To find evenings so boring

Poppets14 · 20/10/2021 21:14

What do you do on an evening?
We have dinner, one of us puts dd to bed while the other clears up.
Then my husband puts some rubbish on the TV - I might read or look at my phone.
I sometimes end up going to bed about 8:30 just because I’m so so bored.

What do you all do on an evening?

Yes I've spent too long looking at SPF reviews on my mobile, and now there's not enough time to watch a film so it's MN until sleep takes me.Sad how sad

Usernamqwerty · 20/10/2021 21:41

Eat dinner, watch TV, have a shower, play games on my phone, call people, sometimes study but don't usually have the energy!

Tothemoonandbackx · 20/10/2021 21:42

Thank Christ I'm not the only one, once DD is in bed, (single parent) I just tidy the complete amd utter chaos that's ensued, then sit down and look through my phone at things I can't afford, places I'd never be able to visit and maybe catch up on messages I may have missed. TV is s**t, can't actually remember the last time Isat down to watch anything, then off to bed.

DivorceAdvicePlease123 · 20/10/2021 21:43

I've gone back to college, evening course one night per week but you get loads of homework 😃

Youhaveyourhandsfull · 20/10/2021 21:45

Never quite get these threads, but perhaps I’m doing something wrong.
There’s always something that needs doing- take a child somewhere, go to the store. Once cooking, tidying and general stuff is as done as is possible and kids are sorted/read to/played a game with, I might send a few emails and maybe watch TV by 11. It’s rarely earlier than that really.

WhiskyXray · 20/10/2021 21:46

Read, write. Trying to relearn fancy sewing but it's horribly difficult now my eyes are going.

I hardly go on the internet anymore as it doesn't bring much joy, but if I do, clicking from entry to entry on www.etymonline.com/ can absorb me for looking stretches.

AuntieMarys · 20/10/2021 21:46

We always a Netflix/ Prime series on the go...watch an.episode a night. Usually in bed by 9.15 as dh gets up at 4.45. We read, play Scrabble and drink.

WhiskyXray · 20/10/2021 21:46

long stretches *

Davros · 20/10/2021 21:48

Jaysus I never find evenings boring. Sorry

TheNinny · 20/10/2021 21:52

Currently put DD to bed while DH cleans kitchen. Downstairs for 8.30 or so. Bugger about on phone/iPad until DD settles to sleep then video chat sister overseas. Then go on exercise bike for a bit while watching tv. In bed around 10,30/11

TwinklyBranch · 20/10/2021 21:53

My evenings can consist of: internetting on my phone, Duolingo, tidying up the kitchen, phoning my mum or my sister, watching TV, cross stitching, admin like paying bills or booking stuff, reading, exercising, messaging friends.
So it's not exactly riveting stuff. I'd still never say I was bored though. I love pottering about of an evening doing nothing much!

cabinfever102 · 20/10/2021 21:53

Oh those that don't understand boredom. Have adhd so I quite literally get stuck scrolling in endless loops looking for something I don't know what. If im tired or upset it's worse. When adhd is under control I go the opposite way and will stay up until midnight doing jobs snd cleaning. It's very hard to manage. I don't feel well today so I have literally stared at a screen for hours.

crimsonlake · 20/10/2021 21:56

I find the evenings are never long enough even though I am home at a reasonable time.
I tend to eat, then a combination of browsing the net and a couple of episodes of a box set. In my job role I have to entertain and chat to people all day, of an evening I want to speak to no one and do as little as possible.
Tbh as soon as it is dark, that signals downtools at home for some reason. God forbid is someone invited me out on a workday evening.

Inthetropics · 20/10/2021 21:58

Very surprised that some people find it boring, tbh. I read (don't find reading boring at all and look forward throughout the day to have some time to read), go on a walk, study, listen to music, do some cleaning/organizing, bake, have sex, and many other things.

PieMistee · 20/10/2021 21:58

I play football twice a week and usually go out drinking/restaurant/cinema/theatre once or twice, then snuggle up with DH on sofa the other nights watching a series.

politics4me · 20/10/2021 21:59

Build a boat in your garage? That's how the sailing dinghy craze started in 1960s and carries on now to a lesser degree. Rowing boats are also popular now. Light weight and go on a car top not a trailer? A winter of evenings should do it.
If no garage, model train or model village in a corner of the room.

mamacoast · 20/10/2021 22:04

Exercise - running and Pilates. Take my teenage daughters to their activities/hobbies. Prepare for the next day - eg respond to emails, household planning, organise work bag. Sit down and watch tv for an hour or so. Look forward to going to bed for a good sleep so I'm ready for the next day.

GlumyGloomer · 20/10/2021 22:05

In my opinion boredom is not having 'nothing' to do, because there is literally always something you can find to do. Boredom is doing something you don't want to. Op, I suggest the issue here is your dp's TV preferences.

godmum56 · 20/10/2021 22:06

@Poppets14

I don’t mind TV if there’s something worth watching but my husband always moans at the stuff I watch so it’s easier to let him put what he likes on. It makes me feel a bit down not knowing what to do- my mum says only boring people get bored 😳 I don’t enjoy exercise
retrain your husband!
SRS29 · 20/10/2021 22:09

@DoctorSnortles

I recommend it.

@Finknottlesnewt

I signed up for the Open University.. so doing a law degree.. I'm 57 so won't be a lawyer but might be able to help a charity out when qualified.. beats pointless telly any day .
This. Since I finished my degree I have found evenings much more aimless. However I think OP has a DP problem is she just lets him choose the telly every night. Maybe get another TV?
VikingLady · 20/10/2021 22:13

I live for the evenings! I'm genuinely surprised by how many people are bored! Evenings are never long enough for me.

I read without anyone interrupting or needing their bum wiped, I eat my posh treats that aren't for sharing (yes, the kids do get treats, but not my expensive chocs), I do pointlessly elaborate baking, I sew, I knit whilst watching tv, do puzzle books, play on my phone, do crafts, cuddle the cats. All without having to discuss dinosaurs, kittens or loom bands.

I may, very occasionally, also do housework.

Iamanunsafebuilding · 20/10/2021 22:21

Exercise! Gym Monday and Wednesday, run Tuesday and Thursday, watch telly and eat when I get home. Friday evenings are for drinking wine listening to music!

MrsDThomas · 20/10/2021 22:24

I walk, run, do weights, or just relax. My work is hectic so I appreciate being bored in the evening.

DDivaStar · 20/10/2021 22:26

I usually.do a short pilates session each night, just 20-30 mins. Do you fancy pilates, yoga, mindfulness or meditation ?

To be honest there's loads of things I'd like to do and do occasionally but I'm to tired and end up on here and drinking wine!

Sometimes I read or cross-stitch.
