To ask how reliable nub theory is

Last week I had my 12 week scan and because I'm horribly impatient decided to use a website to tell me their gender predictions based on the nub theory. I paid £10.

After doing a bit of research I understood it wasn't accurate but that there is some science behind it. I got my results and was chuffed but I noticed a disclaimer saying 'this website is for entertainment only and we do not offer a set accuracy rate'. So does this mean that I should take it with a pinch of salt? Has anyone else used one of these sites and had accurate results or was it wrong? They did offer an annotation on my scan picture so it's clearly been looked at and analysed but I've basically just wasted a tenner haven't I?

Yeah it's a theory, not a proven thing which I guess is why sonographers don't generally use it at 12 weeks. I have used it twice- dc2 there was no nub imaged, I was told girl at 20 weeks and he was, in fact, a boy Grin Current pregnancy tried again and was told girl nub but at every scan since (having regular scans due to complications), I've been told boy! So not only is nub theory not 100%, don't necessarily trust the 20 w scan either!!

teaandtoast33 · 20/10/2021 07:36

I was also told girl (already have a boy so this would be amazing if it were true!) so maybe girl is the default choice!

I'm trying not to take it seriously but it's in my head now!

My friend paid for two different sites to ‘analyse’ it and one said girl the other boy!
It’s supposed to be a bit of fun.
I did guess girl from my 12 week scan and was correct but I had a 50/50 chance of getting it right!

It sounds like you have a clear gender preference- I’d be careful managing your feelings about that.

I think you should disregard this so you don’t end up even more disappointed at your 20 week scan.

BelieveInRainbows · 20/10/2021 07:39

I paid £6 for mine. They said 87% accurate that I was having a girl (no idea how they work out their accuracy!). But multiple scans say I'm definitely having a boy Grin
Lots of people on my pregnancy group have had mostly wrong results too. I think it's pure coincidence if it happens to be correct tbh. Take these things as a bit of fun and get a private 'gender' scan if it's important to you. There's absolutely no way of knowing for sure so early on.

Bouncebacker · 20/10/2021 07:40

I have never paid for someone to look - but I was right both times with nub theory for my girl and my boy - but I didn’t want to know the sex until birth so I didn’t have that sense of desperation to know which I think you have.

shouldistop · 20/10/2021 07:40

About 50% accurate Wink

forinborin · 20/10/2021 07:47

There is some solid research behind it from the Fetal Medicine foundation, and it is a well defined problem for machine learning / image processing, so I can imagine it it reasonably easily solvable, say at a level of a masters thesis at a good uni.
Whether the website you used is credible... most likely not, due to many many techinical factors I won't bore you with.

MargaretThursday · 20/10/2021 07:47

If you send me £10 I'll take a guess. I have a 50% accuracy rate.

Clocktopus · 20/10/2021 07:51

An experienced sonographer can usually determine the sex at around 12-13 weeks if they get a good view, accuracy varies but is surprisingly high. I took part in a study when I was having one of my DC where they looked at the sex at my 12wk scan, again at my 20wk scan, and then followed up to check it at birth. The sonographer at 12wks was right.

These nub theory places? I'm not sure they're quite so experienced or trained so I'd take their prediction as a bit of fun and with a pinch of salt.

Bumblenums1234 · 20/10/2021 07:51

Most accurate thing I have ever used is the Chinese gender chart, I've never see it be wrong 😅

Clocktopus · 20/10/2021 07:52

It was wrong for me all four times Grin

Ponoka7 · 20/10/2021 07:53

My DD went for private sexing scans at 14 weeks, sometimes there's an offer on at Groupon. Where we live they are £40 for the basic scan. You could know for sure in around ten days.

tiggerwhocamefortea · 20/10/2021 07:59

There is a feee Facebook site called the nubologists or nub theory or something and it's free.....in my experience from what I've seen they have been accurate 90% of the time

teaandtoast33 · 20/10/2021 11:24

Well I tried Nubologists as pp suggested using the same scan photo and they have said that no clear nub is visible so that proves the other one was likely bullshit Grin

Ah well, patience is a virtue...

Don't pay!

There's whole forums dedicated to the fun of guessing nubs as well as Facebook pages.

I can't believe people are charging, that's so naughty.

Mine were right for all 3 of ours, all boys, all very clear nubs.

I don't think I got one girl guess actually!

But that's purely because the nub was so obvious.

Not for my first son because he is 15 and the scan wasn't very clear.

TheGoogleMum · 20/10/2021 12:12

Yes you've wasted a tenner! Accept you can't be 100% sure of the sex until the baby is out I think! Although sometimes it is very obvious on later scans

CoalCraft · 20/10/2021 12:27

You did waste a tenner, yes! Try to disregard the answer you got, it's as likely to be wrong as right.

With DD I asked to be told the sex at the 20 wk scan, but she kept her legs crossed. Sonographer said she thought girl but hadn't see enough to be sure. We ran with it but had in our mines that DD might be a he! In the end though the sonographer was right.

I'm hoping a hypothetical DC2 is more cooperative and we can find out at 20 weeks, though I wouldn't pay to find out sooner.

Cuntness · 20/10/2021 12:27

@Bumblenums1234

Apparently I'm having a girl. Baby is coming in two weeks so I'll let you know. 🤣
kevinmcan · 20/10/2021 12:27

No website will allow you to predict exactly who will end up. Any service is a scam. Especially those who take money for it. Sites like Kidshealth or this site will no predict you who will born. Do waste ypur time and money.

WakeMeUpin22 · 20/10/2021 12:52

Can you you post your scan photo here? We all love a guess & I'm pretty good at it. Wink just block out any information, if you do.

TheGoogleMum · 20/10/2021 12:55

The Chinese gender chart was wrong about DD

EurghCobwebs · 05/11/2021 07:27

Has baby arrived yet @Cuntness?

Pazuzu · 05/11/2021 08:11

Pay me £500 and I'll state the sex of the baby. 50% accuracy rate.

Romemarie · 05/11/2021 08:17

Nub theory was right for me. . At 13 weeks.
I had a gender scan at 18 weeks to confirm it. And my 21 week scan also confirmed it again. And shes definitely a girl...

Essex85 · 06/12/2021 19:15

I paid a website to guess with my first child. Told me 97% boy. I had a girl!
