To put the heating on

Nothing too dramatic over here 😂 just curious if anyone has put their heating on yet. Dunno why I’m seeking ‘approval’! We are all wearing jumpers but still cold!

I am so jealous hearing of these houses still sitting upwards of 15 degrees! We've had ours on for a month now. We live in the Highlands though and it's gotten pretty nippy. We were out for the day yesterday and the house dropped to 10.7! Shock

TuftyMarmoset · 22/10/2021 11:51

Ours is a dachshund too @Mamamamasaurus!

@KingsleyShacklebolt surely it is the indoor and not outdoor temperature which is relevant. I have a friend who has never used her heating because she’s in a modern flat which to date has stayed warm regardless of how cold it has got outside. On the flip side she did have to invest in an air conditioning unit.

Thefaceofboe · 22/10/2021 11:53

Mines been on since start of September which if when I class summer as officially being over and don’t feel guilty Grin

KingsleyShacklebolt · 22/10/2021 11:54

Well temperature in general then.

There is no logic sitting in your house freezing in jumpers and socks and whatever because you have made up a RULE that the heating doesn't go on until November.

1Dandelion1 · 22/10/2021 11:58

Not put our heating on yet, but we are on the south coast and last year we replaced door seals, fitted draft excluders etc and got interlined curtains which make a difference.

doublemonkey · 22/10/2021 11:59

@DuvetDayIsEveryDay

Nope. Still sleeping under a sheet with the windows open..
Ya better change your username to SheetDayIsEveryDay then.

I'm in all day, the thermostat is set to 18. If the temperature drops below that, the heating comes on, no matter whether it's August or January - that's the lowest temperature I can live with. Sometimes I'll turn it up a little in the evenings when I'm not moving about so much, but usually I'll just get a blanket to snuggle up in.

samesign · 22/10/2021 12:09

Mines been on end of August, depends on the size and age of house.

Lynne1Cat · 22/10/2021 12:18

The heating in my house has been on for about 2 months. I'm at home all the time now (recovering from being ill) and I'm not sitting here being cold. The cat loves it too Grin

flashpaper · 22/10/2021 12:19

I've just turned mine on today because our house was down to 15°c which I decided was too cold for me. We haven't had it on because we are worried about gas prices but I haven't used the washing machine today so I can justify it a little.

SylvanasWindrunner · 22/10/2021 12:25

Ours just comes on if the temperature in the house drops below a certain number, so no ceremonial switching on! We usually don't notice the first time it goes on as it's usually very early hours of the morning.

chipshopElvis · 22/10/2021 12:26

I put it on for 30 mins this morning to take the chill off but it does feel like giving in!

80sMum · 22/10/2021 12:30

I try to avoid using the central heating if I can. We're lucky enough to have a wood-burner, so on colder evenings we can light it and be nice and warm.
We only tend to turn the heating on when we have visitors coming, who might think it odd that they need to put a coat on when leaving the living room!
We turn it all off as soon as they've gone!

ThePoliceOfficer · 22/10/2021 12:32

I’ve put it on. The thermostat said 14.2 so I’ll keep it on for a bit. Can’t wait to get a smart meter so I can keep a better eye on the cost!

It's unusually warm here this autumn but I gave in at the beginning of October when the temperature dropped. Couldn't hold out any longer

Sweettea1 · 22/10/2021 12:44

It's bloody freezing that said I wont put heating on its on a timer and will come on at 2.30 so will be warm for dc coming bk from school stays on till 6.30 then comes on in morning at 6 till 9. Don't want it on more than that as my bills where high enough without this price rise so God knows what it will be now.

Peace43 · 22/10/2021 12:48

My thermostat turns heating on once we drop below 19oC and day of the year (between 6am and 10pm). It’s been on a few mornings recently.

Sprostongreen21 · 22/10/2021 12:48

Mines on a smart thermostat and clicks on at 18/18.5 In the day and off at night ( a degree or two higher when it’s colder!) It’s now clicking on daily. Mostly an hour two a day. We’ve had a mild October so for a good few days it wasn’t on at all. I don’t like high heating it’s too stuffy but I won’t be cold either.

If the house feels chilly or washing isn’t drying I boost it a bit higher for a short time.

Burnt0utMum · 22/10/2021 12:53

We haven't used the heating yet. I'm WFH so worried about the cost if it's on a lot. I've had the electric stove on here and there when I feel really cold but try to use jumpers and blankets as much as possible. We live in a Victorian terrace but have had new windows and doors done in the last year so it mostly stays warm.

anonymousanne · 22/10/2021 13:01

Can't stand feeling cold. Grew up in a freezing cold house, single glazing, no CH and two condemned fires. Blowing smoke from our mouths whilst in the house! I put the thermostat on 20 a few weeks back and it stays on 20 day and night until the better weather. I have a baby and a toddler who won't use sleeping sacks and roll from under the covers so it needs to be warm on a night too. It hasn't really been clicking on during the day yet, just during the night and early morning. Suppose it goes back to the debate of more cost effective to turn it on/off or leave the house warm and it tops it up. Never have found a conclusive answer

skybluee · 22/10/2021 13:06

I feel incredibly, incredibly lucky that it doesn't drop in terms of temperature very much here inside. This morning when I woke up, after the heating being off since the evening, it was 21.5C. I wouldn't cope in somewhere that dropped to 10C!

Robostripes · 22/10/2021 13:34

I am one of those people who likes to hold out for as long as possible before switching ours on but this year I haven’t even felt the need to even think about putting it on yet - it’s been incredibly mild in the south east. I’ve only just started putting a dressing gown and slippers on in the mornings and evenings (PJs and barefoot fine until a week or so ago) and I don’t even need to wear a jumper indoors all the time yet. We do live in a well insulated new build.

Last winter when I was working from home for the whole winter and didn’t want to see our gas bill go through the roof, my rule of thumb was I’d turn the thermostat up when my nose started to feel cold. Sitting still at a desk I always feel the cold so my strategies for that are blanket on my lap and a hot water bottle to cuddle!

maofteens · 23/10/2021 00:09

Put in on fir the first time last week, but this week quite warm so off - it's temp controlled so only goes on when it drops below a certain level. I've still got my bedroom window open.

earsup · 23/10/2021 00:19

here just a few hours in evening....gets a bit damp and cold now..lucky we did a two year price fix so ok until sept 2023....

Solina · 23/10/2021 00:33

Ours is technically always on as it just comes on when it drops below a certain temp and then turns off when it hits that target. But I think it did that for the first time at some point in September. The house is well insulated and the boiler is efficient as it's new so heating this house is actually pretty cheap.
