DP said I was silly for this

So today we were in a car park and a man that worked there came along to help us and have a general chat. As he was leaving he said enjoy the rest of your afternoon.. to which I responded you too! DP then scoffed "he's at work" I said you do know not everyone hates being at work? Some people's jobs give them a purpose. He said "I suppose" so anyway I now feel like a total idiot and am slightly cringing thinking about it Blush

WIBU to tell the man to enjoy his afternoon even though he was at work?

It's a polite thing to say and there's no reason he won't enjoy his job. Lots of people do.

iklboo · 19/10/2021 17:57

For all your DH knows the chap might have been finishing his shift soon after speaking to you. Giving him the afternoon off to enjoy.

It's polite conversation and not silly at all.

Bogiesaremyonlyfriend · 19/10/2021 17:58

I told the lady at the check in desk "you too" when she said have a nice flight! That might be a bit silly but have a nice day is perfectly fine

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 19/10/2021 17:59

Yeah, I say, “You too..!” when the takeaway people tell me to enjoy my food.

Bless me, I try.

nancybotwinbloom · 19/10/2021 18:01

Used to work in a call centre and the people who are friendly and nice make it bearable.

QuestionNumberOne · 19/10/2021 18:03

It was a polite response. Your DH is being a jerk.

situas · 19/10/2021 18:04

@Bogiesaremyonlyfriend @TheLightSideOfTheMoon I know exactly what you both mean. It's just your impulse reaction to say something positive isn't it.

I always say “You too”. They may love their job, they may be finishing in 10 minutes to go to a party. You don’t know but it’s a nice thing to do, wish someone a nice day. Mean of him to make you feel silly.

steff13 · 19/10/2021 18:09

I do that, too. Also, the waitstaff at a restaurant. Blush
Karwomannghia · 19/10/2021 18:10

Sounds quite exhausting having him pick up on things like that especially when they’re completely normal and polite.

Toiletrollbuyer · 19/10/2021 18:12

I love my job, and when my customers say ‘enjoy the rest of your day’ it makes me happy. Little comments like that make my job so enjoyable. Your DP is definitely overthinking it and maybe needs a change of career if he thinks enjoying being at work is odd.

skodadoda · 19/10/2021 18:12

YANBU it’s up there you how you speak to people not DP. Nip this in the bud, don’t let him scoff attitude you.

ILiedAboutBeingTheOutdoorType · 19/10/2021 18:12

Seems like an entirely normal and polite thing for you to say in conversation.

Dixiechickonhols · 19/10/2021 18:13

You were normal and polite. It’s social pleasantries.

HeavenlyCloud9 · 19/10/2021 18:14

I absolutely hate my job & have this exchange quite often with customers. I don't ever think of it in any way other than them being friendly & polite.

AutistAwayWithUrConditionalLuv · 19/10/2021 18:19

There's nothing people won't complain about. You're wishing someone to have a good day, that includes have a good day at work, at home, at the supermarket, on the street, wherever they are and will go next.

What does "he's at work" have to do with it? A perfectly reasonable and lovely (imo) way to say goodbye, for both parties.

icedcoffees · 19/10/2021 18:31

It's just social niceties, isn't it? You didn't do anything wrong.

NewlyGranny · 19/10/2021 18:35

How funny - I just received another tone-policing rant about what he thinks I was thinking when I spoke to him. If you can't fault the words, fault the tone - it's so nice and subjective...

Jennifer2r · 19/10/2021 18:36

Presumably if his best friend or boss or colleague said that he wouldn't call them silly. It's disrespectful and flippant to think he can police your words.

Livpool · 19/10/2021 19:06

I say it people all the time - even call centre workers. I just thought it was polite

Yogawankonobi · 19/10/2021 19:08

Your DP is rude.

HoHoHoHoHoHoHo · 19/10/2021 19:15

When people in restaurants say "enjoy your food" I have to bite back saying "you too" 😂 it's trained into me!

What you said was perfectly polite!

Coyoacan · 19/10/2021 19:29

It is so sad to automatically assume that someone doesn't enjoy their work.

I've had horrible jobs in my youth, sure enough, but I generally enjoy work.

CaptSkippy · 19/10/2021 20:15

I don't get it. Even if someone does hate their job, surely it wouldn't be improved by people refusing to wish them a nice day.

Summersdreaming · 19/10/2021 20:22

Better than replying 'ok, you too, love you!' I've done that a few times!
