closing toilet lid before flushing

Big signs up in work loos to close the lid before flushing.
Does everybody do this?
Surely you need to see inside to make sure everything is gone, in which case you'd open, close to flush, open again to check, close again for the next person.
Do people really do this? on public loos? AIBU to not do it?

Yes, always close the lid, I don’t want any spray in my face thank you, especially in public toilets where thousands of people shit. It’s really not a hardship to check if what you’ve done has flushed.

FreeBritnee · 22/10/2021 12:44

I do this but I didn’t used to 🥴

rslsys · 22/10/2021 12:45

Unless the lid is hermetically sealed, it turns the toilet into a giant aerosol with the gaps between the lid and seat, seat and pan. Can't win either way.

SunsetStyle · 22/10/2021 12:46

The ones at work don't have lids.
I can't get to exercised about it to be honest.
There are gaps at the side even when the lid's closed on most toilets anyway so it would potentially spray out sideways at knee level at an even greater velocity.

Watch this, that's why you need to close the lid!

[/quote] It would be interesting to see the test repeated with the lid closed. Entertaining vid though, I liked the humour Smile
daimbarsatemydogsbone · 22/10/2021 12:52

@garlicandsapphires

ARE you basically spraying wee and shit in the air though?
Apparently. It's a miracle I have lived 59 years really.
brokenbiscuitsx · 22/10/2021 12:52

@grey12

You should because it sprays...... Confused but to be VERY honest with you, in public toilets I avoid touching the lid......
Yes I’d actively avoid a loo with the lid shut. Like hell am I peeking in there! 😂
Oldenoughtobedead · 22/10/2021 12:53

I hate people not closing the loo lid before flushing when they use my loo for the reasons already stated.

It’s also why I never understand the argument about loo seat up or down because the lid should always be closed so the seat will always be down between users.

LoislovesStewie · 22/10/2021 13:03

As others have said, not closing the lid sends minute particles of whatever is in the lavatory upwards and outwards. Tests on toothbrushes left on the wash hand basin while the lid is up and toilet flushed show that you could be cleaning your teeth with urine/poo. So, yes please close the lid.

SunsetStyle · 22/10/2021 13:05

I've survived a similar length of time @daimbarsatemydogsbone 🤣

loudbatperson · 22/10/2021 13:11

Always close the lid while flushing. The spray when flushing travels much further than you expect.

GnomeDePlume · 22/10/2021 13:15

I thought the whole bug plume thing was debunked on Mythbusters. The only time it matters is if the person using the toilet is unwell.

SunsetStyle · 22/10/2021 13:16

And yet, miraculously, we survive 😆 Toothbrushes are grim anyway if you think about it. Festering all day after being in your mouth. Not many things we'd trustingly stick in our mouths after barely a rinse, but with toothbrushes we don't bat an eyelid. Someone will be along in a minute to remind me that soaking them in bleach all day is the only way, or possibly never use the same toothbrush twice....?
DappledThings · 22/10/2021 13:20

Minute particles of poo in the air is yet another thing I can't be arsed thinking about.

I couldn't care less if anyone closes the lid or not to flush. I do mind though if they leave it closed. A closed lid always makes me think there's a disgusting mess beneath that someone couldn't be bothered to clear up. Given a choice of cubicles I will usually skip those with closed lids so I don't have to investigate.

HowDareYouStealThatCar · 22/10/2021 13:24

For the last time, urine is NOT sterile - this is a myth!!
I always close the lid at home as I don't want poo particles on my toothbrush and towels but probably wouldn't bother in a public loo - where does it really have to go except for the cubicle to walls? The only issue would be the door lock but one would hope you'd be wash your hands anyway after touching that...

Thank flip for that I was thinking I was the only normal person posting in the world of daft germophobes.

It really is over the top all this bollocks.

Hoppinggreen · 22/10/2021 13:28

We recently had a new ensuite and in order to reach the flush button you have to shut the lid

MrsRobbieHart · 22/10/2021 13:30

I always do. Who would want to be sprayed in other peoples bodily fluids from a public toilet?

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 22/10/2021 13:31

Yep me too - how on earth have I survived? Oh hang on, I know this one - because it's fucking ridiculous bollocks that people with way too much spare time worry about - and then post threads on here every 24 minutes -

LadyJaye · 22/10/2021 13:32

Christ, yes.

Who doesn't do this?

(And in terms of using your hands to open/close - surely you open to have a wee or whatever, wee or whatever, then close, then wash your hands anyway. Please tell me this isn't just me.)
