AIBU - clothes are either clean or dirty

DP is currently decorating a chair with multiple items of clothing.

He says they're airing out and are neither fit to hang up or be washed again.

IMO clothes are either clean enough to hang up and wear or need to be washed. Where is the grey area??

He says I'm being ridiculous and it's totally normal.

AIBU?

You know that certain smell many charity and vintage shops have? That's the smell of unwashed clothes. They may very well be clean enough to wear again but they've still been worn. Whether you like it or not, worn clothes have bacteria. In time, this produces an odour.

I'm with your husband on this - keep worn and unworn clothes separate. Also make sure you wash clothes from charity/vintage shops before putting them away in your drawers/wardrobe unless you are certain they've been steamed.

GemmaRuby · 15/10/2021 21:42

I installed two sets of hooks in the corner of the bedroom (one set for me, one for DH) for this very purpose. Also houses my dressing gown.
Where do people keep dressing gowns if not clothes hooks/chairs?

Saoirse82 · 15/10/2021 21:43

It's not a thing in my house, it's one or the other.

WhyAmIDoingIt · 15/10/2021 21:43

I keep a drawer under my bed for 'between washing ' clothes. I put a couple of tumble drier sheets in there every week or so to keep the drawer smelling fresh.

I do try though to reuse the wearing of items within a few of days however or they do end up smelling musty if left too long.

Me too. Something worn for half a day needs to be worn another half a day, it can't just go straight in the laundry. But it does need to be differentiated from stuff that hasn't been worn at all. I guess the ideal would be a shelf and hanging space in the wardrobe for these things but somehow there never is.
MerryMarigold · 15/10/2021 21:43

I have a chair. Ds1 has a towel stand, DD has a towel stand, DS2 the bathroom floor and DH uses the garage floor for jogging stuff 🤢.

puddlebubble · 15/10/2021 21:44

I believe in the grey area and is that not what the bedroom chair is for?

RobertaFirmino · 15/10/2021 21:44

Forgot to add, there is a thing called a valet stand available. Looks like this:

I put worn clothes on a hanger so as not crease them, hang on the wardrobe door frame to air and then put it back the next day. Clothes don't need to be washed after just 1 wear only pants and socks need that.

tortoiselover100 · 15/10/2021 21:45

I throw all clothes in the laundry basket, I never rehang. Then every couple of days I'll go through them all and anything looking clean gets re ironed and hung, the rest goes in the wash. That way it all feels fresh

Eealoty · 15/10/2021 21:45

Yes. Saying that, anything just forgotten about on the chair ends up usually going in the washing anyway. I always sniff it first. If it passes a few days often a slight smell has developed.

ChateauxNeufDePoop · 15/10/2021 21:46

@legofootcasualty

OK so this might be a thing...

But then there should be a proper place for the in-between clothes to go, not just creating a permanent mess!

A separate hanging rail or something

No that's literally what bedroom chairs are for. No "might" about it.
Tomatalillo · 15/10/2021 21:46

You need a Clothes valet chair thing OP! This one is La Redoute

I saw a really stylish one somewhere once that I can’t find again, but this is the kind of thing

LopsidedWombat · 15/10/2021 21:48

I hang my clothes to be worn again on hooks on the back of bedroom door. I wear them again soon though, don't have space to build up a collection.

stupiduser · 15/10/2021 21:48

@legofootcasualty there is a proper place. The clothes chair

lemmein · 15/10/2021 21:50

I hang mine on the treadmill.

I remove them when I want to exercise - never!

lljkk · 15/10/2021 21:51

@LastStarfighter

If you put worn clothes back in the wardrobe they can attract moths, but often clothes can be worn more than once after airing. Sounds perfectly normal to me.
Exactly that -- don't put anything in wardrobe (dark place) that might have moisture or sweat on it. Invitation to clothes moths.
SkankingMopoke · 15/10/2021 21:53

I'm with your DH here too. I bought a vintage valet stand from ebay to solve the issue of the floordrobe. My DH has been coveting it, so I am on the lookout for another for him for Xmas.

TheOrigRights · 15/10/2021 21:57

I don't have a chair in my bedroom.
Clothes that need washing go in the laundry basket, everything else back in the chest of drawers or wardrobe.
I'll wear the same thing loads of times before washing - jeans, hoodies, tracksuit bottoms.
I don't think anyone knows I don't have a chairdrobe!

I do a lot of sport and have a sedentary job so sports stuff gets washed lots, and the rest doesn't really get grubby.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 15/10/2021 21:57

Moths like clean clothes, too, provided the material is what they need to survive.
I have a section in my wardrobe for 'to be worn again aired clothing'.
When I taught my DC to do the laundry I started out with 'how to decide if something needs washing' (socks and underwear after one use).

Perfect.

That's sort of what I use.

The planet is going to hell in a handcart, so anything, like (gasp) rewearing clothes a couple of times is fine by me.

BlackeyedSusan · 15/10/2021 21:59

there should be a proper place, I agree.

A separate hanging rail or something

There is in this house- my husband bought himself a little clothes rack/rail thing from IKEA to put in the corner of the room for exactly this reason. It does bug me but at least then the clothes aren’t lying around everywhere.
noodlezoodle · 15/10/2021 22:02

I have a ladder thingy leaing up against the wall for clothes that are worn but not ready for a wash. Somehow less messy than piling stuff on a chair.
