AIBU to be disappointed in this cake…

I picked up dds cake today and it was not what I expected.

Would you be happy with this cake? I’ve attached two pics below, one was the pic I sent to the cake maker of what I wanted (a family dog) and the other picture is of the cake.

Also his head is made of Rice Krispies as apparently heads are hard to do. I wasn’t aware that it wouldn’t be all sponge.

It’s from a proper cake shop, not someone who does it as a hobby.

What do you all think?

We had this made last month from a local baker who runs a business from home and she only charged £40 and we were delighted with it. I felt like I was ripping her off to be honest and I thought at the time, god she can't be making a lot off that! So I can easily see how something bigger would cost £100 but I probably would have expected a bit more attention to detail tbh I'm not surprised you're disappointed.

I can't get over how rude your daughter was.

SunShinesBrightly · 15/10/2021 22:06

hoomans

That’s amazing!

schoolsoutforever · 15/10/2021 22:09

It’s fine and looks reminiscent of your dog enough for a cake but £110 on a nine year old’s cake is madness isn’t it? It’s just going to get eaten vvvv quickly and do nine year olds care?

hoomans · 15/10/2021 22:11

These are some other cakes done by the same lady so it is possible to get good quality cakes for not extortionate prices but I suspect it is rare and I expected to pay more than I paid tbh!

I probably would have expected it to look something like this

This is actually almost a replica of your dog 😄

110 pounds for a cake??? Jeez. I would never.

However. It is a very cute cake.the baker did and amazing job.

RussianSpy101 · 15/10/2021 22:15

I think your daughters rude attitude is a bigger problem than a cake of your dog.

I've read all the OP's posts and can't see anything objectionable in her daughter's behaviour.
AllFanjoAndNoSnickers · 15/10/2021 22:24

@Bootikin

Jesus Christ, the money you’ve spent on shite for kids birthdays is frightful. Are you the Kardashians of t’North or something? Tons of money and conspicuous consumption, hideously entitled children and no taste. Dearie me.

(And, yes, cake-makers should be paid properly for their time and skill and ingredients - but FFS: the OP's idea of raising and dashing a 9 yr old's expectations of a £100+ birthday cake when they would pretty much all be happy with a Colin the Caterpillar, especially if they get to eat the face? Give me strength).

FWBNC · 15/10/2021 22:26

@PurpleFlower1983

Something like this is much more realistic but would have likely cost even more.
I live this one!!
MerryMarigold · 15/10/2021 22:27

@PineappleTart

Were you expecting something like this?
This has just given me and my DD nightmares. It's so evil/ haunted. Look at it's teeth!!
CoconutQueen · 15/10/2021 22:28

£110 for a cake!!?? Good grief

FWBNC · 15/10/2021 22:31

@Marelle

It’s a cake not a sculpture, it looks fine to me. But I do agree that it’s wrong for them to substitute the cake head for Rice Krispies without confirming with you. Who on earth puts icing on Rice Krispies?
Most cake decorators.

How long do you think it takes to make cakes?!
MrsToadflax · 15/10/2021 22:35

Not great, but what brief did you send? I always send full examples of similar cakes, whether I want sugar paste or buttercream and exactly what appearance I'd like (in your shoes I'd have said I'd like it realistic and not cartoonish). Then I'd have a chat with the baker to check if any questions and all clear. I've never been disappointed. The obvious mistake is choosing a baker who specialises in drippy cakes to do a very detailed modelled cake. It's a very different skill that takes years to perfect.

me4real · 15/10/2021 22:41

I agree that it might be disturbing to cut into a realistic-looking dog. For my sister's 30th or something, we had a cake with a copy of a photo of her face on in cake. It was a bit disturbing to cut it into slices.

ellyeth · 15/10/2021 22:46

I think it's OK. You're obviously not going to get a naturalistic representation of a dog - not without paying a vast amount of money anyway. For a child I think it is appropriate.

KarmaStar · 15/10/2021 22:52

I don't like it either op.

sendaisnow · 15/10/2021 22:53

Why are people ordering cakes requiring their children to cut up their pets?

chaosrabbitland · 15/10/2021 23:02

it is impressive and bears a resembalence to your dog , there is a lot a professional cake maker can do ,but they are never going to be able to recreate an exact replica of him in cake or any other animal

LimitIsUp · 15/10/2021 23:04

@SheWoreYellow

It’s cute, but I’m not sure it’s £110 cute.
Same.

I actually voted YABU before I read the price, but now knowing it was £110 I am not so sure

She said it didn't look like the dog but hse liked it. After op admitted she'd been bigging up the cake so her daughter was understandably always going to be anticlimaxed because she'll be expecting something unrealistic
