My bloods always come back showing that I’m ferritin deficient anaemic. I’ve just started taking ferrous fumerate. I feel unbelievably exhausted all the time, my legs ache when I walk upstairs as if I’ve just climbed a mountain. My arms ache if I pick up anything even slightly heavy, my muscles in my rib cage ache all the time. My B12 always come back at low side of normal but because it’s in the “normal” range they won’t treat it. I have lots of B12 deficiency symptoms - my hair is falling out, my skin itches, my memory has gone to shit and I ache and have pain twitches everywhere. DR says that is all down to the ferritin deficiency but I’m dubious -

WIBU to buy B12 tablets off Amazon? As in, will I be wasting my money?

Injections are so much better

Mybalconyiscracking · 11/10/2021 07:26

Don’t think you have too much to lose by trying them.

SeaHollyDaiz · 11/10/2021 07:26

Have had b12 deficiency, it was horrendous, felt so much better when it was corrected, but it took a while. Tablets worked for me, but it's absorbing the b12 that's a problem for some people so they need injections.

Yes, worth a try I think but check it's a reputable brand.

Got no chance of getting the injections - dr won’t even give me tablets

Would getting them privately be an option?

hamstersarse · 11/10/2021 07:29

Eat some liver regularly

It is an intense hit of B12 delivered in a way your body can absorb.

To inject myself?

You can pay for them to be done by someone, have a goigle

Fullofpudding · 11/10/2021 07:31

My local beauty clinics give injections for about £20.

WeatherwaxOn · 11/10/2021 07:32

YABU to buy anything from Amazon.

However, you can get plenty of vitamin B supplements at health food shops. Ideally, push for a second opinion as another Dr might have some better advice, e.g. some dieteay changes, to help with Vit B absorption.

FellInLoveWithABanana · 11/10/2021 07:34

Injections are about £30 from the pharmacy

SilverGlassHare · 11/10/2021 07:41

Lloyds pharmacy does them but I believe you have to be diagnosed as b12 deficient before they’ll start doing them so that’s not much use. Some beauty salons do them too, alongside Botox and fillers etc - I’d be slightly wary of this though. You can also buy b12 yourself and inject it - last time I looked into this was prebrexit though so I don’t know if it’s miles more difficult or expensive these days.

SpindleWhirl · 11/10/2021 07:41

If you do buy online, have a look at the sub-lingual ones (under the tongue) in a form that is well absorbed.

AmongUs · 11/10/2021 07:44

There is a B12 spray BetterYou do. Hope you find a solution to resolve symptoms

Onedaylikethis21 · 11/10/2021 07:45

Get some Ferroglobin liquid from the chemist- it’s really good stuff!! Unless you do actually need the injection- I am a vegan and take ferroglobin from time to time when I feel like I need a boost.

Run4it2 · 11/10/2021 08:00

I have low b12 but not low enough for injections. I take the hightest strength b12 from Holland and barrett (40000 times the recommended daily dose) as I have problems absorbing it. I'm also permanently on the replacement does for iron as i dont absorb that properly either. I have annual bloods to make sure that this remains appropriate. I have Gilbert's syndrome a(No biggie, but gives problems with absorption, and i sometimes have excessive tiredness). Might be worth asking your doctor to check for this next time you're having bloods done.

Thethuthinang · 11/10/2021 08:02

Second the note above to get the absorbable ones. I get something I spray under my tongue.

DeathMetalMum · 11/10/2021 08:05

You can buy b12 tablets over the counter. I'd go and speak to your local pharmacy.

chipsandpeas · 11/10/2021 09:29

you can also buy b12 tablets in the likes of b&m and home bargains and they are pretty cheap as well

FAQs · 11/10/2021 09:32

My local coop pharmacy sells the same tablets for £1.40! They showed me when I took my £9 subscription in to pick up my supply.

sweetkitty · 11/10/2021 09:34

Vitamin B12 wake up group on Facebook

The best thing I ever did, join read everything you can, I’ve taken B12 tablets for years but think they’ve done nothing, diagnosed fibromyalgia but think it might be B12 deficiency and I just can’t absorb it. Started self-injecting and taking the co-factors recommended on the site, it’s early days for me but read the testimonies.

SpindleWhirl · 11/10/2021 10:03

The problem for a lot of people is that they simply don't absorb enough B12 in their gut, so it doesn't really matter what they eat or what tablets they swallow.

This is why injections are essential for some people, and others who are 'borderline' go for high-strength sub-lingual tablets, lozenges or sprays.

To complicate matters more, there are different types of B12, and Methylcobalamin seems to the best regarded for absorption and effects.

I'll attempt to attach a picture of such a product, available online. Just to be clear - I had to do my own research on this when I started showing low B12 in my blood tests but my GP wasn't interested in treating it, and I was feeling extremely fatigued, what with one (autoimmune) thing and another. I'd rather not have to research my own health - and ill-health - issues, but that's where we are.

I'm a vegetarian and have been B9 and B13 deficient in the past, just be careful of the ingredients of the vitamin you take, my tablets contained a reasonably high Cobalt content which started a severe allergic reaction in me. I now can't have anything containing Cobalt or Nickel touching my skin (and it's in much more than you would ever think!)

Feedingthebirds1 · 11/10/2021 11:11

I recommend Solgar, which are sublingual. The B12 is absorbed through the skin under the tongue, rather than going straight into the stomach where little is absorbed.

Some beauty salons offer the injections, have a Google for your local area. Hope you feel better soon OP
