Mattress outside a house. Pissing me off.

But why? It makes no difference to me. It's not even on my street. They aren't my neighbours.

Yes it irks me every day when I drive past it.

It's been leant up against their fence for weeks and weeks and now a washing machine has joined it.

Reminds me of Shameless.

I do live 'here' so about 2 mins walk from them.

Surely they're waiting on a bulky pickup?

Bearyhumcrack · 10/10/2021 15:48

Report it on the FixMyStreet app.

This.

There's an app?!

Been trying to get rid of a mattress, it's over a month for council collection round here. I agree keeping it outside is a bit grim, but paying someone to remove it privately is also pretty expensive (£35+). You're not wrong, but the wait time to get rid of big things is long at the moment

Mamamia7962 · 10/10/2021 15:50

Report it to the council as fly tipping on their website and they will come and collect it.

Fair enough but they have a big garden they could put it in.

Also the council won’t take a mattress if it’s wet. It’s supposed to be covered in plastic sheeting.

WildRosie · 10/10/2021 15:56

I used a private waste disposal firm to take away an old mattress earlier this year. Cost £20.00.

It will be frigging soaking

Do you not pay for council uplifts down south? It’s like £30 in my local authority area (in Scotland)

Mamamia7962 · 10/10/2021 15:59

Our council will take mattresses without a plastic cover but you have to ring them first to arrange a collection date and only put it out the night before.

Klac30 · 10/10/2021 15:59

Could be waiting for a council collection. Could be waiting for the opportunity to take it to the tip. I get that it's unsightly buy can't control what others are doing! Most of my neighbours see great buy there's a house near me with stuff built up down the side of the house that obviously needs to go the tip - but is piled quite neatly at the side of their house 😅😅

Saying this, my neighbours back garden is like a junk yard. I can't really see it from my gatden as a high fence but can see it out my bedroom window! I do worry that it might encourage vermin but 🤷‍♀️

Mamamia7962 · 10/10/2021 16:01

MelKarn - Yes we have to pay, south east, it's something like £25 for 4 items.

dementedpixie · 10/10/2021 16:01

I'm in Scotland and a special uplift through the council costs £35. Maybe they can't afford to get it removed

This. Good luck! It would piss me off too. Makes you feel like you live in a dump
dementedpixie · 10/10/2021 16:12

Is it on their property or outside it?

Idontlike · 10/10/2021 16:15

But they shouldn’t just dump it on the street. Even if they have to cut it into bits, to get it in a car piece by piece to the local house hold recycling centre, it shouldn’t just be dumped.
dementedpixie · 10/10/2021 16:17

Is it on the street or in their garden? OP says its leaning against the fence but doesn't say whether it's inside or outside the boundary of their property

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 10/10/2021 16:21

I quite often report random flytips to our council, and they generally come out within the same week. I just hate seeing stuff left around.

Plump82 · 10/10/2021 16:22

Our council won't touch anything that's dumped on a bit of land next to my flat because it's classed as private proper. Which reminds me, I was wanting to see who actually owns it. But OP I agree, it's so unsightly and I bet anything it's not waiting for an uplift. People just don't give a shit. My neighbours constantly dump things and after months of it being there I end up breaking it down ( if possible) and putting it in their wheelie bin! Appreciate you can't do that with a mattress.

Dojacatpaws · 10/10/2021 16:22

There are always little corners round where I live where people just leave their shit, it's horrible

bellabasset · 10/10/2021 16:25

I think its £25 here for 4 items, neighbour and I shared the cost for 2 items each. Once one person leaves rubbish it encourages others.

My pet bug is those awful tarpaulin type recycling bags with used plastic trays, food and drink cans etc left all over the place...........

Somanysocks · 10/10/2021 16:27

Oh I read the thread title and thought you were talking about my next door neighbours, they've just moved in but the previous owners left loads of old furniture on the drive, including a mattress that has fallen over and is on the pavement a bit.

It looks really awful and cannot understand why they didn't get on to their solicitors.
