School booze raffle

I don’t usually post but this really got to me.

My daughter’s CoE primary sent out an email saying the children can come in normal clothes next Friday if they give a bottle of booze for the “booze barrow raffle”

They have defended this because the raffle is for adults and the school needs money,

but I still think it sets such a poor example to the kids. Talk about making alcohol fun.

AIBU? Or is this wrong on so many levels?

DS's primary school had to stop this because of a parent like you. Lost loads of money as adults didn't go that much on the tombola. Luckily the child left and we went merrily back to see who could win the booze.

Send in non alcoholic. Schools will be aware of parents who cannot afford and will probably have been in touch

fuckitbucket16 · 12/10/2021 14:33

That sounds awesome. Wish our school did that. 😂

AnnaSW1 · 12/10/2021 14:36

I don't have an issue with it

suspiria777 · 12/10/2021 14:36

It's no more "wrong on so many levels" or "a terrible example for the kids" than doing a bake sale or coffee morning. Unless you want to stop those too because they glorify binge eating, cause diabetes and encourage excessive energy drink usage?

Adults are allowed to buy alcohol.

PiesNotGuys · 12/10/2021 14:37

Ha. Our school is licensed. The school sells booze (mulled wine) at the Christmas fair, there is an actual stocked bottle and can bar at the summer fair and for school performances. PTA events sell wine and beer. There’s no booze at the harvest festival but that’s probably because we are all still drunk from the school-run Oktoberfest.

YABU!

RB68 · 12/10/2021 14:44

The raffle is no problem - making the kids take it in is another matter altogether and imv inappropriate

RB68 · 12/10/2021 14:44

Just a thought - what if it were tobacco is that OK

Saucery · 12/10/2021 14:47

Never seen a FagBola so that seems a silly bit of whataboutery.
Whywonttheyhelpme · 12/10/2021 14:49

Mood hoover.

I bet you are fun at parties.

Franklyfrost · 12/10/2021 14:50

Alcohol is fun. (In moderation).

Maybe you could do a competing cabbage raffle to set a good example?

notacooldad · 12/10/2021 14:50

the use of the word ‘booze’ is actually gross
Are you joking!😂😂😂
Standing on a slug is gross,
An old slang word for alcohol isn't!

MagnoliaBeige · 12/10/2021 14:54

The alcohol aspect wouldn’t bother me. The message to kids of “you can’t participate if you don’t bring in something” would - not all families can afford to donate a bottle and even if the families are told discreetly not to worry, you’re still making those kids aware they’re different to normal.

Igmum · 12/10/2021 14:55

OP does your DD go to my DD's old school? (Though in fairness they do it as a bottle tombola and some people send in shampoo or bubble bath)

Neonplant · 12/10/2021 14:56

Sorry I don't believe anyone is this up tight!

Anonymice1 · 12/10/2021 14:57

By saying they can come wearing normal clothes it does single out the children of those parents who perhaps can’t afford it.

labazslovesliving · 12/10/2021 14:59

may be above a lot of peoples budget I think it better to say a bottle raffle or drinks raffle then people can donate as they see fit. btw is it not dangerous to send drinks with children who perhaps make their own way to school without adults as they may be having a crafty drink?

MyCatEatsPrawnCrackers · 12/10/2021 15:01

We used to do this in our (RC) Primary but it didn't have to be alcohol, just a bottle for the bottle stall at the Christmas Fayre. Some kids used to bring in bottles of ketchup or lemonade etc I remember one parent complaining to me because her son hadn't been allowed to drink the pop that he'd bought in Confused

BlusteryLake · 12/10/2021 15:01

@Saucery FagBola 😂😂. I agree though, cigarettes are not allowed to be advertised nor sold on open supermarket shelves, alcohol is.

Woeismethischristmas · 12/10/2021 15:03

We have a bottle stall everything from whiskey to washing up liquid.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 12/10/2021 15:03

Alcohol IS fun!

Sunshineandflipflops · 12/10/2021 15:04

I wouldn't have a problem with this but being in a relationship with a recovering alcoholic who wouldn't want to buy or be in possession of alcohol, I think there should be an alternative that you can send your child in with in such cases.

hangrylady · 12/10/2021 15:05

Fun police alert. Get a grip.

Fraine · 12/10/2021 15:09

@User5827372728

Christians drink! Jesus said do this is remembrance of me
What about those who don’t drink? Teetotal? And Muslims?
SickAndTiredAgain · 12/10/2021 15:09

I wouldn’t have an issue with a booze raffle. I don’t like the fact that children who don’t bring a bottle in have to come in school uniform, while those that do, don’t.
