Huge mass in breast aibu to go to a&e ? **Diagnosis in and treatment underway for the OP** Title edited by MNHQ

Last week I went to the doctors - my right breast has a big mass in it that has appeared in the previous week.
He checked my liver, lymph nodes, so I know what he's thinking, and referred me to the breast clinic under the 14 day rule. Except it isn't 14 days, it's over three weeks before you can be seen. The gp can do nothing to speed things up apparently.
I thought I need to pay for a private mammogram, it's £400. I'm desperate - imagining the worst constantly.
Managed to get a referral sent by the gp to the private hospital, only to be told they're breast clinic has been cancelled for the next three weeks.
Aibu to go to a&e to get some medical advice or wait? The mass is getting bigger and painful each day.
What would you do? Thanks in advance.

So sorry to hear this.
I have had breast cancer (lumpectomy/chemo/rads) if you want to talk please feel free to PM me as I totally know what an horrific shock it is.

That said, now the wheels are moving they should move quickly and things will start to get done.

I wish you well xx

You've been through the grist on this and you've been a model of self-advocacy for other women reading your account.

My best wishes for a good outcome from your treatment.

AnotherEmma · 29/10/2021 21:36

@needabitof

I saw the consultant today - it's breast cancer. I will have an mri next week then an operation at the beginning of December, either a lumpectomy or a mastectomy depending on the mri results. Not the news I was hoping for but the care is impressive.
Very sorry to hear this OP Flowers Best of luck with the treatment.
XingMing · 29/10/2021 21:37

Thanks, I missed the OP's last comment in my haste to comfort, but I stand by what I said @TravelLost. I'm six months down the treatment route so absolutely not trivialising her fear.

marykitty · 29/10/2021 21:40

My best wishes to you. Best of luck Flowers

saraclara · 29/10/2021 21:46

Not the update I was hoping for. But I'm very glad that you're feeling confident in the care that you're getting.

All the very best with whatever treatment they decide is right for you. Do take advantage of every bit of support that's out there.

whitehorsesdonotlie · 29/10/2021 21:47

I'm sorry to hear this. I hope you continue to get good care. 💐

BlackSwan · 29/10/2021 21:58

So awful to hear your news. Thank goodness you advocated for yourself to get a diagnosis quickly. One day at a time x

mcmooberry · 29/10/2021 22:07

Sorry to hear this, I haven't commented before but was hoping it was an abscess due to the pain. Hope you get more positive news from the MRI and fully curative treatment.

notanothertakeaway · 29/10/2021 22:07

@BrilloPaddy

My Uncle had a heart attack the night before last - my poor aunt rang for an ambulance at 8pm, he was blue lit into the local county hospital.... and was waiting until 7am to be taken off the ambulance and seen. He's still on an assessment ward waiting to be transferred to the local cardiac centre....... 36 hours on.

A & E isn't the place. They're barely treating life and death cases right now, and certainly not things that can be assessed by a GP. Our surgery can refer you to the AEC unit at our local hospital (Ambulatory Emergency Care) - does yours have something similar? It's generally quicker than A & E.

So sorry to read this x

Been there too. Now living flat, no reconstruction, been through chemo and radiotherapy. Once you are in the system they really look after you. You must be in shock, I know I was for a long time. If you need any practical help feel free to dm me. Best wishes.

3luckystars · 29/10/2021 22:41

Was it an extremely unusual case if they said they only see it once or twice a year? It must be an awful shock.

I just wanted to wish you all the very best with your treatment, and to echo what everyone else said, I’m so sorry about your results.

I’m so glad they are taking care of you now, all the very best x

Doodar · 29/10/2021 22:52

So sorry to hear OP xx

BonnesVacances · 29/10/2021 22:55

I'm sorry to read that. Coincidentally I just started reading a book today that I have sent to a friend for her birthday. It's called Glittering a Turd. It's about a lady who was diagnosed with breast cancer in her early 20s. It has really good reviews, is quite funny and seems like a very positive book. It might help you. Good luck!

JayAlfredPrufrock · 29/10/2021 23:05

Beast cancer care is fucking fabulous.

Seriously, once you are in the system it’s bloody amazing.

Wishing you all the best OP.

I follow Kris on Instagram and she is so amazing. I remember watching the bbc2 programme about her journey at the start and thought she was then too. I've heard really good things about her book.

@needabitof I am so sorry to read your news, but you have the right people behind you to deal with this. Don't forget we are all here for you to rant to too Flowers
