Misophonia is…

…wanting to punch your fist through the wall when you can hear someone eating out of a crinkly packet, NOT getting angry when your neighbour is playing music next door and you can hear it. This term seems to be thoroughly misunderstood.

TAAT?

CristosBreakfastPie · 10/10/2021 00:53

It is very popular on mumsnet. Along with limerance. And Bartholin’s cysts.

ABitOfAShitShow · 10/10/2021 00:53

Agree. I have it. I, too, get annoyed about the other stuff but it’s not my misophonia. Crinkly packets, rustling, chewing, repetitive sounds including clocks ticking, foot tapping, etc. destroy me in quite a special way rather than causing general irritation.

What I do find odd is that I want to punch the wall when I can hear people chewing but if a puppy is munching loudly, I’m fine. But then…puppies. Grin

everythingbackbutyou · 10/10/2021 01:03

@ABitOfAShitShow, exactly. I am aware that the seething rage is an overreaction but utterly overwhelming.

@Pythonista, not that I know of. Just 'inspired' by the jaw clenching sound of my son eating out of a packet of goldfish crackers...

I know what you mean - we have Siamese cats and can hear them eating from a completely different room (they have disgusting manners unlike our moggy who eats nicely) yet somehow that isn't annoying.

Someone eating a packet of crisps makes me murderous Grin

DressBitch · 10/10/2021 02:38

For me it's breathing. Unless it's my son.

Even my own breathing pushes me over the edge!

BlackeyedSusan · 10/10/2021 03:15

I was fine when the kids were young too. Adults though.....

And don’t forget emetophobia, suffered by around 80% of MNers; presumably diagnosed by a psychiatrist/psychologist they way they assert it with such confidence.

Couldn’t possibly just be that they - like everyone else - find vomit disgusting because it stinks

LowbrowVictoriana · 10/10/2021 04:06

And if your MIL or SIL is a bit self-centred then they have narcissistic personality disorder Hmm

LowbrowVictoriana · 10/10/2021 04:10

Oh, and casual declarations of OCD (because someone is tidy) make me murderous. My DD has OCD (yes, properly diagnosed) so badly that she is medicated and receives DLA because of it. And she’s not even remotely tidy.

Similarly, I can't stand the sound of someone snoring at any volume, even in the next room, but I'm fine with my dog snoring loudly right next to me!

OP, I very much do have misophonia and hearing other peoples music/music from an unknown source is my biggest trigger. So I think YABU to think you can tell other people what their condition should and shouldn't be.
CorrBlimeyGG · 10/10/2021 09:21

Misophonia is very much unique to the individual, everyone will have different triggers. Also the sound sources can be very specific, one person's noises can make you lose it whereas they'll be manageable from someone else.

galacticpixels · 10/10/2021 09:32

I have misophonia and have since I was around 10 years old. I get upset and anxious hearing people breathe loudly, eat, sniffing, tapping fingers/feet. But I do also get triggered by noises such as music when I don't know the source!

So for example, I live in an apartment. If my upstairs neighbour is using a hammer, that doesn't really bother me. But if I can hear the thumping of music coming from somewhere in the building, I get the same intense anxiety and anger that I get when someone is chewing loudly. I will be sitting there blasting my own music in my ears to try to drown it out, or often I'll have to leave the apartment building and go for a walk to get away.

My partner gets annoyed by the music but his reaction is nothing like what happens to me.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 10/10/2021 09:33

Mysophonia is nearly crashing the car when someone is eating crisps in the back seat because the noise of the crops packet feels like someone stabbing needles in the back of my head.

An actual physical pain.

Fucking horrible.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 10/10/2021 09:34

Baaaad spellings there, oops!

rainbowmash · 10/10/2021 09:40

Eww, crisps...

I have very upsetting misophonia, but mainly centred around chewing sounds.

Crisps are fine because they're crunchy, which, to me, "hides" the chewing! I still get really itchy when I see other people eating them because the idea of eating something greasy and dusty with your hands (I'm fine getting my hands dirty with other food!!!) combined with the sheepish way adults seem to gingerly reach into the packet with their fingertips... I dunno, it just annoys the heck out of me for reasons I can't explain.

ThePotatoCroquette · 10/10/2021 09:42

I think I might have this. Sometimes it's so bad I have to leave the room when others are eating. I can go from totally relaxed to barely being able to suppress my rage over crisp eating especially. I try not to show it but it is so hard. There's a couple of noises my DC make that I just can't cope with at all, the worst is when they sniff up their snot instead of blowing their noses. Also slurping drinks, licking ice creams, it's like it's the loudest most overwhelming noise in the world. Ridiculous I know! I used to have a neighbour who had the TV on loud enough that I could hear it from anywhere in my flat but never loudly enough that I could tell what was on. I nearly had a breakdown, it was unbearable. I don't mind loud music or arguing or banging so much, I have much louder neighbours now. But when it was semi audible 24/7 I couldn't sleep without tablets it was that bad.

Changechangychange · 10/10/2021 09:56

Depends. DH has definite misophonia for eating, breathing etc. We’re literally not allowed to eat in the same room as him. Half-heard tinny music from next door would definitely set him off. Loud annoying music would be fine in comparison.

Pythonista · 10/10/2021 10:23

But agree it's a term that is thrown around here - like emetophobia, OCD.

It means that those of us with legitimately diagnosed conditions are lumped with the self diagnosed crowd

I have quite bad misophonia and one of the exercises suggested by my therapist was, if you hear a chewing or chomping noise, to imagine a cute puppy doing it.

Sadly, didn’t work for me. I just got angry at the imaginary puppy!

Luckily I can just work from home most of the time now and not fantasise about murder every time someone eats an apple.

MyPatronusIsACat · 10/10/2021 10:55

Already a thread running on this.

I think misphonia is a myth. (JMO.) EVERYone gets irritated by unnecessary, avoidable noise. I don't see how it's a 'condition.'

As I said, that's just MY OPINION, before anyone gets their panties in a knot!

Changechangychange · 10/10/2021 11:03

@MyPatronusIsACat I have tinnitus, which is an incessant hissing in my ear, and occasional high pitched tones. It used to drive me to self-harm, but I eventually learned to tune it out. Took a few years.

I am quite sure people with misophonia could learn to tune out the sound of eating, if they so wished. But it’s easier to blame other people - obviously with tinnitus you are on your own.
