What is happening to the uk? No food on the shelves, the cost of living has become extortionate coupled with stagnating wages it seems this is a country where unless your in the higher income bracket you really can't afford to live anymore.
Poverty is going to be rife I dread to think the amount of people who will be choosing between food or heating this year.
Aibu to think this country has gone to shit of the likes we have not seen for a long time.
I am lower income and feel like I can't afford to live anymore.

BunsyGirl - www.chartoasis.com/gbp-usd-forex-chart-10-years-cop0/ - pound fell against USD in 2016 and hasn't really recovered. Agree if you're comparing to 2 years ago it's not so much of a factor if you're looking at USD.

SecretKeeper1 · 09/10/2021 21:50

Didn’t really notice the petrol crisis here (WYorks), the one time I really needed some I just went and got it, no queues. Yeah I saw the Fb posts asking which places had petrol, but I think everywhere locally was fine once the panic buyers had full tanks.

Also no food shortages whatsoever. Have noticed fewer shop discounts, but can’t blame manufacturers and retailers for trying to recoup losses of the last 18 months.

Sorry to hear sone of you are suffering, but be assured (or terrified!) that other countries are facing the same issues with politics and societal anxiety.

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 09/10/2021 21:50

@jgw1 why would it be worse under Corbyn? Delusional much!

Jetstream · 09/10/2021 21:54

We are slightly concerned about Northern Ireland. They are part of the single market and doing as well. The DUP want the same problems the rest of the UK are having.

Theendoftheworldisnigh · 09/10/2021 21:54

GP issues are largely dependent on individual surgeries. Our GPs have been seeing patients, when needed, throughout the pandemic.

Plumedenom · 09/10/2021 21:54

And I say that as someone who once worked in fast moving consumer goods supply chain with supermarkets. The project even ten years ago was 24 hours from order with supplier at far off DC in Scotland to local supermarket DC in London. Governments never ever ever heed the advice of supply chain experts, really never. Which is ironic as these supply chain guys are shit hot in a crisis and always live close to the wire. They are not cautious by nature, so when they tell you you have a problem, it would be an idea to listen. They predicted the food situation post Brexit a mile off.

Kendodd · 09/10/2021 21:55

DH (French) has just told me that EDF are thinking of cutting electricity supplies to Jersey and the UK if the Boris keeps playing silly buggers

Thing is, brexiteers would love that. Seeing plucky Boris standing up to the nasty foreigners. Can you imagine the Daily Mail and Express headlines. Honestly, I think some Leave voters won't be happy until we're actually at war and politicians know there's nothing like a war to get people on side.

Roussette · 09/10/2021 21:56

Great post @Plumedenom

This shitshow of a government don't listen

It's always been a knee jerk reaction, even through covid.

jgw1 · 09/10/2021 21:56
@jgw1 why would it be worse under Corbyn? Delusional much!
Well, he isn't so well connected so doesn't have so many mates to pay large amounts of money to, to mess up all kinds of vital services.

Roussette · 09/10/2021 21:56

Seeing plucky Boris standing up to the nasty foreigners

He'll send in the navy boats!

Plumedenom · 09/10/2021 21:57

Oh well. Could be worse. We could be in Lebanon tonight with no electricity and no grid at all. Example of how bad government can get if you let it.

Cazzovuoi · 09/10/2021 21:57

I love how covid is being blamed. We had covid where I live. We have zero problems. The 5 other European countries surrounding us also have zero problems.

It’s Brexit!

chugga · 09/10/2021 21:57

The UK has gone to shit. This country is an absolute joke, we always used to laugh at America when Trump got into office with how much of a buffoon he is but look at us now with Boris like he's any better. It's a mix of Brexit, COVID and our PM that's got us here. I come from the South West too @Ilovegreentomatoes and I come from an area that has a large Tory following, I didn't vote for Tories because all they care about is money. Brexit was to help the NHS but they are wanting to privatise it, Brexit was for us to save money but now we're in a whole load of debt. Tax, food, energy, etc. are all going to go up but all the people who don't earn enough or who are already on the breadline are going to be the one's who suffer because the UK doesn't have any money to help anyone anymore. When winter comes there is going to be a lot of people that will have to choose between food or staying warm.
We are seeing shortages but that's because we kicked out people from other countries that were able to drive HGV lorries but what's the solution now that they are all gone? I don't want my son to be growing up in Britain how it is right now because the future is very scary. I'd like to think that when the next election comes up people will think twice before voting Tory again because they've ruined Britain but when the time comes all that has happened the past 2 years will have been forgotten about.

Wazzzzzzzup · 09/10/2021 21:57

Do you think we will get "Do they know is Christmas" style song as well?

Fordian · 09/10/2021 21:57

@BunsyGirl

I find the no food on the shelves posts offensive. There’s plenty of food in this country. Maybe people can’t buy the exact brand that they want, but they can buy something. I actually prefer shops like Aldi that don’t have 20,000 types of the same thing.

My mum (RIP, b. 1933) was like you.

Overwhelmed by choice in a supermarket. She wanted to be given one option only.

Personally, I like choice, but I understand it's not for everyone.

Keeping2ChevronsApart · 09/10/2021 21:57

@Suzi888

You live within your means *@BoredZelda*. If you overspend then that results in you being poor/running out of cash. No matter how much money you have to start with.
My friend is constantly lending money to her son for food or fuel. Him and his wife are on minimum wage salaries but have a sky and broadband package of over £100 a month, top spec phones and planning on spending over 1k on their 3 children this Christmas. Why don't people on here believe that there are so many families like this?
User135644 · 09/10/2021 21:58

We get what we vote for.

The English love affair with the Tories (particularly Boomer generation and above) leaves us all having to deal with the reality that comes with long term Tory rule.

Why should they help though? The people who voted for Brexit got what they wanted with us being out of the EU and this is the consequences of that.

WorraLiberty · 09/10/2021 21:59

@Ilovegreentomatoes

Not scaremongering just generally worried.
Falsely claiming there's no food on the shelves in the Southeast is very much scaremongering.
Lightisnotwhite · 09/10/2021 21:59

@Burtknowsbest

2 years ago living in the south east as a single parent, in social housing and on a salary of 28k I still had very little disposable income after my rent and bills were paid. I dreaded anything breaking down that would need a few hundred to sort out and it that would take me a couple of months to catch up.

Roll on a couple of years, chronic health issues out of the blue that have left me too unwell to work and currently surviving on 985 a month UC, £700 a month social housing rent and the rest left for bills and food… it’s always been like this for those of us that live close to the edge and have no safety net but now it’s just dire… needless to say that I have never voted Tory

I’m in a similar position to your first scenario. It bonkers that it’s only just enough to live on. That was before Brexit and Covid.

However many many people down here are on amazing money. Not all Tory voters either. It’s the rich poor divide that’s doing for us.

Wazzzzzzzup · 09/10/2021 22:00

@chugga apparently that's the right thing to do even if the problem is self inflicted

chugga · 09/10/2021 22:01

@Keeping2ChevronsApart If she's aware of this then she needs to stop giving them money then, she's only enabling them because they know that they can run to her and she'll give them money if they need it. What they are spending her their money isn't a priority, they don't need a big sky package and to spend 1K on Christmas presents for their kids if they can't afford it.

HelloDaisy · 09/10/2021 22:01

@FreeBritnee

I was listening to the news today talking about power shortages globally. To be honest I wish it was just Brexit as that at least feels temporary. Global fuel shortages sound like Armageddon to me. I’m honestly frightened.
That’s how it seems to me too. I feel frightened for the future..
willithappen · 09/10/2021 22:02

I'm 29 years old and I feel I have been quite oblivious to things in the country before or maybe too young to have noticed but the last few weeks I have been seriously understanding how messed things are and it worries me so much
