Party bags dillema

Windymiller123 · 21/10/2021 17:44

Sorry, not sure where to post this but I need some advice re party bags for my 4 yo b-day party.

Her b-day is two days before Halloween and I was wandering around the shops today and thought maybe I can get the kids Halloween buckets instead of regular party bags and fill them with (healthy) treats. The buckets are made of plastic, but they are nicely made and of course reusable. Would this be acceptable and not too far from the standard party bags everyone expects?

I’m another one who wouldn’t love the plastic bucket. It’s just more tat to store or in reality chuck within a few weeks.

Paper party bags with cake, sweets and something fun or a book would be better.

DeepaBeesKit · 22/10/2021 06:25

Those sorts of plastic items are "reusable" but still not worth producing. Many people who use that sort of thing will already have one, the people who don't may only reuse it once or twice before chucking it. Its bulky to store.

Paper bag/ box.books, seeds & little cardboard plant pot, mini paper/cardboard craft kit or actually useful things like pens. Plus cake & a pack of sweets.

@2reefsin30knots

Just knock up a roll of felt at home out of some locally sourced wool and make bags out of that. You can fill them with lentils (which support the ecosystem when they grow) and a slice of vegan cake. If you want to add something else, you could put in an ocarina- they are great for kid's early musical development and music supports maths, so a great start towards the 11+ too.

Grin I suspect someone on here would find fault with even this!

@PurrBox that’s such a weak argument - because we use some plastic that isn’t recyclable why bother trying to reduce?

For what it’s worth, plastic orange buckets aren’t recyclable but you can recycle the majority of shampoo bottles and vegetable packaging.

wouldthatbeworse · 22/10/2021 14:38

My 5 year old would be delighted to receive this

MimiSunshine · 22/10/2021 14:44

@SheWoreYellow

If they’re particular about sugar then will they allow them to go trick or treating? If not the buckets will just be useless.

We’re actually moving away from even plastic bags in party bags. They’re all paper. I’d go for a paper bag with a small book (from a multipack), a balloon and a piece of cake.

You failed when you mentioned adding a balloon to your paper bag
Namechangedforthethousandthtim · 22/10/2021 14:50

All this thought over party bags, blimey. I'm glad I was a kid when we got bags rammed with plastic nonsense and sugar and not healthy snacks and a book Grin (fwiw, I love healthy snacks and books, but come on. It's a kids party.)

Lostmarbles2021 · 22/10/2021 14:51

Those buckets don’t last long. We got one at a party instead of a bag. Just thought you’d want to know OP. Paper bags are the best option if you are trying to be greener.

Namechangedforthethousandthtim · 22/10/2021 14:52

(the bucket is a great idea though!)

Figgygal · 22/10/2021 14:54

My 10-year-old has a bucket like that he’s got a bag of Halloween stuff in his wardrobe it comes out every year without fail

I’ve just had my youngest bday and we did paper bags with a book, packet of Haribo, a bit of cake and a pencil as he and his friend is about to start school. They were happy enough with that

Soubriquet · 22/10/2021 14:55

Last time I did party bags, they got cake, decent pencils, rubbers, sharpeners and a notepad

What about a flower bulb/seeds that grow over winter indoors like mizuna, cress or parsley?

Talking of grinches, I did two birthday parties for DC. Never again. Carved pumpkins for halloween (and made soup), Just no to party bags, balloons, plastic of any sort. Christmas is brown paper and string with potato prints.

Do I win?

Hoppinggreen · 22/10/2021 17:17

@Cuntness

WTF is wrong with a bath bomb for a four year old?

Marmite27 · 22/10/2021 17:19

I think they’re a bit big for a party bag, they take loads to fill up!

MumofSpud · 22/10/2021 17:26

My DS when he was little (5-9?) used to have Halloween parties. We used these buckets (or pumpkin cloth bags which were smaller.
Then they'd fill them during the party with the sweets etc from the games
Sorry but all completely rubbish ended up in the bags - no healthy snacksBlush

Wilkolampshade · 22/10/2021 17:26

Of course the paper bag is more environmentally friendly! It bio-degrades ffs so will be gone in a few years. The bucket? Still kicking around in landfill in 250 years.. Horrible plastic tat - please don't!
Cake in a napkin, that's the thing.

Your bath or your four year old??

I dunno OP. I have a four year old. I think you can still get away without a party bag at this age, but if you want to do one (as another parent / future party host) I’d like the slice of cake and a pencil/sheet of stickers/book/lucky dip/£1 Wilko activity book variety. Otherwise it all just escalates over the course of the year. And I don’t want more plastic nonsense in my home.

Concestor · 22/10/2021 20:36

We don't do Halloween due to our faith so I'd be a bit annoyed, but I'd just give it to the charity shop once the sweets were eaten.

My 4 year old. I emailed Lush who said it had never happened before but I saw reviews online that suggested otherwise. She faded eventually
Frazzledd · 22/10/2021 20:48

@Hoppinggreen How long did she take to fade!?

Paperyfish · 22/10/2021 21:10

My kids got a toffee apple after a Halloween party once and talked about in for months! How about a chocolate dipped apple as it’s less sugary, you can make it at home, it gets consumed, there’s a healthy element and it’s Halloween ish.

My 4 and 5 year old would absolutely love that bucket. Even better with a mini bag of haribo inside
