AIBU to think that bigger ladies still want to wear vests and T-shirts?

I'm a size 22, and desperately looking for nice vest tops and T-shirts. Tonight I Googled 'plus size ladies vest tops' and a company called Principals came up with a photo of a vest top in what looked like a lovely colour. I clicked straight through, thinking 'I'll have one of those to start off', then when I saw what an AMAZING selection of colours they had available, and also noticed that they appear to have good 'green' credentials, I was all set to place a massive order for tops in lots of exciting, different colours. I then looked at the size chart, only to find that the biggest size they make is an 18 - 20. My heart sank, I was SO disappointed. So am I being unreasonable in thinking that there are lots of other bigger ladies, who still want to buy vests and T's, and if so, would you be ready to bombard this company and ask them not to leave us out?

My all means contact them so they know there is demand for their products in larger sizes but I imagine it costs them more for each size they produce and they have made a business decision which sizes to stock. Trying to orchestrate an email bombardment of this one company seems a little OTT though.

I shopped at Principles for years for my clothes for work as they had a great petite range. There are countless shops that don't sell any petite clothes. So I don't shop at those places. Well, more I can't, as the clothes don't fit me.

You can't expect every shop to cater to every person's needs,

Of course you are being unreasonable. Surely absolutely every person in the country can't get clothes at every shop in the country. Different shops cater for different customers. Otherwise there would be just one giant shop for everyone.

spotcheck · 13/10/2021 07:22

But OP
Surely you have shopped before? And know where you can reliably find your size?

Bluntness100 · 13/10/2021 07:24

What an odd thread, plenty of places sell these, why would you try one and then ask the public to harass them?

seaandsandcastles · 13/10/2021 07:35

I’m a size 4-6, but the smallest they do is 8. I’m not going to complain because I know I’m out of the average size, so it’s going to be harder to find clothes.

You find this at both ends of the spectrum - nobody is deliberately leaving out bigger women while catering to all other sizes.

dottiedodah · 13/10/2021 07:52

Monsoon do s 22 .They are also on Ebay . Lots to choose from there .

CheapFoodShits · 13/10/2021 07:59

I used to work for Principles. They went into liquidation and are now only available in Debenhams stores and on the Debenhams website. Their range is tiny now because they don't have their own stores/website anymore and are just a concession brand now. Although, the largest size we used to carry was a 20. But there are many high street shops that don't go above a 20. There are also many shops that do. And it's really not like finding a size 22 t-shirt is akin to finding a needle in a haystack nowadays.

tickledtiger · 13/10/2021 08:38

M&S I just looked they do bigger sizes!

Pythonista · 13/10/2021 08:40

Bombarding them will have no effect. They will have done their research and have deemed it not economical to do plus sizes.

There are plenty of places to get t shirts if you are larger

Wazzzzzzzup · 13/10/2021 08:42

Debenhams is Boohoo 🤢
MrsClatterbuck · 13/10/2021 10:31

M&S go up to size 24 and in some ranges a 28

CheapFoodShits · 13/10/2021 11:05

Not sure why that's relevant. I was explaining why Principles only has a small range now, not suggesting OP will find her size in Debenhams.

esloquehay · 13/10/2021 11:08

Weird AF thread.
Did you just post to save you the trouble of googling other brands, as PPs have done your donkey work for you.

RedCarsGoFaster · 13/10/2021 11:10

I buy all my vest tops in Asda and Tesco. I'm a 22. I live in vests and kimono jackets all year round.

However, lots of people here are missing the point - you can indeed buy plain, badly made, non-sustainable, sweatshop vest tops on Amazon for those of us who are larger.

What is harder to find is something colourful, well made, properly fitted, considered, fashionable, flattering, sustainable, non-sweat shop clothing including vest tops.

"Hidden" Boohoo is relevant to lots of us. Well, actually yeah, to most it is only when it hits newspapers every few years...
Guetzlibache · 13/10/2021 12:23

Wouldnt this be a good reason to maybe loose weight?I used to smoke 40 fags a day,but they only came in 20 in a box and I was annoyed, they didnt sell packets of 40 fags.I hope you find your perfect vest in the size you want to.

RedCarsGoFaster · 13/10/2021 12:26

Dixiechickonhols · 13/10/2021 12:33

I thought principles had gone out of business.
Some stores cater for mainstream sizes, some plus size, some for both.
M & S, next or supermarkets, tk maxx, yours clothing will stock larger.
I used to be sent catalogues for hush, sosander etc total waste as I was a size 18/20. It was one of my motivations to lose weight to be able to buy from shops like that. Now a 10/12 I just ignore plus size stuff I get sent.
I personally found the specialist plus size ranges better when I was bigger as it was cut to fit rather than just a bigger size of smaller garment if that makes sense.

gogohm · 13/10/2021 12:40

Principals and evans used to be the same company group, the later catered for larger sizes

Cocomarine · 13/10/2021 12:42

YABU.
Ridiculously so.
Asking people to bombard one company who already actually do a size 20 anyway?
You can’t expect all shops to sell all sizes.
There are loads of stockists in the sizes you want.

melj1213 · 13/10/2021 12:55

YABVU

I am a size 24 and have been in the plus size ranges for a long time. There are hundreds of retailers who stock size 22 + both in traditional brick and mortar stores and online retailers.

You did one Google search and landed on a single store that doesn't go up to your size. This one store doesn't have a plus size range, get over it and shop in one that does.

Pigeonpocket · 13/10/2021 13:03

YABU
I understand it's disappointing when you find something you like and they don't do your size, it happens to me a lot with shoes.

However, companies don't have to cater for everyone. Some brands have wider size ranges than others based on their target market and what will sell, and what they can afford to invest in. Making plus size clothes isn't as simple as scaling up from the clothes they design in a smaller size, the drafting needs to be done for a completely different body shape. It takes time and money. That's why specialist plus size shops exist.

Sometimes you just have to accept that not everything can be for everyone.
