To still feel anxious about overseas travel

Onedaylikethis21 · 17/10/2021 11:36

We had a short break to Rome booked for half term but postponed it until next year as still feel quite anxious about covid. Sticking to a few days in a U.K. city instead.

Friend thinks we are bonkers - they are going to Greece at half term.

Aibu? Am I the only one still anxious about overseas travel in terms of covid? I mean you could argue given the rates here that we are more at risk here but I was worried about getting stuck overseas. I know the rules have slightly changed now but it still doesn’t feel like everything is back to normal.

But maybe I am the only one thinking that!!

I get you even though I've travelled abroad throughout all of this

LagneyandCasey · 17/10/2021 11:42

Yanbu. It's totally up to you if you're not comfortable with it yet. Not worth it if you're constantly worrying about getting covid on holiday and being stuck there.

Justlovedogs · 17/10/2021 11:43

YANBU to do what feels right for you. DH and I delayed a trip to the carribean in November, not so much due to risks but the restrictions when there. Our choice, others might think different but up to them. Enjoy the UK, OP Smile.

Naaaaah · 17/10/2021 11:47

I think you should go. Life cannot indefinitely be put on hold. Life is full of risk. You're more likely to get food poisoning than catch covid.

MissAmbrosia · 17/10/2021 11:48

You're more likely to take covid with you than catch it there.

Cherryana · 17/10/2021 11:52

I postponed my holiday in the summer because of the risk around if we caught it out there, we couldn't afford to stay out there and that was the deciding factor.

I just travelled recently to Germany and I felt that it was good.
Everyone at the airport has a negative PCR and then coming home we needed a negative test. Also in Germany they were hot on everyone having to show a negative test that was within three days. I can not wait to go abroad again because it was so brilliant to be in Germany.

It's like everything, weigh up the risks to you, alongside your financial ability to deal with an unexpected plan b.

Borderterrierpuppy · 17/10/2021 11:53

I will only go to places I would be happy and can afford to be stuck in if one of us gets covid whilst there.
Fwiw we just had a lovely half term in Scotland, friends went to Greece and has earthquakes rain and thunder storms.

toolazytothinkofausername · 17/10/2021 12:05

I wouldn't go abroad. What if I caught covid whilst abroad then wasn't allowed to fly home?

icedcoffees · 17/10/2021 12:07

The risk of catching COVID is higher in the UK than it is overseas.

Oblomov21 · 17/10/2021 12:20

That's your decision. That's their view. It's not affecting them is it?

I have been to both Ljubljana and Lisbon for long weekends recently. Had the best time. I find it hard to understand anxiety though.

ilovesooty · 17/10/2021 12:24

@icedcoffees

The risk of catching COVID is higher in the UK than it is overseas.
Exactly. I enjoyed my two holidays abroad and can't wait to go again

Everyone's different though. However I can't believe people book to go abroad without fully understanding the procedures and paperwork prior to booking.

HelplessProcrastinator · 17/10/2021 12:25

I’m not at anxious about CoViD, already had it anyway. It’s all the rules and restrictions putting me off. I have a 14 year old we we are severely restricted anyway. Can’t wait to go abroad but it doesn’t seem like fun at the moment.

Coogee · 17/10/2021 12:27

I’ve been abroad twice since the start of the pandemic. Yes, there was some mild anxiety about something going wrong. However, the chances of being stuck there were slim and if it had happened we could afford any costs not covered by our travel insurance.

I was more bothered about testing positive on arrival and having to spend two weeks of the holiday in quarantine.

Gothichouse40 · 17/10/2021 12:28

I don't blame you. I won't be going abroad any time soon. For me, it's the fear of being stranded. Also a holiday abroad is just going to be the same sh** different country. Why would I pay a fortune to wear masks and queue abroad. The only thing different will be scenery and weather.

Sprostongreen21 · 17/10/2021 12:28

Some people are comfortable, some aren’t. I think both are fine. It’s strange times and covid is very much still around.

We’ve been on holiday: short U.K. breaks when we’ve been able. I was put off going abroad by quarantines, testing, forms and different rules. Covid is worse here than most other places so that doesn’t worry me.

Things seem easier now in regards to travel. I personally know many more people going abroad. We tend to go in September so have decided to do our usual U.K. breaks and then hopefully all being well a euro city break in September. Also gives more time .

DILevil · 17/10/2021 12:30

I wouldn’t as would be worried about catching covid here due to the high rate in schools/exposed to many different groups now. But then I would take the 10days to test positive and be stuck abroad then in a government designated hotel for 2 weeks with no window. That doesn’t sound like a holiday one bit.

DILevil · 17/10/2021 12:31

Also places like Spain/Italy are far stricter with their mask wearing, so those who want to go abroad to forget about it/be mask feee won’t enjoy it as much.

Hairbrush123 · 17/10/2021 12:31

YANBU to feel uncomfortable. You should only do what you want to do.

You have to ask yourself, what if the situation doesn’t change this time next year? What are you expecting to change? I’ve been to Greece and Canada in the last 8 weeks and it was wonderful. A friend of mine caught covid in Cornwall as she too was avoiding travel abroad. Good luck to whatever you do

Tal45 · 17/10/2021 12:32

UK cases 43,000 yesterday, Italy cases 2900. Personally I feel safer going abroad than here and have travelled throughout. We're going abroad for October half term and I am counting down the hours. If it makes you feel uncomfortable though and you're not going to enjoy it because of that then better that you put it off. We've had three UK short breaks this year and on two of them our activities were cancelled because it was too windy and on the third it rained for most of it so i can't wait for a bit of winter sun.

TwinklyBranch · 17/10/2021 12:33

You're not the only one. I was an anxious traveller even before the pandemic. Now, with all the extra rules and regulations, the hassle of testing and so on, there's no way I'd go abroad just for a holiday. I'm not one of those people who need warmth and sunshine so I'm quite happy to holiday in the UK.

Oblomov21 · 17/10/2021 12:33

"Can’t wait to go abroad but it doesn’t seem like fun at the moment."

It is fun.

It's not hard if you read the guidelines, buy the tests, fill in the passenger locator forms. I've done it twice recently for 3 women away for a long weekend. Not tricky, if you are systematic and organised.

MrsSkylerWhite · 17/10/2021 12:34

Understand completely. Travel rules can still change at short notice in the winter months and for that reason alone I’d be reluctant atm too, couldn’t afford to isolate at £1,850 if suddenly required.

Wouldn’t be worried about contracting Covid overseas, though. We have much higher infection rates than most countries.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 17/10/2021 12:37

@toolazytothinkofausername

I wouldn't go abroad. What if I caught covid whilst abroad then wasn't allowed to fly home?
That would be my concern too so we aren’t planning anything until cases really drop.
uggmum · 17/10/2021 13:03

I am abroad at the moment.
In Mauritius.

I was wasn't stressed about travelling but I was stressed about testing before I went and not being able to travel. I also needed 2 additional tests on arrival (day one and day five)

However, it all went well. It's lovely being away. It doesn't feel any different than before the pandemic. The only difference is wearing a mask when walking inside the hotel.

I have a really comprehensive covid travel insurance policy so I was not concerned about catching it here, needing medical treatment or costs incurred for delayed travel.

It's personal choice. But now I am here it all seems worth it.

Doorhandleghost · 17/10/2021 13:10

No one is right or wrong here, it’s up to you as to where your comfort levels lie and what you’re happy to do and why. Your friends should wind their necks in!
