closing toilet lid before flushing

Big signs up in work loos to close the lid before flushing.
Does everybody do this?
Surely you need to see inside to make sure everything is gone, in which case you'd open, close to flush, open again to check, close again for the next person.
Do people really do this? on public loos? AIBU to not do it?

@MrsDThomas

The lid is there for a reason. Shut it.

And who wants to walk into the bathroom with the lid up? I dont.

Who the hell cares?! I'm disabled so it's just another obstacle if it's down to be honest.
pineapplejuiceisyuck · 22/10/2021 22:55

Those of you who are against it will never put forward a strong argument to make me change my mind. Always put the lid down!

Exposure to dirt is fine but not all. And this is definitely not one of them.

Nayday · 22/10/2021 22:59

Poo is in the air, in the bristle of a loo brush
Poo is in the air, it's even worse than thrush
And I don't know if I'm unreasonable
Don't know if I should LTB
But there's something that I must believe in
Poo particles are unhealthy

Poo is in the air!
Oh oh oh oh
Poo is in the air!

Mumsnet anthem cont.

This is what I have never understood in some public toilets(GP surgery, coffee shop for example) they have no lid on the toilet 😱 okay the one I am thinking about in surgery was in the disabled toilet. But the coffee shop ones etc 🤢

Yes where there is a lid, including at home etc, I put it down, flush wait for it to finish and check it is clean, then wash my hands. That's what I hate about public looks like in shopping centres etc. Where you have to do whatever you went in to do, in the cubicle, then pick up your bags etc to go out to sink, and you've touched everything 🥴

The toilets in my office building don’t have lids. If it was that bad it would be a h&s requirement in any public toilet.

But I do close the lid at home. Mainly because my bathroom cabinet is directly above the toilet and I got sick of people dropping things down there.

Notdoingthis · 24/10/2021 09:28

So all that spray is on the inside of the lid then? Do you wipe the lid after every use? Do you expect your visitors to? And at work? Or does it just hang around on the inside of the lid all day?

Presumably people don't lick the lid and clean it every now and again. And wash their hands after touching it..

I'm interested in what toilets you have that cause shit spray storms when you flush. This feels like a tenuous hypothesis rather than evidence driven. I've survived my whole life not closing the lid so I can't believe there's much truth in this "best practice".

I'm pretty sure you can find the studies that have been done in the past if you have a look. I didn't imagine watching one.

If you're bothered like.

WhiskyXray · 24/10/2021 13:19

I can't remember the last time I had to use a public loo (I'd rather risk death by dehydration than drink in public and risk needing to), but in theory I would close the lid. I don't need a full-body bidet action from the droplets. [boak]

bungaloid · 24/10/2021 16:15

Well the first "study" I found on Google was photos from Harpic of all people. They also managed to get the idea in that as well as closing the lid you should definitely use a good limescale remover. What's the protocol if you enjoy your partner taking a dump on you during sex, toilet lid up or down in this scenario? Or does it no longer matter? Halo

Lockheart · 24/10/2021 16:19

In the vast majority of cases whether the lid is up or down will have zero impact on your life. I've lived in a house with a small bathroom and no lid on the toilet seat so clearly my toothbrush must have been covered, and yet somehow I'm still alive and have never suffered from dysentery.

This is a really weird argument for keeping the lid up. ‘Well, it doesn’t do poo fetishists any harm to shit over each other so why worry about what germs might come out of your toilet when you flush.” 😂
