Huge mass in breast aibu to go to a&e ? **Diagnosis in and treatment underway for the OP** Title edited by MNHQ

Last week I went to the doctors - my right breast has a big mass in it that has appeared in the previous week.
He checked my liver, lymph nodes, so I know what he's thinking, and referred me to the breast clinic under the 14 day rule. Except it isn't 14 days, it's over three weeks before you can be seen. The gp can do nothing to speed things up apparently.
I thought I need to pay for a private mammogram, it's £400. I'm desperate - imagining the worst constantly.
Managed to get a referral sent by the gp to the private hospital, only to be told they're breast clinic has been cancelled for the next three weeks.
Aibu to go to a&e to get some medical advice or wait? The mass is getting bigger and painful each day.
What would you do? Thanks in advance.

@Silkieschickens

Just got ct and mri results and unfortunately there is a mass on the adrenal glands which they think could be stage 4. Also showed weak bones non cancer and scarring they think on lungs which they think is from covid rather than cancer. Another CT soon then 2 week wait to get results.
I'm sorry to read this update. I hope that your team talks about a good treatment plan with you that meets all of your needs.

A&E can't and won't do anything - it's for accidents and emergencies and this isn't either.

I have had the same thing, it was a phyllodes cystosarcoma tumor had it for a year before my mastectomy and I'm perfectly fine. Phyllodes is pretty much the only fast-growing large tumor (if it really is huge and appeared in under 1 week) and it pretty much always starts in benign form, 3 weeks is not long to wait.

I don’t blame anyone for not wanting to read over 600 messages but at least read the OP’s messages.

I hope you’re doing ok @needabitof. Hope the treatment is going well and you’re recovering from the mastectomy. 💐

@Lovemusic33

I have been following since OP first posted and this prompted me to go to my gp, I had been having pain in my left breast for a while. I went to the go yesterday where a nurse checked me, she found 2 lumps but thinks it’s nothing, my pain started shortly after coming off the pill and being sterilised, I have had scares before and been told I just have lumpy boobs. I haven’t been referred for further tests which worried me a little. I’ve been told to take evening primrose oil for a few months and see if it helps. I’m not sure if I should be pushing for further investigation? Can the nurse really tell that my lumps are nothing to worry about just from feeling them?

Thinking of those starting their journey and treatment, I hope all goes well for you Flowers

Please go and ask your GP for a referral to the breast clinic. It will only be worrying you if you don't.
Silkieschickens · 06/12/2021 02:23

Lovemusic I would also recommend getting checked out properly not because your symptoms scream cancer but as I would not be confident the nurse could tell. The breast clinic say they often see women told its fine by GP, I was as well. Hope you get the all clear.

Jibberjabberhutt · 06/12/2021 19:45

@Lovemusic33 I also suggest pushing for a referral. I was referred for similar reasons and quickly saw an amazing breast doctor, who didn’t think it was sinister but sent me for an ultrasound to make sure. Wonderful treatment and they bent over backwards to reassure me. You deserve the same treatment and if I were you I’d demand it.

Muchuseaschocolateteapot · 07/12/2021 14:47

@Lovemusic33 I went to the breast clinic with similar to you a few years ago and the wonderful breast nurse examined me and gave me a leaflet explaining that the ducts around our nipples carry on filling and emptying fluid all the time but as breasts age they can lose their elasticity and the ducts elongate and don’t drain as easily and can become sore, even infected and antibiotics may be needed.

This may not be relevant to you at all and I do suggest that you get checked out properly but thought I would mention this in case it offered any reassurance that not all bumps and pains are sinister, but still scary.

YourenutsmiLord · 07/12/2021 14:54

I think if I was you I would give it a few weeks and if things are not getting better go back to doc with 'worse' pain and push for a mammogram.

In the recent past I had treatment for breast cancer discovered on the routine mammo screening (as I'm over 50) - the lump was impalpable so don't everyone assume there is always a lump. Just wanted to say.

Just read this Silkies. It's so crap and I am so sorry you ate going through all this waiting. Let's hope it's not cancer on the adrenal glands. What a horrible time you are having. ❤️
Silkieschickens · 08/12/2021 15:41

Thanks Lulu Its been very scary but managed to get old hospital to send me May 2018 ct report which shows left adrenal mass of 2.5cms and now 3.5 years later its 3.3cm, I have to discuss with hospital but from what can see online thats a benign growth rate normally, may need surgery or treatment but can wait whilst treat breast cancer hopefully.

@Silkieschickens that is great news. I hope they treat your BC as quickly as possible and you cope well with the treatment. Big hugs

I'm wishing you all the luck in the world op. Hoping the mastectomy is a success xx
