Not to pay for last night's hotel

PlateSpinnerExtraordinaire · 14/10/2021 07:41

I am away on business- an important event today and I need to be thinking straight.
I arrived last night and have spent quite a lot of money on a "boutique" hotel.
The room was dreadful- tiny and not clean but I was willing to let that pass for now (not great in a pandemic though!)
I had to go down to reception at 1am and ask to move rooms as it was noisy as there was some sort of extractor fan from a ?kitchen was running outside the room and even with all the windows shut and a pillow over my head and iPods in I could still hear it!
They moved me to another room (I had to pack up my stuff and get back into bed at 2am). That room had a fire exit light which flashed brightly all night. So still no sleep rant is less there fault but I can't sleep if there is light.
There has been NO apology at any time.
So I'm tired, big day today and I supposed to stay here tonight too.
So do I:

  1. Complain again
  2. Leave and if so should I pay for last night????

Please give me break.

Many would NOT put stuff into safety deposit boxes if they were in the room WITH it over night. Let alone in reception. That's what a bedside table is for.

It only got left because OP had do a middle of the night room change.

Even more reason if OP did a middle of night room change to grab her necklace and take it with her then eh? Or is it only me that would do this?

Oh and actually when staying in hotel rooms abroad yes I have put valuables I value in the safety deposit box on the hotel room because you never know what might happen.

Are you saying you NEVER make a mistake or forget things????

Well done you.

sunglassesonthetable · 15/10/2021 13:12

Like I said give us all a break.

And I don't think OP was 'abroad'.

sunglassesonthetable · 15/10/2021 13:14

Just putting her necklace on the bedside and then forgetting it, changing rooms in the middle of the night.

Doesn't scream wild and careless to me but hey.

OK - yes I know OP wasn't 'abroad' - makes no difference.

My point, which is totally valid, is if something is so valuable to you, you ensure, even in a sleep deprived state of either placing this in the room's safe deposit box or putting this with security at reception, whether this be middle of the night or not. I actually don't make mistakes or forget things if the items are very valuable and sentimental value, no. I do the double/triple check thing.

I hope OP does manage to get her necklace found somehow and she's had an awful stay regardless so far.

sunglassesonthetable · 15/10/2021 15:36

Like I said well done you. The rest of us do make mistakes.

PackedintheUK · 15/10/2021 15:57

This is why I always book a chain hotel. Travel lodge may be basic, but you know what you're going to get.

Independents can be great but too often they're not.

I think you can "mention" review sites and ask for a refund/to be let off payment, but if they don't agree you need to pay.

2bazookas · 15/10/2021 16:27

Pay and leave.

Paying is not optional.

notapizzaeater · 15/10/2021 17:39

I’d be tweeting the hell out of it tbh along with pictures

whynotwhatknot · 15/10/2021 18:15

I think you should be asking for the owner/manager now not keep talking to someone on reception

Bebethany · 15/10/2021 18:15

PlateSpinnerExtraordinaire But you can claim those expenses back!

HarrisonStickle · 15/10/2021 18:39

This thread has to be nonsense surely.

The OP pays for work hotel expenses out of her own pocket.

She doesn't complain when shown to a dirty room.

She complains when the noise keeps her awake, moves to another room with a flashing fire escape light, but doesn't complain about that.

She takes an expensive necklace with sentimental value with her on a work trip.

She decides to stay in the second room another night without complaining because....?

Tulipomania · 15/10/2021 18:48

OP, report necklace to police and claim on your insurance.

Datafan55 · 15/10/2021 18:55

Sympathy OP, this is/was the last thing you want(ed) when you are 1) pre an important event and 2) looking forward to a decent night’s rest prior to it. fully agree that looking for an alternative late at night and then when you are at an important work event is the last time you want to look around. Plus if you are anything like me, you chose very carefully, so a quick change would not only distract you from your work but could go wrong too.

Cleanliness is something they can control, but features are not. That said, I think I can visualise those fire exit signs – and they are bright. I haven’t stayed in a hotel for a few years, but I saw one on ‘four in a bed’ once and couldn’t believe it; I’d not be happy (or asleep) if I had one in my room. Similarly the noise – you expect a certain level of noise in a hotel, and plan accordingly –(I take ear plugs/ipod with white noise everywhere), but some noise is too loud. You are not a ‘snowflake’ because they disturb you!

Tulipomania · 15/10/2021 19:06

Lots of people giving OP a hard time about the neckalce. Lay off.

I have a pendant necklace which has huge sentimental value and is quite valuable.

I often wear it to tricky work events as a lucky charm. It makes me feel confident.

The last time I did this, the chain must have broken because I suddenly noticed it wasn't there and couldn't find it anywhere.

I was lucky, I told the venue and they found the pendant part when they were cleaning up. I never got the chain back, although that was much easier to replace.

Symapthies to you OP.

smiffy54 · 15/10/2021 19:36

Some years ago, we stayed a smart hotel in Blackpool, yes they do exist. Had stayed before, but this time in a small, grubby room seemingly furnished with grannies rejects. We were above the function room where there was a wedding, disco racket until 1pm. After 3 complaints, it stopped when I went to reception sobbing hysterically. My mum had died the week before and I was a little sensitive. We've stayed since, and have had room upgrades ( Presidential suite!), complimentary wine, and meal vouchers. Made the agony almost worthwhile!

sadie9 · 15/10/2021 19:43

Do they not already have a credit card on the room? They'll just take the amount off that anyway.

Nocutenamesleft · 15/10/2021 19:57

I’d let the hotel know how dreadful it was and let them fix the mistakes

I think it’s really cowardly to pay and leave but then leave a crap review. The hotel can’t help if they don’t know. Can they.

Bertiebiscuit · 15/10/2021 20:34

I would pay simply to protect my reputation - but I would slaughter theirs - speak out on social media, complain to everyone and everything you can think of, trip advisor, Facebook, twitter etc etc..........

Tilltheend99 · 15/10/2021 20:37

They don’t really need to apologise for a small room, kitchen fan noise, emergency light as that is all unavoidable. Maybe if the first room was dirty? I would assume that ‘boutique’ would equal smaller rooms otherwise they would have called themselves a luxury hotel surely! I don’t like light in a room either but would just hang something in front to block it out.

Tilltheend99 · 15/10/2021 20:48

@Polmuggle

(I love the assumption that travel costs are always picked up by a company by the way- I'm public sector and the flight was paid for but not the hotel, parking, other costs).

I'm public sector and would never in a million years be expected to be out of pocket for work. And even I were, wouldn't do it!

This isn’t what you want to hear but you really shouldn’t take this kind of item away with you if you’re concerned about it being stolen.

It's my kids initials given to me by my husband in solid gold with a diamond on each.
Perhaps I should lock it away and never wear it.
I'm in the UK FFS not in a third world dangerous country.

I don’t understand this comment. People don’t steal in the UK?
MrsSkylerWhite · 15/10/2021 20:50

vivainsomnia

Of course you should pay. You stayed. You could have complained sooner and be moved earlier. You didn't.

The fact that you have an issue 2irh sleeping with a light in is really your issue not theirs.

Best time travel with ear plugs and eye mask“

Are you an hotelier (with a crappy hotel)?

Complain, loudly. If no apology and discount forthcoming, post an honest review.
