:
VladmirsPoutine · 22/10/2021 12:55

If it were you that would be fine but I agree that's very off, she really shouldn't have done that.

Fleshmechanic · 22/10/2021 12:55

Yeah I did that with my second one time and he got thrush lol. A nanny shouldn't be doing that at all. On top of unhygienic it's lazy too. Just go back for it if you're hands are full. If you're carrying baby then lay them somewhere safe and go back for it.

Fleshmechanic · 22/10/2021 12:56

*oral thrush
Just to be clear 😆

Physnicall · 22/10/2021 12:57

Get rid like she’s just a bit of rubbish?

fussytodd · 22/10/2021 12:57

Shocking

Shock

If it's an agency please let them know.

I don't know where you would go with that though. Suggest she changes to doggy daycare?!

JaneDoe21 · 22/10/2021 12:58

Yep definitely don't give her the job. If she couldn't of carried it why didn't she put down the other things she was holding? Confused

Skeumorph · 22/10/2021 12:58

@Physnicall

Get rid like she’s just a bit of rubbish?
Standard phrase meaning go no further with the appointment/hiring, as is completely obvious.
AlandAnna · 22/10/2021 12:59

That’s a bit odd especially in these covid times…. how old is baby?

There's always one isn't there. OP shouldn't have to teach the nanny basic hygiene!
godmum56 · 22/10/2021 13:11

that's really grim! As the mum then maybe do it but no one else

Asleanna · 22/10/2021 13:34

If she is an otherwise great nanny, I would just explain that you aren't happy with that and please don't do it again. I wouldn't personally do it, but she may have just made a simple human error. If it was a real safety concern for example, unsafe sleeping, unsafe car seat use etc... then fair enough of course.
But only you know if she is a good nanny overall :)
All the best

This is a real safety concern for me though.

Health safety and passing on nasty stuff.

I take my nanny kids to playgroups etc... where toys are chewed by several babies and toddlers do germs are being passed around that way. I agree she shouldn't have done it but I wouldn't say it is a safety concern in the same way as safe sleep for example. Unless of course your baby is never going to mix with other babies.

Yeah to me that's different. It's a normal part of childhood. Exposing my child to the germs in another adults mouth, just doesn't seem right to me.

I think a fair few people will have done this, but you would never know, as you won't see them usually. Just tell the person not to do it, now you have observed it.

This might be of interest OP. If a child is prone to eczema or allergies, a parent sucking a soother to clean it, rather than washing the soother, is now thought to be beneficial.
I know it's a bit different when it's someone other than a parent, but ultimately it probably won't cause harm. Maybe the reverse.
If it's an indicator of a general lack of hygiene (for example in food safety) or carelessness in other areas I'd be more worried though.

RAFHercules · 22/10/2021 14:05

I am the mother of a child who nearly died in intensive care (Thank you Alder Hey) of Herpes simplex. I would be horrified if I saw her doing this.
If she is otherwise a fabulous Nanny, I might consider trying to re-educate her, but dear God, one has to question what level if training she has received so far.
