To take vitamin b12 tablets from Amazon?

My bloods always come back showing that I’m ferritin deficient anaemic. I’ve just started taking ferrous fumerate. I feel unbelievably exhausted all the time, my legs ache when I walk upstairs as if I’ve just climbed a mountain. My arms ache if I pick up anything even slightly heavy, my muscles in my rib cage ache all the time. My B12 always come back at low side of normal but because it’s in the “normal” range they won’t treat it. I have lots of B12 deficiency symptoms - my hair is falling out, my skin itches, my memory has gone to shit and I ache and have pain twitches everywhere. DR says that is all down to the ferritin deficiency but I’m dubious -

WIBU to buy B12 tablets off Amazon? As in, will I be wasting my money?

Jarrow B12 from Amazon but make sure you’re also taking folate NOT folic acid, you need one to absorb the other but you need a methylated form called methlefolate as some people can’t utilise non methylated folic acid

SunSparkle · 11/10/2021 11:30

I’d also look at changing your iron supplement from fumerate to bisglycinate as it’s better absorbed and less gastro symptoms.

Wegobshite · 11/10/2021 12:09

Sprays or injections are better
If you have any type of gastric problem
such as gallstones ulcers general digestive issues you may find that taking tablets are are good as taking M & M 😂

Wegobshite · 11/10/2021 12:10

I self inject B12 myself
I get it from Germany cost 7.50 euros for 10vials so I normally buy 30 as the P&P is the same
I’m on a B12 group where pretty much everyone will do it themselves

sweetkitty · 11/10/2021 12:16

@Wegobshite we are probably on the same site. I got mine from Germany too am hoping it makes a difference to my health.

SingingInTheShitHouse · 11/10/2021 12:29

Lifeinthescratcher
Injections are so much better
Got no chance of getting the injections - dr won’t even give me tablets

I agree injections are much better, but disagree that yiu can't get B12 injections. I'd recommend Tracy Wittys B12 website & Pat Kormics Facebook that is linked in there if you want to fight this. I fought & won for my daughter & myself with their help.

If you don't have the energy to fight, you can go to a lot of beauty salons & clinics & have private B12 injections for around £35 each last time I looked. It's important to have your first B12 injection done in a clinical setting, just incase of a rare allergic reaction to the jab. Once you've had one though, it's cheap & easy to self inject B12, which can be bought from places like Versandapo & Amazon De (both in Germany). Many of us with diagnosis & GP treatment still need to do this as the amount of NHS B12 we get isn't enough to keep us going

Make sure you learn about co factor supplements too, again information is available on the site & group mentioned above. This is very important too as B12 can't work properly without optimal levels of certain other vitamins & minerals

RockinHorseShit · 11/10/2021 12:31

Meant to add, I'd recommend pushing for diagnosis though, as there's been several incidents over the years since diagnosis where it was important that medical staff knew me & DD had PA, surgery for example

Wegobshite · 11/10/2021 12:32

@sweetkitty
It made a massive difference for me
That and taking Vitamin D spray

Oh God OP get on Amazon choose the same day and buy the feckers, then take one immediately every day. You need them!!
Cheesepuff1 · 11/10/2021 12:50

The "better You b12" sprays are better than tablets. makes a much quicker difference when my levels are low. I take that and the iron one.

TuftyMarmoset · 11/10/2021 12:59

If you can absorb it via a non injection route then definitely do so because the injections hurt more than any other injection I’ve had in my life!

Itsnotallaboutyoubaby · 11/10/2021 13:05

I have the better you ones. I’ve got the multivitamin, vitamin d spray and b12 spray. Came in a bundle for £20. Not been taking them long enough to notice an effect yet.

Pinkprawns · 11/10/2021 14:13

@Feedingthebirds1

I recommend Solgar, which are sublingual. The B12 is absorbed through the skin under the tongue, rather than going straight into the stomach where little is absorbed.

I second this, solgar are an excellent brand.

GP blood tests are actually not that sensitive and the 'normal' range is ridiculous. Would recommend paying for Thriva blood tests.

Canii · 11/10/2021 14:15

PLEASE DO NOT BUY MEDICINE FROM AMAZON. Their quality control is shocking.

CalmDownBoris72 · 11/10/2021 14:16

I would recommend a spray rather than tablets as it gets absorbed through the mouth as opposed to stomach.

Do you eat meat and dairy products? If yes then it’s likely you have an absorption issue so tablets won’t work anyway as it’s the same issue. If it’s diet then supplements will probably help.

mustlovegin · 11/10/2021 16:10

OneFlewOverTheOwlsNest this will be long, so please bear with me

You first need to understand why your ferritin and B12 levels are low

It could be something like Coeliac preventing adequate absorption or Hashimoto's (autoimmune thyroid disease)

You can ask your GP to run these tests (or others as suggested upthread) but bear in mind that initial NHS testing is too basic. It would be better if you could take them privately (e.g., for Coeliac you need to test at least 6 parameters while on the NHS they initially test 2 before referring you to a specialist)

If you can't identify any absorption issues, you need to look into your diet. Liver (you can make your own chicken liver pate), beef, duck, venison or ostrich are excellent sources of iron and B vitamins. The darker the meat the better (if this becomes too much budget wise lamb or pork mince will help) Try not to have it together with dairy and have some vitamin C (e.g. an orange, tangerine, or kiwi for dessert) to aid absorption. You need to be consistent and have these foods often (in my experience B12 is quicker to go up than ferritin)

A B complex is usually recommended rather than a single B vitamin

Supplements are tricky and many people cannot absorb them well. I agree that liquid and sublingual forms are usually better absorbed than tablets.

In relation to your question, Amazon probably wouldn't be my first choice. Try Boots, Superdrug or any pharmacy, they are quite inexpensive. Some supermarkets carry their own brands also.

If you do order from Amazon, I would make sure Amazon is the seller (to make sure the product is not fake) or do a thorough research on the marketplace vendor to ensure they are reputable (e.g. they are a pharmacy, laboratory, etc)

mustlovegin · 11/10/2021 22:04

These are the Boots tablets OP. I would say they are affordable at £3.30 for 90 days supply
