To think this class should be closed?

I'm a part time primary teacher and in the space of two weeks, 14 children have tested positive out of 30 in my class.
We've had 2 or 3 return in that time, but more and more are testing positive. Now my teaching assistant has it.
AIBU to think we should be sending the class home and remote learning? How would you feel if you were a parent of a child in my class?
Oh, and I'm pretty anxious about my level of exposure too!
@SheikhMaraca - perhaps if social distancing, mask wearing and better safety in schools and workplaces had remained mandatory he wouldn’t have caught it.
His death was totally unnecessary so I don’t think they will get over it. The U.K. government and population have handled Covid so badly.
We just can’t live life like this though, we will all die of something, so all death is ‘necessary’.

Shall we ban cars because someone lost their life in a car accident, despite wearing a seatbelt?

Shall we force all people to limit their calories to 1500 per day to prevent deaths from obesity?

We need to be realistic that we are all mortal, and although it is so sad when we lose a loved one too early, it falls well within the bounds of ‘normal things that happen in life’ and we need to become more comfortable with this idea.

Parker231 · 20/10/2021 13:45

There is no hardship to wear a mask and maintain social distancing to protect others but too many are too selfish. Other countries have managed Covid so much better than the U.K. and had less deaths.

toomuchlaundry · 20/10/2021 13:46

@SheikhMaraca if we are all going to die why do we have health and safety laws, medicine, seatbelts?

Parker231 · 20/10/2021 13:47

And yes we can live our lives with minor restrictions if it protects others. Start thinking of others rather than yourself

beentoldcomputersaysno · 20/10/2021 13:58

What do you think the response would be if you were in another country OP? Of course it should close and teachers shouldn't have to put up with this shit. Neither should kids.

borntobequiet · 20/10/2021 13:58

But if this virus hadn't originated many would have lived their normal life's and died from another risk of life. A car accident etc. Life involves Risk. We never know when or how we will die or what of. Life is a gamble. Nobody has a guaranteed pass to live. No human can be that privileged. Some people cannot get their head around this.

It’s hard to know where to start when attempting to criticise this.

BeardyButton · 20/10/2021 14:01

Jesus! The analogy with cars doesn’t work. We ve spent 100 years actively crafting policy and laws to decrease RTAs. There are numerous charts showing the decrease of road death per driver available. Seatbelts, speed limits, fines, driving licenses, on and on and on.

But ya! Wearing a mask etc is jst too much....

borntobequiet · 20/10/2021 14:02

No, but we might look for other factors that might have contributed and see if those could be mitigated against.

Ever considered a career in bereavement counselling?

Let's not bother trying to reduce risk for any illness, remove all safety measures for driving, remove measures for working at height. We are all going to die anyway. May as well close hospitals too.

How we are treating school communities is beyond disgusting.

It’s an erosion of our civil liberties, that many, many people died in order for us to have.

Do you not see the irony of us now systematically giving them up because #SaveLives?

And we have spent the last 18months mitigating the risk of this virus. I'm not against masks. We have developed a vaccine. We have bankrupted our country. We need to say enough is enough. It seems the government agree as it has just been announced no further measures will be enforced.

BeardyButton · 20/10/2021 14:12

“It’s an erosion of our civil liberties, that many, many people died in order for us to have”

See!? Honestly, the idiocy of it! Wearing a mask!!!! But unfortunately, stuff like this has effected policy making in the UK.

BeardyButton · 20/10/2021 14:13

Ya! Because Boris isn’t known for backtracking....

As it should.

I’m not sure I understand your point?

Parker231 · 20/10/2021 14:15

@SheikhMaraca - loss of civil liabilities to wear a mask and maintain social distancing. You’re on a different planet!

Thankfully. But that poster and others like them have influenced policy. Let it rip is an experiment. I think UK is ready to admit it hasn’t worked. I hope so. I hope we don’t get all the way to collapse of healthcare, education etc before a halt is called. But we’ll see.

The State forcing you to wear/not wear something is absolutely an encroachment on the civil liberties of the individual.

The law should always be negative, once we start down the path of positive legislation, we find ourselves on a slippery slope.

(…and before anyone says it, whilst I would always wear one, I don’t think seatbelts should be mandatory either, it’s not the business of the state to protect us from our own poor choices)

SheikhMaraca · 20/10/2021 14:27

Fortunately we have a government in power which recognises the importance of limiting the interference of the State in the private life of the individual, so yes I think the virus will be circulating freely from here on in.

If people still want to #StaySafe, I’d absolutely support their right to do so, but the onus is on them to take the steps they feel necessary, not everybody else.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 20/10/2021 14:29

I'm enjoying the rank hypocrisy of bleating about masks and seatbelts being an infringement on human rights whilst simultaneously telling the 600,000 immunosuppressed people to separate themselves from society.

beentoldcomputersaysno · 20/10/2021 15:07

I want protecting from their poor choices

Well quite, all people are equal but some people are more equal than others.

Angry Sad

luckylavender · 20/10/2021 15:15

@ImUninsultable - I have every sympathy for you but there is more we can and should do. Many people think it's over.Masks should be mandatory, including in schools. SD should be reinforced. There needs to be a constant push for vaccination, the 12-15s and those eligible for the booster. It's tailed off massively.
