Misophonia is…

…wanting to punch your fist through the wall when you can hear someone eating out of a crinkly packet, NOT getting angry when your neighbour is playing music next door and you can hear it. This term seems to be thoroughly misunderstood.

OP posts:

I am quite sure people with misophonia could learn to tune out the sound of eating, if they so wished. But it’s easier to blame other people

Amazing how you can be 'quite sure' about something that you've never experienced. Armchair psychologists call all bog off.

MyPatronusIsACat · 10/10/2021 11:15

@pinkyredrose

I think misphonia is a myth

Well aren't we lucky to have you here to put us all straight!

I can't figure out whether you have comprehension problems, or you can't read properly, or you couldn't be arsed to bother reading my post properly, or are you just being deliberately goady, by mis-representing my post in some half arsed attempt to be 'funny.' (You failed by the way...)

I said IN MY OPINION misophonia it's a myth, as EVERYONE gets irritated by unnecessary and avoidable noises! So IMO I don't see how it is a 'condition.'

Did you get it this time? IT IS MY OPINION!

pinkyredrose · 10/10/2021 11:16

An uninformed opinion doesn't count for much I'm afraid.

@rainbowmash

Eww, crisps...

I have very upsetting misophonia, but mainly centred around chewing sounds.

Crisps are fine because they're crunchy, which, to me, "hides" the chewing! I still get really itchy when I see other people eating them because the idea of eating something greasy and dusty with your hands (I'm fine getting my hands dirty with other food!!!) combined with the sheepish way adults seem to gingerly reach into the packet with their fingertips... I dunno, it just annoys the heck out of me for reasons I can't explain.

I 100% agree with this. The worst is people dipping their 2 fingers in to the corner of the packet, wrinkling it up and getting crisp dust all over their fingers then sucking fingers.

So disgusting.

Pythonista · 10/10/2021 11:20

So is everyone on here diagnosed?

MyCatEatsPrawnCrackers · 10/10/2021 11:21

It's like the recent Munchausen's thread. Loads of people seemed to know someone with it. Confused

LowbrowVictoriana · 10/10/2021 11:44

It means that those of us with legitimately diagnosed conditions are lumped with the self diagnosed crowd

Yes, you'll forever get "oh me too" when you disclose your condition. Hmm

So is everyone on here diagnosed?

I'd bet very good money that they're not.

Alpacinoshoohaa · 10/10/2021 11:48

Grin rainbow mash.

"the sheepish way" 😂😂.

Funny isn't it!

My dd has this, I was really offended when it first became apparent but I actually found out about it on here so we laugh about it and she's OK to simply leave when my chewing affects her.

Pythonista · 10/10/2021 11:49

I have ASD and freak out in crowds. But then people say 'oh I don't like crowds either' like it's a minor irritation

I had to wait til I was 50 to get a diagnosis and the actual DX took two years from referral. So people saying things like 'I think I'm on the spectrum' l irritates me

SueSaid · 10/10/2021 11:50

Misophonia is a load of bollocks imo. An 'illness' invented by people who don't have the common sense or the resilience to cope with other people's 'noises'.

Just use some earphones if other people's breathing is just too horrid to cope with.

pinkyredrose · 10/10/2021 11:54

I am officially diagnosed, I also have tinnitus (diagnosed).

It's fucking awful. It often stops me leaving the house or using public transport. I can be perfectly fine and then something happens and in seconds I feel faint, my heart starts pumping wildly, I get a whooshing feeling in my head, I can't walk properly, I can't talk, I get massively panicky, i get hot, I think I'm going to have a heart attack.

It's no fucking joke and to hear someone who's never suffered from it blithely pronounce that they think it's a myth really doesn't help .

Pythonista · 10/10/2021 11:55

What about people who have never been diagnosed. Does that annoy you too?

whiteroseredrose · 10/10/2021 11:58

DS has this. Started with his dad licking his fingers eating chips...

However his main trigger is me, if I sniff. Anyone else can sniff but not me! Not necessarily actually sniffing, just breathing through my nose when he can hear it.

So I end up blowing my (snot-free) nose constantly when he's home 😂

Burnerphone21 · 10/10/2021 12:00

Yabu. Actually the trigger sounds for most people with misophonia are very similar and centre around d moth noises.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 10/10/2021 12:19

Misophonia is not a myth and that’s quite an offensive statement!

DD 19 has severe Misophonia and Misokinesia fully diagnosed and it’s destroyed her life, I have mild Misophonia and DS 17 has moderate Misophonia all diagnosed

DD is so badly affected she hasn’t been able to be in a school classroom since she was 12 when the distress reached suicidal levels

As a research project at Newcastle university recently identified the area of the brain that is hyper stimulated in this condition you are just showing your ignorance refuting belief of the condition

It is well recognised that it triggers the fight flight mechanism when a trigger is heard or seen

To true fellow sufferers I salute you, to the ignorant doubters, would you say that to someone with asthma? Ms? Parkinson’s? all conditions people once didn’t believe existed

MyPatronusIsACat · 10/10/2021 12:32

I didn't say it did. Confused You don't pay attention very well do you?

Or are you just being deliberately goady?

I know which one of the two MY money is on. Wink

Oh please stop with the patronising comments.

martingrowler · 10/10/2021 12:48

You can't just say any old uneducated bollocks you want to and then put ITS MY OPINION as though that makes it okay. It's a scientifically proven condition. It's not up for debate or opinion.

Anniegetyourgun · 10/10/2021 12:52

What's the saying, something like "you are entitled to your own opinion, but you are not entitled to your own facts"?
