I’m in Spain at the moment. Higher vaccination rates (we are 13th in Europe despite the government spouting on like a communist propaganda machine about our amazing roll out). There are far, far fewer daily deaths and hospitalisations (as is the case across all of Europe). And people in this city seem to be having a great time: no vaccine passports and bars and restaurants open.
And yet everywhere, no one is sprawling on buses and queues and public buildings and the train thinking they don’t have to wear a mask because they’re an exception (including the children). It’s helps thst masks here are dirt cheap (50 for four pounds) and there are signs telling people to think of others and be compliant rather than ‘take responsibility’ for themselves (as if Covid isn’t principally a public health crisis not a personal one).
Masks are such a tiny inconvenience, as is social distancing. Same with the vaccines for teens - everywhere else is doing these based on public health reasons. One shot has no scientific backing and people have been encouraged to think of themselves and not the vulnerable when getting shots - when a vaccine for your child is a vaccine that helps protect all, including the old.
It’s possible to have a good life and protect others in simple steps. It is possible to ‘get on with it’ without pretending we are not still in a pandemic as is the case now.
I don’t think English people are by culture so selfish and stupid. it’s down poor leadership - muddled messages by stupid government officials has turned us into a nation of selfish twats.
