To think let’s get on with it is currently one of the most stupid phrases in the English language

I’m in Spain at the moment. Higher vaccination rates (we are 13th in Europe despite the government spouting on like a communist propaganda machine about our amazing roll out). There are far, far fewer daily deaths and hospitalisations (as is the case across all of Europe). And people in this city seem to be having a great time: no vaccine passports and bars and restaurants open.

And yet everywhere, no one is sprawling on buses and queues and public buildings and the train thinking they don’t have to wear a mask because they’re an exception (including the children). It’s helps thst masks here are dirt cheap (50 for four pounds) and there are signs telling people to think of others and be compliant rather than ‘take responsibility’ for themselves (as if Covid isn’t principally a public health crisis not a personal one).
Masks are such a tiny inconvenience, as is social distancing. Same with the vaccines for teens - everywhere else is doing these based on public health reasons. One shot has no scientific backing and people have been encouraged to think of themselves and not the vulnerable when getting shots - when a vaccine for your child is a vaccine that helps protect all, including the old.
It’s possible to have a good life and protect others in simple steps. It is possible to ‘get on with it’ without pretending we are not still in a pandemic as is the case now.
I don’t think English people are by culture so selfish and stupid. it’s down poor leadership - muddled messages by stupid government officials has turned us into a nation of selfish twats.

@ssd right back at you, if like I stated in my previous post, you didn't do any of things to prevent the spread of a virus before 2020. Smile

Wizzbangfizz · 21/10/2021 14:29

Masks are still mandatory in wales and Scotland and they have figures similar to us don't they?

CuntyMcBollocks · 21/10/2021 14:32

So this about covid and not the actual phrase itself. Why not just say that in the first place? Yabu.

lateforschool · 21/10/2021 15:12

But even with vaccinations the vulnerable are still vulnerable - a fully vaccinated 80 year old has the same risk of dying from Covid as an unvaccinated 50 year old.
We didn’t have a pandemic in previous years.

People like to insist covid makes no difference to how we should be behaving. Why they can't recognise its a completely new virus is a mystery.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 21/10/2021 15:59

@lateforschool

"We didn’t have a pandemic in previous years."

Yes, we did:

2009 H1N1
1968 H3N2
1957 H2N2
1918 "Spanish" flu.

Not to mention the seasonal flu viruses we get, which also kill many people.

Oh so I've only to care if it's a new virus. If I spread flu in 2019 and killed a granny it didn't count and I wasn't selfish then. Got you.
lateforschool · 21/10/2021 16:36

We didn’t have a pandemic in recent years in England. Hardly anyone is alive from 1918. I have photos of people wearing masks in hat pandemix btw

@lateforschool

Both the 1968 and the 2009 pandemics affected England, (the clue's in the word pandemic).

lateforschool · 21/10/2021 19:41

Less than 500 people died of swine flu in the 2008 pandemix in England. The comparison is moronic.

Actually your muddled logic is the same muddled logic of ‘let’s get on with it’ with getting on with it equivalent to acting as if there’s no problem at all, as opposed to getting on with it being a spectrum with minimal restrictions like vaccine passports and masks also getting on with it without putting the vulnerable at risk and causing death. Yes there may have been previous pandemics, but all pandemics are not the same and some pandemics are more lethal than others are require more action by governments and more precautions by citizens namely Covid which has killed close to 140,000 in the Uk in less than two years as opposed ti swine flu with its 2009 death rate of …400.

Czech Republic had one of first lockdowns, mandatory masks inside and out and strict rules - their outcome is not too dissimilar to U.K.. Sweden had much less restrictions and minimal masks, also similar outcome to U.K. ( and currently faring better )
I hate that masks have become normalised. Hideous

ThirdElephant · 21/10/2021 20:28

My question is, is there a point at which you envision life going back to maskless normality @lateforschool, and, if so, what is it?

AliceinBorderland · 21/10/2021 20:32

@Iggly

I agree. Wearing masks isn’t a personal responsibility- that makes it sound like you only have to worry about yourself. It’s a public health matter.

But then again selfish behaviour is the hallmark of a Tory

No labour supporter or politicians ever displayed selfish behaviour 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Nice one. Such a stupid comment has made my day
