School booze raffle

I don’t usually post but this really got to me.

My daughter’s CoE primary sent out an email saying the children can come in normal clothes next Friday if they give a bottle of booze for the “booze barrow raffle”

They have defended this because the raffle is for adults and the school needs money,

but I still think it sets such a poor example to the kids. Talk about making alcohol fun.

AIBU? Or is this wrong on so many levels?

Unclench.

ShepherdMoons · 12/10/2021 14:05

It's quite normal at our CofE school!

MrzClaus · 12/10/2021 14:06

YABU.

Unless of course, the school are planning on the kids drinking the booze and doing barrow races?

BlusteryLake · 12/10/2021 14:06

This is really common as a fundraiser. Adults drink alcohol, most of them responsibly. I don't think that's a bad message.

WombatStewForTea · 12/10/2021 14:07

We do this at our school...it makes a fortune!! School budgets are insanely tight so don't be that person. We also do a kids bottle stall..

Soubriquet · 12/10/2021 14:09

I see where you’re coming from. I’m teetotal. I don’t drink at all. Don’t enjoy the taste, don’t enjoy the hangover. I don’t think alcohol should be promoted around children either but it’s normal now

However, you don’t need to actually the raffle tickets I guess.

DreadingItBadly · 12/10/2021 14:10

We always had a bottle tombola at school fairs, never specifically "Booze tombola" though. I would unashamedly send my DC with a bottle of soft drink or cordial. I wouldn't like to be told to donate wine which can be quite expensive for many (and you wouldn't want to end up with a table-full of £4.49 wine at the Christmas fair).

residentkaleidoscope · 12/10/2021 14:10

Completely normal for my childrens school.

User5827372728 · 12/10/2021 14:11

Christians drink! Jesus said do this is remembrance of me

LittleLottieChaos · 12/10/2021 14:12

Why can’t it just be ‘drinks’ raffle… the use of the word ‘booze’ is actually gross.

And turned water into wine.
HarrietsChariot · 12/10/2021 14:14

YABVU, drinking is perfectly normal behaviour. It's not as if they're giving the children alcohol FFS.

User5827372728 · 12/10/2021 14:15

@CaptainMyCaptain

Wish I could do that!

EatYourVegetables · 12/10/2021 14:17

You sound fun.

0palescent · 12/10/2021 14:17

There are numerous reasons people wouldn't want to buy alcohol. Religious, financial, poor relationship with alcohol and not having it in the house...

I wouldn't care about kids bringing a bottle in, but not every parent wants to or can afford to do this.

gogohm · 12/10/2021 14:18

My kids first school even held a beer festival, made £6k! Schools need the money

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 12/10/2021 14:18

Its discriminating against low income families. Even a cheap bottle of wine is a few pounds, and if there's several children in a family...

My DDs school did similar but it was for gifts for the the tombola, which could easily be got at poundland or even cheaper.

Soubriquet · 12/10/2021 14:19

Didn’t think of the price!! Imagine how much it would cost if you had 3 or 4 kids at the same school. Eeeek

Nahhh · 12/10/2021 14:19

I’m part of our school PTA, fundraising can be tricky and schools are struggling. My issue with this would be the cost of providing a bottle of booze, especially for larger families. I couldn’t get uptight about kids knowing their parents drink alcohol though.

Ginisatonic · 12/10/2021 14:21

Our DDs C of E school always had a bottle tombola but alcohol wasn’t specified. It was mostly wine though. Usually the same bottles that no one wanted being regularly recycled.

NerrSnerr · 12/10/2021 14:21

Most non uniform days cost £1 at my children's school (although they'd be fine if you couldn't afford it). You could get a pack of 4 bottles of beer or alcopop for £3.50 or so. That's what I'd do if I had multiple children (or just send one bigger bottle of beer or cheap wine between them ally
LittleGwyneth · 12/10/2021 14:22

Alcohol is fun.

They probably shouldn't let the kids drink though. At least not the hard stuff. Think of the mess.

idontlikealdi · 12/10/2021 14:27

The bottle stall and barrow of bottles at our school has all sorts in it. I won salad cream one year.

It's the biggest money spinner.

CopperLily · 12/10/2021 14:29

Twice a year we did this for school fairs. The same crappy bottles were given over and over again and I did it myself! Won a bottle of utter rubbish on the tombola in summer and donated it at Christmas.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 12/10/2021 14:31

Honestly?

Are you always the fun police?

The bottle tombola etc usually makes the most money at a fair. It's a great way to raise cash to buy things your child will enjoy. Are you joining the PTA to help them fundraise or just criticising from the sidelines while doing fuck all else??

I think I know the answer.
