Arrrkid · 14/10/2021 01:10

My 19 Yr old son is in a serious (🙄) relationship with a lovely girl, who I have nothing in common with. Thr relationship has been over a year and she makes him happy, so I want to get her a decent gift. She's quite gothy and has a good job, so buys all her own different clothes, and platform Docs. My son is FLIPPING USELESS. Ideas? I have 2 older sons and a 9yo DD so NO CLUE.
She wears makeup but if I get a load of MAC vouchers will that be too mainstream or ,,??????
Please help!!

Stick the cash in a card.

Keep seeing these bat wing boot decorations in one of my makers’ groups

TheBurmundseyIndustrialEstate · 14/10/2021 01:32

Salt lamps and diffusers selling well at the moment in my store to the alternative crowd.

debucnik · 14/10/2021 01:38

Yep either money in a card or request a wish list.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 14/10/2021 01:41

What would you buy a non-gothy GF?
Seriously, don't try to anticipate her taste. It never goes well. Just get her something nice.

aLilNonnyMouse · 14/10/2021 01:47

If she is a goth then presumably she is really into music. How about offering to pay for tickets to a band gig of her choice for the two of them.

NiceGerbil · 14/10/2021 01:49

Budget?

NiceGerbil · 14/10/2021 01:58

Xmas is a way off.

Number one thing to do. Is to.

Tell your GROWN UP son to spend the next two weeks paying attention to what she wears/ likes. Listen to what she says! I mean FGS 19 and mum is going to do it!

Sounds mean I know and sure your son lovely. But he needs to get the hang of this! Or maybe he will ask you in 20 years time still!!! For his wife of 5 years...

I'm serious. He needs to be the driver ideas etc even if you help which I'm sure you would!

He must know her fave bands! If goth (ish!) then she must seek out clothes etc she likes. Favourite brands etc.

Coming from a 1 yr plus 19yo BF though.

I think cash/ voucher will prob come across not well at all. No thought is it. And cash would be taken really badly. I would have been wtf!

Catflapkitkat · 14/10/2021 02:00

Does she wear MAC? They aren't cruelty free - they sell in mainland China where animal testing in mandatory. It matter to some people.

There is a beautiful coffee table book called Gothic - Dark Glamour. It's about Gothic imagery through art/film/fashion.

Good luck OP

NiceGerbil · 14/10/2021 02:01

Oh got the wrong idea!

What's he getting her? No idea at the mo probs :) I mean it is early!

I got this for DD couple years back went down v well-

www.etsy.com/uk/listing/859885771/adjustable-dragon-ring-silver-ring

There's so much out there! Ask him if she has a fave animal. Paying for a gig for the two of them up to X amount is lovely but pricey?

Get him to get some info Grin

NameChangeNameShange · 14/10/2021 02:05

If you try to guess her taste you'll likely get it wrong, but if you give money in a card (and especially if everyone else gets gifts) that's kinda says you don't like/approve/know her.

So take a step back what are your go to gifts for people hard to buy?

chocolate - some less obvious options here www.independent.co.uk/extras/indybest/food-drink/chocolate/best-luxury-chocolate-boxes-a7356026.html%3famp

candle - check out somewhere like uncommon gifts for tarot card ones, literature like Edgar Allen Poe, or whatever fits or Selfridges do some gorgeous black and neon colour ones

fingerless black cashmere gloves and beanie/scarf

NiceGerbil · 14/10/2021 02:06

Etsy gift voucher might work.

I'm more worried about what sort of presents your son hands over!

redtshirt50 · 14/10/2021 02:12

Yes - defo be wary of buying makeup etc testing on animals.

Is she into gaming? Maybe a game if she is.

Some hair dye? Nail art kit? Gig tickets are a good idea if you can afford them, or something like tickets to fright night at thorpe park.

A night in a hotel somewhere for them for a weekend?

House plants?

Highflyingadored · 14/10/2021 02:34

Hotel stay for them in Camden?

I would steer away from clothes unless your son can give you a clear idea... or a voucher for EMP clothing. If you want something physical your son may be able to direct you to something from EMP, favourite band tshirt or they do really cool goth style disney clothing

Some nice wine or bottle of spirit?

For those that saying cash is thoughtless.... my in laws have always given us all cash for birthdays and Christmas so we can buy what we want and not clog our houses with un necessary things....

MalteseBubs · 14/10/2021 02:40

I second a voucher for EMP clothing

MalteseBubs · 14/10/2021 02:41

Or cold hard cash

Clarinet53 · 14/10/2021 02:50

Look up Emily Boo on YouTube. Last week she did a series of 5 videos of alternative online shops.

There are stores descriptions and links under the videos.

All sorts from cruelty free makeup to sustainable slow fashion.

As above do some beautiful alternative silver jewellery which wouldn't break the bank.

mobear · 14/10/2021 02:54

A Bella Freud candle.

Slothkin · 14/10/2021 03:16

A ticket for a bat sanctuary visit might go down well (she says, as a mostly reformed teen goth and bat fan) - if you’d like to PM me your area I’ll see if I know anyone nearabouts!

BookFiend4Life · 14/10/2021 03:58

What about a nice dark nail polish from Butter london and a "dark" perfume like midnight fleur from Nest? Agree with others, chocolate and a nice scented candle are always in style. Maybe a nice cashmere throw in a pretty dark color? Airbnb voucher, tix to a neat art exhibit? I'm sure you'll come up with something great, and making her feel welcome will be the best gift for both of them.

HardStaringBearFromDarkestPeru · 14/10/2021 05:16

Moonmaiden gothic clothing online is quite good!

Wifflywafflywoo · 14/10/2021 07:26

Same thing here for my brother's fiancee. I do a gift box of Lush stuff, Kraft ale cans in weird flavours (she loves anything sweet like bubblegum beer), posh black sparkly nail polish, elbow length knitted mittens with the finger flap thing, a bauble for their tree and some vegan choccy.

Firefliesinabottle · 14/10/2021 08:06

Very sweet of you to take into account her personal style, a few ideas:

  • Crystals/Crystal jewellery
  • incense sticks and a burner
  • maybe find out her fave band and buy a band tee/hoodie
  • tarot cards
  • make up brushes
  • skin care bits, face masks etc
  • Some fun style socks
  • alcohol!

A good website for check out is Killstar, they do some fab bits!

Iheartmysmart · 14/10/2021 08:17

Alchemy Gothic do some nice jewellery if she’s in to that. I’ve got a few of their pieces and they are lovely. As also mentioned, an EMP voucher would also be welcomed by this ageing goth!

MrsTulipTattsyrup · 14/10/2021 08:40

I wouldn’t try to choose something you think will be to her taste because it’s so easy to get it just a bit wrong.

Instead I’d go for an Etsy voucher, or, if you know where she likes to buy her clothes, a voucher there. I have a lovely independent fashion shop locally which is a one-off and run by the owner, and even she does gift vouchers.

It’s a bit more personal than cash and shows you’ve thought about what she’d like.

But I’d leave it till closer to Christmas - teenage relationships have a habit of not lasting!
